"Heavy but full of features!"
Pros: Convenient printing options, Nice Color output, Silent, Sturdy, Nice Design, Great Price, Easy to Install and Use
Cons: Very Heavy, Networking Optional, Expensive Toner
Summary: I was considering two other printers before I bought this one. I was considering the Konica-Minolta 2450 and an OKI Color laserjet.
First of all, I didn't buy this printer to print my photographs. I bought this printer to replace my old and beat-up HP 1100 Laserjet. I bought this printer from BB for $364.99 and also got a $100.00 Mail in Rebate. At $264.99, buying a color laserjet made more sense then buying a monochromatic lasterjet printer.
The printer was very simple to install in Windows XP. All I did was plug in my own USB 2.0 cable and that was all. XP recognized the printer right away. No need to download any drivers or install anything additional. I didn't even open the software that came with it.
It really does take 9 seconds to print the first black and white page. It also really does take about 12 seconds to print the first color page. I used my wath to time it from when I hit print to when the print was available.
It also took the same amount of time to print an 8x10 color photograph. The quality was certainly not that like what you would get from the photo shop but then again, I used a normal laserjet sheet of paper. I'll test it later using photo qualitity paper.
The paper tray is easy to access. It takes 250 pages or so. There is also a Multi-Format Paper tray on the side that takes about 100 pages. You can load that one up with just about any kind of paper out there.
Here are some of the reasons for which I picked this printer over the Oki and the Minolta models:
1. Envelope printing in the Minolta requires for you to empty the paper tray, adjust the size of the tray, insert the envelope(s), close the tray, open the main lid, pull on two tabs, close the lid, then print. After all that, you have reverse the whole process to return to normal printing. OUCH! With the Samnsung printer, all you have to do is open the Media Tray on the side (like almost any other LJ printer out there), adjust the slider to your envelope's size, and print. That's it. Again, even though this is a color laserjet, I bought it to print a lot more then just photos. I have a Canon 200CP and 960 printers for that. Which are also Pictbridge capable by-the-way.
2. The Toner output on this printer seems to be twice that of the competition.
3. The sound. It is quieter then the Minolta.
4. The price, it was about $200.00 cheaper then the Oki model and a bit less then the Minolta.
I don't mean to rag on the Minolta printer. I almost bought it instead of the Samsung, but in the end, the toner output, printing options, and less noise made me choose the Samsung.
That's my 2 cents. I feel sorry for the Linux guy that gave this printer a 3. Fortunately for me I use Windows XP and 2000 and this printer works just fine and delivers what I paid for. I have a feeling I'm going to be enjoying this printer for many years. Now, if only I could find those darned optional Networking parts...Updated
I meant to say WATCH, not wath. My typo...

I agree with you Apeguero. Like all of the Samsung products I've owned during the last 10 years the CLP 510 is an outstanding piece of machinery. Work like a charm every time, the colours are vivid and I have no problem with blurred or fuzzy print, as some have said. I find the toner a bit expensive but it's cheap if you look at the old LaserWriter Select 310 toner cartridges at $100+ for Black only. I've just had the unit a couple of weeks but I've already printed more than 680 full 8 x 10 inch colour prints from the original toner and there';s no sign of running out yet. Every print is perfect. Considering the 510 was made for Windows I'm doing well because it has proven fully compatible with my G4 operating OSX 4x. Hooks up great with iphoto and with Epson scanners.
I love the CLP. Comments offered via CNet reviews helped me to choose this particular model. Thanks all!! -
