"There's a Blast from the Past!"
Pros: Very cool concept, Fun idea
Cons: Spotty control, merciless scorekeeping
Summary: In browsing for a headphones review, I ran across this. Wow! I remember bringing this to my best friend's house in 3rd grade to play!
So many aspects of the game made me happy: the whole premise, the amazing range of shapes the blob could take (and yes, the game's puzzles could get tough--that's where a subscription to Nintendo Power came in handy), the clever, or just plain whimsical associations between the jellybeans and their functions (say it with me: Licorice Ladder, Strawberry Bridge, Tangerine Trampoline, Ketchup Catch-up...) I even liked the bowlegged way the boy climbed ladders and the sound effects of the blob coming out of the transformations.
Sadly, I don't think I ever beat it, but I did find a ROM for it somewhere and loaded it into Nesticle during my college years. I got further than ever before. *grin*
I expect that with the ability to download classic NES games for play on the Nintendo Revolution (aka the Wii), interest will perk up for legacy game reviews.
It was usually pretty tough to control the blob (and sometimes the boy). This, plus the merciless one-hit-and-you're-dead scorekeeping made the game harder than it should have been.
