I hate my new macby - June 18, 2003

Review:
we got new macs at work, so I had to switch from my toshiba pc onto an iBook and iMac. I was really excited to do so, because I work in publishing and had been lead to believe that macs were the **** for publishing, I have done nothing but yell and curse at my machine. I hate the fact that mac OSX does not support systems that run in OS 9 -- hence the Classic mode. ridiculous. I have to switch back and forth. whenever I try to export to adobe acrobat (OSX) from pagemaker (classic mode) it freezes. I've already rebooted three times today, and I've only been at work for three hours. I will NEVER buy myself a mac. The support is terrible as well; I called for help and they told me they couldn't help because our telephone support ran out, despite our having leased the computers for only two weeks. what's the deal? On my toshiba, in windows, I get thumbnail views of my pictures in their folders before I can choose to import them. No such luck on the mac. never, ever again.

Stable and easy to useby - November 11, 2002

The Mac OS is finally showing it's best. I've been running the OS on an older G3 with no problems. It has never let me down, and I've never had an error message nor have I encountered a hardware conflict with anything I have installed internally or as an external peripheral, including printers and scanners. It's as easy to use as the old Mac OS and now gives command line abilities to anyone who loves to tinker with the system via their keyboad. And OS X 10.2 now makes connecting to Windows systems easier than connecting two Windows machines.

I might have spelled adequete wrong? Any who I just read all of the thumbs down comments, some of them had a point and the later ones are just Windows users who have never actually used OSX. I don't really agree with any of the thumbs down reviews, OSX has never messed up for me and the people who say that it crashed probably didn't realize that it was just going really really slow. Sometimes mine goes slow but that is once in like i don't know a big number. Any who, no problems, great acheivements, and I don't know what could finish this off!

I installed this update, and was initially very happy with this. It ran good on my iMac g3 400mhz with 512 megs ram. Classic was stable, and the whole thing ran good. Then something happened. Programs would start to open, and just stall. The icon would just continue to bounce in the dock. The system quickly became unstable, and even a force quit wouldn't help. Manual restart would be needed. 1 out of 3 times upon restarting the computer would work fine. The next day after restart it would be messed up. A call to apple tech support was not helpful. All they said was 'We will put a note on your file'. Jeeze thanks apple for the help. I am attempting tonight to download the 10.1.5 update. Hopefully that will help. If anyone has any advice, please email me!!

I am happy with 10.1. Installation was a snap, upgrading from 9.22 to 10.1 took about an hour, and could not have gone smoother. Interface is clean and easy to use, though current 9.1 and earlier users might get confused as it is slightly different in some regards than what you were used to. Speech recognition is cool, but sometimes doesn't understand what you say. Runs fine on iMac g3 400mhz with 512 megs ram. Worth the upgrade

Mac has really gone stupid. What's with the switch commercials? The one about the girl who said she wrote a report on a PC and then lost half the report- gee well she probably pressed something to screw it up. And it's not like Mac's don't crash. Every computer crashes. S**t happens. There's no way to make anything in life seamless or foolproof. Really, if you ask me, why does the O/S matter for stuff like mp3 playback, digital photography & digital video? It's the program that plays the crucial role. So really, there's nothing wrong with a mac, just that PC's are more compatible and intergrate better with the internet. I just hate how Mac is advertising.

At last the MacIntosh operating system has arrived! It simply does NOT crash. It is quite beautiful. And I can run my Classic Apps without major glitches. Left unattended overnight, Filemaker crashes Classic. And the classic clock is off by three hours. But the stability of the system is better than it was even back in the halcyon System 5 days. It takes some time to adjust, but two or three days of fiddling around seems sufficient if you approach it carefully. Write down all your TCP/IP info before upgrading, write down your login password, and be prepared to update your printer drivers. But if you are careful, it's really hard to go wrong with the system X 10.1 upgrade.

As a Linux user, I am used to being able to do things through the command line that are impossible on some other systems. In OS X, it's all there. I set up a server on an older iMac using OS X that provides file services to Mac, Windows and *ix machines as well as web services AND gets used as a desktop every day by a person who isn't exactly computer literate. I run OSX and XP pro and essentially they are both excellent systems. XP pro is vastly superior to other windows versions and OSX is better than OS9. But in the end, (forget the fact that OSX is slightly clumsier to use than XP) unless you must run Final Cut Pro (and I do) there is simply no reason to go Mac. OSX is not faster and is not more stable than XP. But the clincher is the dearth of software to run in my Mac. OSX is cute, but this is the real world.

