"It's worth more than you paid for it!" on by Robert Luft

Pros: Fast printing, small footprint, inexpensive initial cost

Cons: A bit noisy, higher lifetime cost, text printing may be "inexact"

    Summary: First things first...the bad:

The starter toner that comes with it is a little skimpy (1000 pages as opposed to the 4000 you can buy), and the lack of a supplied USB cable may be a pain for some people that don't have an extra one (and there is no parallel port connection). The toner saver feature claims 40% reduction but I would say it's close to 25-30% from my experience. Also, the duty cycle before certain maintainence is needed is shorter than many printers and this cost can be considerable (I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting a new one instead of doing the maintainence) Also, I have noticed that some fonts print in grey as opposed to black. Generally these are fonts I added (not pre-installed), or certain fancy ones that are thin - like script fonts. Also, the printer is noisy in compairson to many other laser (and ink for that matter) printers on the market. Finally, paper capacity is just plain poor.

    And now for the good:

If you catch a sale on this printer, a mere $80 for a laser printer is a great buy. The cost per page is exceptional compared to the ink route, not to mention the toner saver feature actually does help extend some extra life if you're willing to trade that pitch black print for one a little lighter. If your like me, having the printer on your desk is no problem since the printer has a small footprint. Which is good as the printer is exceptionally fast so you don't have to wait...and wait. Last but not least, the easy installation allows for anyyone to be able to set everything up and get printing in no time.

**This printer should be used for general, personal use. Many people complain about the functionality for what I consider to be more business-oriented uses. Given the price of the unit and it's ability to complete most basic needs, it would be inane for a person to pass on this laser printer if they are a first-time buyer or only do light printing (<50 pages/week). Just my two cents**

"Can't get any better for the price!!!" on by cchan_junk

    Pros: Price, speed, small footprint

Cons: Loud, gets hot, occasionally misfeeds

Summary: How can you beat this printer for $50?! I've had mine for about 2 weeks, and I love it! It does exactly what I need it to do, which is print basic B&W documents.

It is louder than my old laser printer (which was a little startling at first). Also, if you print too many pages at once (25+), it may get a little hot and/or feed multiple sheets of paper.

    Overall, a great printer!

"Best B&W laser printer for the price!" on by geenosr

Pros: Price, ease of operation, speed

Cons: noisy, USB 1.1, and toner price

Summary: Great printer, graphics are mediocre, text and fonts are clear and crisp. I bought this printer from NewEGG, and with a $50.00 rebate, this was a no brainer deal! I added a Zonet print server, and everyone in my house (6 computers) have access to this laser printer. Toner is expensive, but this seems to be standard with entry level laser printers.

"terrible printer... if you plan to print more than around 5 pages at a time it consistently jams." on by rhanig

Pros: it prints around five pages at a time well...

Cons: If you try to print more than around five pages at a time, it consistently jams...

"Best mono laser printer in this price range" on by A. Hubert

Pros: Very fast, excellent print quality (text), small desk space needed, toner save feature

Cons: Graphics quality medium (even at 1200 ppm), USB cable not supplied, power hungry when starting-up (see opinion)

Summary: Bought this printer a week ago for $110 cdn + $20 cdn for USB cable.
But for under $150 cdn, I am more than pleased with it. It is fast! Only about 3 seconds per page and it was very easy to set-up, and print quality is far more supperior than inkjet.

Note: the first time I powered the printer, it tripped my power-bar's safety braker. So be aware that the unit requires plenty of juice to power-up! In the documentation they mention that it consumes about 400 watts when printing. But I suspect that the initial surge is greater than that. You'll see the lights flicker in the room when using it. On the plus side; there is a sleep mode features that you can adjust that powers-down the printer after a set time lapse.

I switched from inkjet printer to laser because I print only occasionally and the ink was drying-up and rendered the inkjet printer useless between uses. And the price of ink cartridges was so high ($40 for only a 400 pages life!)

Speaking of ink, the toner cartridge for this model is about $95 cdn for an estimated 3000 pages life (but at 5% fill).
Which is about the price range of many other models, too. The "toner save" feature is a good idea to save about 40% toner, and it has a very subtle effect on printing quality, just a tad lighter.

Overall great little laser printer for occasional use. Ideal for students with its small size, and price. Couldn't ask for more at this price...well maybe the USB cable could have been included.
