Pros: Bright Screen, Good Price, 4:3 aspect ratio

    Cons: Vertical Viewing Angle Problems

Summary: If someone on here claims to be a web designer and says this is a great monitor for those who deal in graphics, they are lying about the monitor or lying about themselves.

This monitor has a serious vertical viewing problem that is noticeable on ALL units! The top is always darker than the bottom and it can not be fixed!

Of course, the casual user may not notice this or may not care. If you just want to make use of the 5ms response time to play games or surf the net and want to save some money, this may not be a bad choice.

To a graphic designer like myself though, the viewing angle problem is VERY noticeable. Get the monitor only if such things don't bother you. If you're meticulous about a consistant display or work in graphics, you will return this thing within the week. Guaranteed.

I have to agree. This is a very nice monitor, although the stock setting from the factory is very difficult (for me) to look at, far too contrasty.

After spending a fair amount of time figuring out how to calibrate as well as I could, I'm down to a monitor which looks nice but which I suspect won't ever satisfy me for color work.

I'm moving off of a rather dark CRT, a 19" Nec Multisync that I've been using for a few years. And I have not taken the Multisynch out of my office yet, despite how much floorspace it occupies. For all its faults, its overall image quality was manageable and there wasn't a systematic error on the screen.

the dark top and brighter base of this Samsung has me seriously considering going through the hassle of taking it back. I'm deciding now if I'm ready to spend the kind of money I would need to spend to get an LCD that comes from an outfit which designs equipment to be used in color work, and which will easily take a unit back for uneven color, no questions asked. Problem is, those displays cost ~3x what this one does.

And it is a handsome display in many ways - very sharp, very fast, I like the base and the adjustable height a great deal.

I'm also considering getting a Color Spyder 2 calibration unit - something I never needed with the Sony or NEC tubes I've used before, but which LCDs (and not just Samsungs, by any means) would seem to profit from greatly.

For 'hand calibrating,' the material here is very valuable:

http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/monitor_calibration.htm

One thing this monitor has going for it over many of the monitors I've seen at retail is that it has at least the possibility of being calibrated properly. It has the control set to support a real calibration.

And that's why the uneven brightness is so frustrating.

Oh, and I'm not a color geek. I do a little digital photography and a little printing to an old HP 970; I just need the monitor and the printer to pretty much agree and not to spend to much time reaching consensus.

My day job is network administration, so this monitor spends a lot of time with a bunch of command windows open on it!

I'm a Webmaster, this is an awesome monitor for those who deal in graphics and, no, I'm not a liar.

I first bought this monitor for myself and then another one for the Graphics Designer at the company I work for (I also do purchasing for the IT department). I love this monitor and the graphics guy does, too.

What's not to like? 1600x1200, 5ms refresh and 16.7m colours!! Sign me up.

Are there cons? Sure there are. Some light bleed in dark scenes, vertical viewing isn't stellar and it does take getting used to the high resolution (surfing the net, e-mail). It was also quite expensive, but I snagged this peach as a demo for $330 CDN ($300 US). Prices on larger screens are coming down fast, so look for this baby if you can find one. Text and graphics are CRISP. No ghosting in games, either. And I'm talking Battlefield 2142, Half-Life 2, etc. Once you get used to a 20 inch screen, you'll never go back to 17 or 19.