MICROSOFT SHOULD BE EMBARASSED!by - June 20, 2002

Review:
I have always been a Mac fan all my life, and Mac OS X is just plain beautiful! It runs so smoothly and just the design of the machine itself, then an outstanding looking operating system is just fantastic. I have had my new iMac Flat Panel (running OS X) since the end of March, and I cannot recall one time when my Mac has crashed. I was watching the home shopping, QVC, channel last night and they were selling a Dell, and they just talked about Windows XP and how XP has multiple users-- I just thought to myself, Apple had that way before you! I could not believe how behind XP is compared to X. And it is SUCH a shame that more people do not know about the Macintosh and it's operating system. If people would sit down for a minute and actually compare these (XP and X) they would see that Mac OS X is so much better, so much more user-friendly and overall so much better than XP! I challenge you to take TWO people who are completely computer illiterate, who have NEVER before touched a coumputer before in their life; have one person use Mac OS X and the other person use a PC running XP-- After a month, I guareentee you, I am 100% sure that the person using the Macintosh will be able to do twice as much stuff on their own and will be so much more comforable with the computer; they will feel like THEY are the ones in charge. Try that experiment, It won't let you down. Why do you think schools buy Macs? Because they are easier to learn and use!!!! Simple as that!!!!!!! Did you know that to make movies such as Spiderman and the new Star Wars movie they used only Final Cut Pro (Also made by Apple) and Macs! You as a personal consumer (you don't have to be a business or expert!) can buy Final Cut Pro (works with OS X!) and if you have a digital camcorder, you can make movies and literally use the same thing that big hollywood editors used!! Anway, buy a Mac, get Mac OS X-- You definitly will not be sorry.

Ok, so I just bought a new iBook (14.1") for my business. I have been a Mac person since 1988-ish, and therefore have seen the many faces of the Mac OS- good and bad. This one, X, rocks my world. Sure, not every single utility app and backwater pong-manifestation has made it to the X platform yet. Give it time. They will come. Until then, almost all of the productivity/creative/multimedia/business software is now running under the X platform. It's not going anywhere, kids. Case in point- I host a radio show and in about ten minutes of tinkering, I jacked my iBook in to the control console, and controlled the show from my iBook the rest of the night. $50,000 dollars worth of radio equipment made obsolete in a matter of minutes. THAT'S progress. I not only "Think Different," I move, eat, sleep, and WORK differently.

After a month or so working with os x and buying a 40 dollar book to help me with it, I am going back to OS 9. I have lost a lot of time over things like trying to get my computer to print, which it finally did after I reinstalled the drivers twice. It is slow and finding files has been challenging for me, I started just dumping them all on the desktop, to be put away later. Just figuring out how much memory you have is a big ordeal in os x. I am sure some of this is me, but I have never had any prob learning an OS before, mac or windows. There is little supported software and overall it has been very frustrating for the most part trying to get any work done using this OS.

I've had a PowerMac G4 with OS 10.1 for a few months now and life is just beautiful. More and more apps are coming out so I find myself rarely using Classic (main exception is to play music from the Web - Media Player, Real and Liquid are a bit slow to adapt); the Unix-based system seems just as reliable as it's claimed to be, and when occasionally one app hangs it's "Force-Quit" in 2 seconds and the OS and other programs are totally unaffected even during the hang. Although I don't use the Terminal, hence don't "see" the Unix-based core very much, I suspect it's no coincidence that my encounter with this really nice OS, my favorite so far (I've had Windows at home for years, and occasionally had to perform some basic tasks on Unix at work), coincides with the first time I manage to have Unix installed on my machine (I've tried before on my PC, never quite managed). And, oh yes, the GUI is really nice and pretty.

Switched to OS X when it came on a PB G4 550... as everyone says, very stable, pretty quick (although when it does get in a snit and spin the cursor icon, it seems to stay there longer than 9.2). Every app I use (except Maple) has made it to OS X (although I've yet to do all the expensive upgrading), or else a more-than-adequate substitute has come along. Ambrosia has even released a new instalment in their addictive EV series that runs well on X and takes advantage of its improved graphics quite nicely. I've managed to crash it once with MAPLE 7 running (in Classic) a very long (days) task. I'm a little disappointed with the "native PDF" support... OS X PDFs don't seem to be entirely canonical when I try to open them up in Acrobat Reader under OS 9.1: it doesn't recognize them. Also, sessions would have been nice in the CD-burning process... so much wasted space with one burn per disc! Apple web support doesn't seem to have everything X covered yet... looked and couldn't find much at all on IRDA. Nonetheless, it's fast, it's another relatively smooth changeover, iTunes is really nice, I don't envision going back!

