"Great all-around printer, economical, love the duplexing" on by jsneeringer

Pros: Low per-page cost for B&W, two-sided printing, comes with full toners

Cons: Slow to produce the first page, heavy

Summary: This is a great printer. I love the two-sided printing, because it reduces that amount of paper I have to deal with. Some people comment about the fact that pages come out of the printer and are then pulled back in for printing on the other side, but I am used to that. It does seem a little funny that it does this when you print a single page, but that may be necessary to keep you from printing on the wrong size when you manually insert stationary.

I do mostly B&W printing, so per-page cost is very important to me. According to my calculations, this is one of the least expensive B&W printers around. For color, it’s much less expensive than an ink-jet, and you don’t have to worry about the ink cartridges drying out like you do with ink jet printers. Furthermore, it comes with full toner cartridges, and the printer often sells for very little more (or maybe even less) than the value of the supplies that come with it. (That’s why you see new ones for sale on eBay without the toner cartridges.) The absolute cost of a complete set of four toner cartridges (around $400) may seem high, but the per-page cost is not.

It does take a long time to warm up and spit out that first page. To me, this is the biggest drawback. I also hear complaints about the quality of the color printouts, but my untrained eye can’t see any problems. If you are concerned about this, go to CompUSA and see a sample printout. Another minor problem is that I keep opening the wrong door when I’m trying to insert an envelope, because two are right next to each other.

It does take a lot of space, and it’s heavy. You really should have two people to move it very far, and don’t lift it if you have back problems.

Setup does involve quite a few steps, and I failed to remove the paper from the drum, producing horrible first results. Fortunately, tech support quickly set me straight, and there was no trouble getting to talk to them. Also, it smelled a little strange at first, but that seems to have gone away.

Like all things technical, this printer has a few quirks, and I’ve tried to mention them all. Nevertheless, it’s the best printer I’ve ever had for the money. The initial cost is slightly higher than some, but full toner cartridges more than make up for this, resulting in an all-around great value for most homes or small offices.

"Power and sound issues" on by tuxedomask419

Pros: Good clean picture, easy hookups

Cons: A year and month after purchce there is a loud humming noise and now it cycles power and wont turn on. Warranty expired of course

Summary: At first it was a great product, but the true test is when things are no longer "new" will they still function at 100%. Its a big fat no for me on this. I will be back to update the repair cost that comes out of my pocket to keep you all informed.

    "Disappointing" on by Henri12

Pros: Price, networked, and with duplexing capability.

Cons: slow, driver problems affecting color rendition, and waste toner tank error messages.

Summary: Slow to start, and a heavy printer at 70lbs. Problematic is the frequent error message that the waste toner tank needs to be replaced or cleaned. Or that the "Imaging Unit is Invalid". A replacement tank is not cheap, and cleaning it works most of the time but it is a great nuisance. Have problems with the colors which seemed to be eliminted by a power cycle. All in all, you never know if you can rely on the printer to print in good color, and without any error messages.

"Best Value Colour Laser Printer" on by jablott

Pros: Duplex, full original toner 5000 pages colour, 7000 pages B/W

    Cons: Hard to find any

Summary: Of the ""cheap"" Colour Laser Printers, this is the only duplex, networked printer that comes with full toners, and works with Windows, Linux and MAC. These toners also have the highest yield (eg. HP 2000 pages, only Epson comes close with 4000 pages, but is not Duplex). So when factored in there are cheaper printers around but you will soon have to fork out $5-600.00 on toner, and then they have a much smaller yield than the Samsung. I can't think of a reason buy any other colour laser printer!! As the Editor said the toner is a little more expensive but it gives nearly 3 times as many pages as the competition, most of which come with introductry toners of only 1000 pages. No-one, I would think, would buy a laser printer to print photographs?

"Solid and /quiet/ entry-level color laser." on

Pros: - Superb technical and industrial design - PS3 and PCL6 (emulated) enable championship flexibility; mine prints flawlessly from CUPS under lots (>13) of OS variants - Surprisingly quiet - 2-line LCD enables simple management - Samsung provides (proprie

Cons: - Duplexing requires proprietary Samsung drivers - If you don't refill, new colour cartridges are pricey (although monochrome is about par on cost) - Under MS Windows, it's a bit slow (although my *nix performance has been excellent, to include Mac OS X)
