"NOISY (meaning sound, not pic), but vivid"
Pros: Bright, vivid, affordable, adjustable
Cons: Irritating noise, intermittent dropping of signal, too-bright LED power button
Summary: I bought this monitor over a year ago, when I bought it for editing a low-budget film (FCP, Powerbook G4 1.67GHz, Firewire drives). I used it for the film for a couple of weeks before I took a paying job at a studio, and since then I've used it infrequently. I do love having a large monitor to attach to my 15" laptop, as it gives me so much real estate for writing, doing financial work, internet research, Photoshop layouts, etc.
However, I have a recurring problem in which the monitor will go black for a moment every once in a while (maybe 4-5 times in a 2-3 hour work session), and I don't know why. I haven't made much effort to investigate it, to see if it's a problem of compatibility with my video card or what. I've just lived with it. What got me finally to find this site and write a review was the NOISE that the thing emits. I was writing today and eventually I became terribly aware of the high-pitched WHINE in the room coming from the ViewSonic monitor. I've noticed this before, and I remember reading about it in one or two reviews before I bought it. I think it may have gotten worse, or my neighborhood has gotten quieter (unlikely). Right now I want the extra space and the larger image for writing, but I can't stand the noise, so I'm keeping it switched off.
I'm not sure if this is a general ViewSonic LCD problem, or just with this model, but If you are noise-sensitive, I advise against buying this monitor.
