"Do not buy this printer unless you actually see the printed samples and decide that their mediocre q" on by asulakve
Pros: Low priced; fast; includes built-in duplex unit
Cons: Terrible print quality
Summary: This printer was rated “very good” by CNET editors in 2004. Indeed, the printer has a short worm-up period (rocket speed compared to my other color laser printer, Minolta Magicolor 2300DL), it is quit in the standby mode (which I can not say about the above-mentioned Minolta), and is reasonably nice-looking. Also, the printing speed is very fast, and the printer has duplex printing capability as a standard feature (an extra option on many other printers, often costing $250 or more). All this, combined with the low price (about $350), makes this printer potentially very attractive to home offices or small workgroups. However, the printer fails miserably in its main function – in printing quality. Many reviews commented on the mediocre printing quality of Samsung CLP-510, but I thought how bad could it be? So I went ahead and bought it - to discover first-hand that the printing quality is undeniably very poor. The text is grainy even in the BEST setting (1200 dpi), it seems out of focus, and is fuzzy (am I being redundant here?!). In short, it has one of the worst, if not the worst, printing qualities I have ever seen in any printer, laser or ink-jet. Sure, it is inexpensive and has duplex printing capability…. It does print in color, and it is better priced than many other laser printers, especially when you consider the standard duplexing unit on the Samsung... It has been rated “very good” by CNET…. If you are still considering buying this printer, I strongly suggest you look at the actual printouts first. Go to the store and print some test pages. The quality may be acceptable to what your specific needs are. If so, than this is a great buy. However, chances are that once you look at the printouts, you will start looking for another printer real fast.

"Toner has chip based on page count" on by phishcranium
Pros: No pro's in my opinion.
Cons: Read My opinion
Summary: I bought this because of the built in duplexer. Any paper I use with the duplexer makes the toner flake off. Also, the toner cartridge has a chip that counts the number of pages. Once the count is up you have to replace with expensive/new cartridges even though you have plenty of toner. Think you can refill your cartridges? Think again!

"Great value, good features" on by rgritter
Pros: Out-of-box duplexing, low cost, network included, wireless networking available (additional cost)
Cons: Toner cart: 1/2 full on new printer and new set cost is over $450 - but that is for over 7000 sheetes, accdg to Samsung
Summary: I was surprised that the printer did not include "full" toner cartriges. The first replacement set was needed after 3 months of use, and we expect to have to replace then about every 7-9 months with new toner units. Color toner run $115-120 (each color) and the black toner is less ($75-85). On the PRO side, my local toner refill company already stocks Samsung refilled cartriges (toner from the manufacturer and they are also certified to rebuild the toner cartriges). <<ASK your toner refill company to get the supplies... they are readily available!!>>
The quality for the printer is good, and the color neede a bit of tweaking for correct rendition, but all in all- this printer is a LOT, LOT cheaper than an ink-jet, with good quality.
A great choice for any office that distributes color flyers and material - the auto-duplex feature and optional 2nd paper tray make this a great deal for most companies.
To improve this printer, Samsung need to get the color match a bit closer and have the toner available at a cost of under $100 per cartrige for the color units. I can get the color carts. refilled for less than $60 each locally (in the Kansas City metro area).
Overall, a fine printer with a lot of features. -
"Samsung CPL-510 a winner!" on by dougsx1
Pros: Low cost, Duplex, handles heavy paper, good output
Cons: Heavy, price per page not the lowest
Summary: I just purchased this printer from Best Buy in the US for $299 (after $100 rebate). It works very well for my needs; prints on heavy card stock paper, duplexes and has good enough quality for my projects. I needed to produce engineering type documents and software training manuals where the graphics consist of screen shots and web page graphics. I highly recommend this printer for people with similar needs.

"Disappointed" on by symboliser
Pros: quiet when not in use
Cons: quality, speed - poor, poor value
Summary: I wish I had been here before all the trouble I went through to get one of these.
The CLP-550N was at such a competitive price I hunted for it with 3 of my suppliers - and 7 weeks later there were still no confirmed stock of the printer. I eventually opted for the CLP-510, but I imagine the 510, 510N, 550 and 550N are all the same printer but with NICs and more memory. Toms Hardware had this rated very well and I read some other reviews that gave this printer a good rating. We have a Xerox Phaser 7300 and Epson Aculaser - and the Epson is an old, dying printer - and both give results worthy of a colour laser printer.
This Samsung printer is so bad, I have tried to get my supplier to take it off me and sent a written letter to Samsung (because they don't handle complaints over the telephone, apparently). I've had no response yet but we are after getting our money back for this - it's not even worth a dollar to me - not with the cost of the cartridges to replace! We might as well have purchased a top of the range inkjet and still had better results than this!
To clarify, the ink DOES drop on the paper (does not guarantee your prints will be CLEAN), the text quality is poor (SHODDY) - far from what I expect from a colour printer, the contrast is poor, the default brightness isn't right - the colours aren't sharp and give the look of "bleeding" - but there isn't any - it's just the way the printer drops the ink on the page. You really get better results from inkjets these days and I can't believe this printer is out for sale on the market. Even the printing speed isn't impressive!
The main reason I avoided HP (comparable printer cost) was because of the cost of replacement parts. Kyocera have been fantastic printers for black and white prints. What can I say ... if we can get rid of this we will go for an HP or another Epson Aculaser. Very, very disappointed, Samsung - and disappointed with all the magazines and web-sites that rated this printer so highly!