OS X is freekin' wonderful!! I bought a book on it and it doesn't seem as difficult as I imagined it to be. After converting from Windows to Mac OS 9, I thought I was in heaven. The traditional Mac OS is truly easy and efficient. I spend more time being productive than diagnosing problems. I recently purchased an iBook to complement my iMac and was pleasantly suprised with OS X. It took some getting used to (processes and privileges etc), but after a few tweaks I learned on-line, the system zips along. Applications are streaming in. And iTunes--what a boon for music lovers! So, you're probably wondering why I rated every category a 4 and not a 5. Well, as with any new edition or model, things only get better with time (usually), so I anticipate that, if later versions of OS X are only improved upon, Windows users will be forced to convert. Why cling to a dinosaur like Windows (a dinosaur that just keeps gettiong bigger and nastier instead of evolving---obviously Apple chose the right name for their OS X core development--Darwin....). I use PCs in my computer graphics class at school (I have a 100 average) and I have one thing to say: PCs and graphics don't mix - Macintosh (OS X) and graphics mix great! I recently upgrade to OS X and I hate switching from OS X to OS 9 to run my video apps. OS X is extremly stable - multitasking is great too. I update my OS to 10.1.2 while surfing the internet and listening to music with iTunes - Try that with Windows! (iPod is great too)

I'm running OS 10.1 on my G3/350 Mac with 320Mb of Ram and it runs very nicely. It's not a speed demon but it isn't slow either. What I enjoy most is the stunningly beautiful interface, the true multitasking capabilities and the protected memory. In the month I've been running it, it hasn't crashed once!! The integration with Mac OS 9 is pure genius, but somewhat of a hassle since I have many Classic Apps still on my machine. I've encountered a lot of screen redraw problems, but nothing to get alarmed about. I have mixed feelings about the Unix underpinnings of this system, though. It's definitely a departure from the traditional Mac way of doing things, but considering the awesome power and stability that this OS offers, it's defintitely a good trade off. Finally, Mac lovers can rejoice, the Mac OS is truly a powerful and modern OS. And the best is yet to come!

stability: mac os x beats them all. mac os x is as quick. mac os x is easier to use if you stay in Aqua and don't try out Darwin or terminal. very useful to me is also native previeuw and pdf printing. Problems are drivers: print support not (yet) complete (can't choose print quality on my hp), and no scanning support. Software support is coming: I already bought M$ Office but have to wait for two pieces of soft, which are promised to be macosx-native soon. I'm curious about Win XP.: seems to have the same features (but no pdf native), is more expensive but the pc boxes are a lot cheaper.

On the MAC support boards, there are literally hundreds of people who discovered their printers don't work under OSX. The latest patch offers more drivers, but having purchased and returned two printers that were supposed to work (according to APPLE), I'm not eager to spend a day proving yet another printer doesn't print with OSX. I'm surprised this doesn't show up in CNET reviews. I have called the MAC store and asked for a printer that is guarranteed to work: they won't do it. n My premium Apple tech support after 3 1/2 hours: reformat and reinstall; this, a virgin hard drive and installation. This is called a "pushback" in the trade.

A cool product, but has the sell-out begun?by - January 15, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
OS X 10.1 is the most visually stunning operating system I've seen. Its integration of OS 9 applications - through Classic - is essential and works quite smoothly. However, I fear that the latest addition to the Apple legacy is a deliberate attempt to transform its desktop OS into "MacWindows". I don't like it. The Macintosh finder - which I once could navigate on any computer, blindfolded - has become more cluttered and less user-friendly. Folders don't open in the finder quite the way they used to. And to open a document through OS X applications is a process eerily similar to that required by Windows. Not a good thing. As I lifelong Mac user, it's tough to see some of the unique charm of the operating system fade away. But on the whole, 10.1 is still a superior product, especially since the addition of desktop background options that were lacking in OS X.

