Optical stabilizer loses effectiveness towards higher zooms
Summary Basically, this is a wonderful multipurpose lens. It can do several types of photography (macro, bird watching etc.) well.
This is a much better alternative than having two lenses to cover the zoom range and risk sand/dust reaching the image sensor while juggling the lenses too.
It is also exceptional value compared to similar products such as the Canon EF-S 18-200mm as it costs less and provides more features such as the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) and includes a lens hood.
However, I found that the lens caused some weight imbalance for my Canon 550D, which is troublesome as this lens is aimed at amateur photographers. This was fortunately an insignificant problem.
I also found the OS (optical stabilizer) to lose effectiveness towards the higher zooms. I guess at such a great zoom, no OS would be able to cope effectively.
I recommend this product to amateur photographers seeking a high quality, good value lens that covers a great zoom range and is unwilling to switch lenses regularly.
