"Excellent Value and Image Quality for a home or office pc or mac"

by RodsterinFL on October 23, 2006

Pros: Digital and analog input with HD widescreen view

Cons: Has basic stand and calibration is required

Summary: I bought this monitor while in a local store's special 4 hour sale for $160. It was hard to pass up. I already owned a Samsung 173P - what I consider to be an excellent monitor so my comparison relates to that monitor. I viewed the Gateway in the store noting the vibrant coloration and the widescreen. It was admirable in comparison to other monitors in the store. I remember the one Viewsonic was the only one that "viewed" better. My monitor had to be ordered and when I got it I hooked it up to my mac mini G4 1.42GHz. I powered up the monitor and was horrified at the martian looking face. My ladybug desktop had a purple ladybug! The colors were WAY off. I calibrated it 3 times with some improvement then I learned of the ATi 9200 glitch that was fixed on the PC side and not on the mac affecting some monitors, etc. At any rate, I also have a PC with an nVidia card and a Macbook so I tried them. The quality on the PC was great in VGA and DVI the macbook was good too but I was unable to get the 1440x900 resolution until after I restarted. I called a friend to come over with his Powerbook G4 to see the monitor and get his opinion. He hooked it up to his laptop and the picture was beautiful. He was impressed. This monitor is not as decked out as the 21" Gateway with all the video inputs and USB height adjustable stand but it also doesn't cost $460 either. Actually for $300 less I am only lacking height adjustment and 2" of viewable area. The $60 stand adds the height adjustment and the USB ports. I noted that all the press is for the Gateway 2185 but for the person sho just wants a nice monitor and doesn't plan to hook a bunch of stuff into it, this one will do nicely.