I must say that Apple has landed on something wonderful. I have found that Mac OS 10.1 is inherently stable, with a great interface. It took a little while for me to actually start using it,as I had to wait until the Mac Office X suite appeared on the scene. It is colorful, the interface is fantastic, and some nifty features involved that include itunes which automatically convert any tracks on a CD to MP3's and good security features if you have more than one user on the system...I do recommend the system for anyone who is considering buying a new computer. Dump your wndows machine, and get a Mac with OS 10.1. Intitally I felt ambivalent, but now I feel wonderful that I did...

Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Having a mere iMac at my disposal I was not optomistic about upgrading as having used PC's for years I applied the standard rule that it would slow my computer down. It was actually installing XP for a firend, and seeing a speed imporvement that made me think about OSX (and the avialbility of a disk to 'trial' the OS!) It has to said that having used PC's for years I do think that the Mac is a SLIGHTLY better machine, and OSX (10.1+) is a slightly better OS. I know nothing of the inner workings of either system, nor do I want to, but the whole ownership experience with a Mac is a little nicer. They are much nicer to have in the home (you do not often get people coming up to a Wintel beige/black box saying how nice it looks!) And returning to the point, the OS now also looks lovely, and having to back to Win 98 at work each day is a little depressing. NOTE - RAM is vital to OSX, I have now see it working on the same spec imac, one with 360MB, and one with 1GB - a massive difference - don't bother unless you have 512mb or more.

I researched xp for weeks, including all the laptops available for xp. The reviews here speak for themselves. The combination of the TiBook and OS X is the most solid platform with the highest quality out there. Is it Perfect? Nothing is. Can u find defects on OS X or the Tibook? Of course, but for me, it is the best platform out there and all the signals are that it is getting better, both from the perspective of apple improving the OS and from the third parties marketing upgraded programs for OS X.

I have a firewire DVD-rom and I have to get back on OS9 just to watch a movie. Starting classic mode takes forever and 1/2 my old programs don't work with OSX/9.2 combo. The Dock is a new feature that threw the CNET reviewer, but over time as people adjust to it, its ease of use will become apparent. The key is not to overload it with everything on your computer, but some will. I still am waiting for more Applications to upgrade, but the recommendation is to contact the software companies you use and get an update from them. Office for OS X is out and has taken advantage of the power and option that xome with X. Support is coming from other companies by the end of the year. UNIX and Macintosh are a winning comboby - November 29, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
OS 10 X is a revolution in computing, and is still only the launching platform of what is to come from apple. The UNIX core makes it unbelievably stable, and ultra-modern features such as built in dual processor capability and preemptive multitasking finally utilize the power of available hardware. Applescript and the Darwin command line interface allow almost endless customization and automation of the machine, much more than the archaic DOS shell will allow (and with a much more logical interface). As of now, there is little software available, but developers are for once very excited about programming for an Apple platform, as the UNIX core and wide open code give new life to heavy Web-serving and graphic desining applications, as well as adding reliability and compatibility to games, browsers, networking, peripherials, and anything else imaginable. However, it is important to keep in mind that OS X is just the first taste of a glorious apple banquet sure to come.

Fast, Slick, Bullet-proof stability - A great system.by - November 25, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
The quality is just what I have come to expect from Apple: installation was great. Packaging was slick, and most things worked in 10. Everything works in 10.1 - only my Umax scanner needs a Umax driver, everything else is supported directly from the OS. (Even my Logitec scroll mouse - so much for Apple's one-button mouse!) And the AQUA interface - WOW! Some of the features we old OS users have come to love just weren't there in OS X (application switcher, window shade, etc.) They,re still not there in 10.1, but I now have third party freebies doing the same things. I don't miss my control strip (much), but there will be a freebie for that soon too... And I think Apple is going to follow all the users' input and reintroduce a lot of the old features. As for the new features, well I now have a real UNIX-at-home machine, and all that that entails. (I can hardly believe all the stuff out there for UNIX>

I have had only stability problems with the Classic environment. It's hard to believe I was used to the machine freezing up once a day or so. Now it's never down. (Except when I have to reboot in OS9 to run Virtual PC to do some office-related homework - VPC test drive is too slow on OS X, but Connectix promise an OS X version soon.) I haven't needed support, so it's not easy to rate this category, but the various upgrades have come quickly and loaded easily and worked well. (10.1 is a big improvement on 10 and 9.) All-in-all, it's some system.

