"Great lens at a bargain price."4.0 starson by MartinKoch
Pros: Large apperture, razor sharp, good colour
Cons: Awfull bokeh, does not look impressive on a D200
Summary: This was the first lens I bought to supplement the kitlens of my first camera (film). I bought a whole range of glass since those days, but still this lens goes in the bag everytime I take my digital SLR for a walk.
Just did a wedding-shoot the other day, and despite my zoom, wide angle and tele-lenses, half of the shots was done with my trusty 50 mm.
On film it is a standard lens, on digital a mild portraitlens, both giving a picture angle used in photography since the dawn of it.
The image is sharp, good colour and contrast, but most of all, the pictures have a 'zing' missing in most modern zoomlenses (in my pricerange at least). Especially things like fabric-detail not so much look 'sharper' but just 'better'. Though only visible when zooming in on the computer it adds to the appeal of the image in print.
The large apperture gives you excellent control over your depth of field. It happily takes expension tubes going beyond 1:1 on macro shots.
The only big drawback is the horrifying bokeh with contrasty backgrounds. Therefore only an '8'.
In short, every nikon owner with the slightest interest in doing more serious photography should buy one and start 'zooming with your feet'.