I waited until 10.1 came out, after reading about the experiences of others with 10.0.x. The OS still needs work, and it's getting there. Now that Office is available, I can stick with X a little more. I'm pleased with the potential for graphics apps on this platform. Painter is looking great and so is Canvas (still waiting for pressure support in C8, tho'). Don't get me wrong - I'm still going to rely on OS 9 for some time to come, but my purchases are going to be Carbon- and Cocoa-based apps from now on. Adobe - where's Photoshop?! I read a lot of the negative comments and some of the positive ones - both have legit gripes and kudos. I'm pleased with where it's going - and the built-in networking capabilities are awesome. I've already TOLD my Is department that I'm going to bring in my PB and not even bother turning on my NT box (they won't upgrade my PIII-166). My future's with OS X - it's running on my Cube - some of the time for now.

This really indicates the power of UNIX and elegance of Mac ! The performance is excellent even on my iMac G3/400MHz/640MB RAM. The protected memory ensure application hang will not cause a system hang. However, I have one comment on the language support, severall major langauge support are included in the international version, while some other (e.g. Traditional Chinese) is only included in localised version. It is a 'step backward' comparing to OS9. All langauge input/display (such is also available in Win2000) should be available as software update download.

8 out of 10?! Are you kidding? Since I began to use Mac OS X 10.1, I've never been so satisfied with an operating system in my life. Even Windows XP stole features from it. The "pretty" interface does not suck away the computer's speed, the Dock is a very useful addition, it's a very stable OS, and it supports all of the peripherals I need. Most people are worried about the speed, but personally, I don't see a difference between the speed in X and the speed in 9. Way to go, Apple!

OS X is exactly what the computer experience should be. I switched to mac after 14 years of Microsoft OS, and now that OS X is in the mix, I have never been happier. It is still a bit quirky, I cannot get my cheap scanner or printer to function yet, but I can boot in OS 9.2 to get around it. That is my only complaint. My digital camera experience has never been better, nor has the wow factor of the new OS. I have gone a full 2 months without a single system crash, and you windows users may never know that feeling. OS X is still a new OS, so look for future improvements, to the best OS ever. And to the nay-sayers regarding the dock, the quickstart menu in Windows was always horrible, the dock is great, but can get in the way, only if you don't know how to change your preferences. This is great, upgrade now, mac people! Windows users, there may be hope in XP, but you will never be able to torture linux geeks, or do things as simply, or powerfully.

Overall, I am VERY pleased with OS X! I needed a new PC, and had to choose between XP & OS X. I feel that I made the right decision! I'm currently running the OS on a new iMac 700MHz. Smooth as glass, and almost seemless. The only slow loading item is the OS9 interface from with OS X itself. So far I've seen a good deal of complaints from people about varrying aspects of OS X. But to be fair, most are from before the updates. The only "problem" that I have seen was right out of the box, I had to upgrade to 10.1, and I had to perform a firmware upgrade on the iMac itself. Not difficult at all, but I can imagine that that could be a hurdle for someone who is a first time computer user. The biggest thing that OS X needs is time. As the updates com along, everything will naturally improve. Although I can understand where for old school mac users, getting used to the new interface is the biggest burdon. Overall, I would highly reccomend OS X!

As a long time Mac user, I had my doubts about switching over to OS X. I left the Unix / Fortran world some 15 years ago and I didn't think I'd ever return. Well, being the adventurous sort, I tried it out and was pleasantly surprized with the speed and stability of the product. I was a little worried about the classic mode and older software (6+ years old), but I didn't encounter any problems. An added bonus / positive mark is the number of free software (Yes I know ... they're only cute little games, software tools, etc.) on the net. This reminded me of the early days when freeware and sharewares were supreme. Anyway, to sum up my experience ... I liked it, it was fun, new and exciting to use. As I got more into the system, the more excited I got. So, it's most likely I'll start switching over to OS X in the near future. Now the downside. The only minor thing I found is having to learn a new system ... hey I'm old and the brain doesn't work as well as it use to. However, like all Apple products, I don't think I'll need to buy any books or manuals for my new adventure.

The two things that always bugged me about the classic Mac OS was the lack of protected memory and true pre-emptive multitasking. OS X has literally changed the way I work since I longer wait for the OS to complete a task, I just move on to another one while the task grinds on in the background. In the classic Mac OS, the could produce problems (it was an issue if you held the mouse button down for too long since it blocked most programs from executing while the OS spun in a loop waiting for the mouse). Mac OS X has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it and more. I'm compiling and running UNIX and Linux utilities, keeping 10 or more apps open at once and switching between the wireless networks at my home and office without breaking a sweat. That's true power! There are some spots that still need more polish, but they'll come, Apple knows what they have to do.

Migrating from "classic" land to OSX land might be a bit of a shock if you've never used Unix (or Linux). The grammar of use is very different, even if much of the vocabulary is the same. For long time casual users of the Mac, I'd say give it a pass. But if you're a webhead, you simply must upgrade. Five minutes goofing around with 10.1 and you'll never go back. It's so freaking stable, and once you get used to the Finder, you'll love its simplicity. I must say, however, that some of the eye candy is a bit over the top, but that's a personal perference issue.

I've been running OS 10.1 nonstop without a single crash. This OS is stable, beautiful and fast even on a 500 MHz G3. My only complaint is the lack of aps - but I'm confident they will come. Unix and Mac strengths combined, but limited GUI-controlby - November 3, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
A dream come true to have Unix integrated with the Mac OS. However, Apple should let the user have control over the GUI to a greater extent (particularly window behavior, a la CDE); Apple seems to assume that less complexity means better user experience for everyone, whereas it is (at least for me) incredibly frustrating not being able to set up the work environment to fit my user behavior. Finally, the OS still needs to be tweaked for speed; this will happen over time, I guess.

I'm extremely impressed by the performance, and that's on a 500/256 MB iMac! QuickTime, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, Disc Burner, AppleWorks, Microsoft Word Beta - they all run better than their OS 9 siblings. Although the amount of commercial apps is small, the amount getting released by the end of this year is amazing. Mac OS X's multimedia, Internet, performance, and user interface stand out most.

The OS you Dream about! =)by - November 2, 2001
Pros:

Review:
Macs have always been the first, and this is no exception. This OS is built from the ground up keeping in mind the idea of how simple it is to use a Mac. I have tried Windows XP and it just does not compair. With win XP I get the impression that my comp is not my personal computer but more of a clunky, non-specific, marketing scam developed to get my info. With OS 10.1 I know whats going on and I know how to do it with the greatest of ease. I was able to walk into a network environment that I never used before and I was about to use their DSL connection, access their computers, and print my documents; all of wich was done automaticly with no stuipd IP addresses, Submask numbers, or any of the stupid settings that I would have to do with Windows (any version). OS 10.1 offers TRUE multi tasking, you can run more applications with less RAM and applications run as a seprate part therefore not interfiring with others. Also I have been running 10.1 sence it came out and I have not bombed once, and I have done everything to it including throwing away thie system folder! If I were to do something like this on a Windows comp. I would have to reinstall the OS. Also OS 10.1 keeps the idea of Quality rather then Quantity much like the Windows. By this I mean that for all the functions you can get from 10 Windows apps you can get all rolled into 1 app for Mac. Apple creats the hearware, software, and everything else, therefore it all works together seemlessly and perfectly.

Have not had a single crash yet, am running it on an old iBook, and although would not say it is as fast as 9, it is smoother. To sum up, it is beautiful, stable, and built to expand into the future. Until just a few weeks ago it had been true for several years that the Mac had, arguably, the best desktop OS available. It was arguable because it was not as stable as it could be, lacked some essential features of a modern OS like protected memory and multi-tasking, and there was the Be OS constantly nipping at its heals as an alternative. But now with the forward looking Unix-based OSX with all the stability and performance of a modern operating system, as well as the demise of Be OS as a desktop alternative, OS X.1 clearly reigns supreme in the desktop OS category. The only weakness is where Apple actually went backwards to imitate a feature (the dock) from the cheap imitation put out by Microsoft.

With its open system and rock-solid foundation, OS X has the potential to be the primary OS of the future - like in Star Trek: TNG. Apple has a much better business model, better ideas, better implementation of those ideas and a wierd cult-like following that I suspect will become the norm -- if Apple makes a few marketing/manufacturing adjustments. When mac osx 10.1 came out i thought that i was going to see a change in the system as in; as in able to use other softwares in the system. When i purchased my new ibook it came with mac 10.1 and it wasnt suprising like i thought it was going to be. Its a new system but it doesnt do anything special. I didnt like it at first but now i think is just a regular system. I wouldnt go out of my way just to buy it.

Why did so many of the great things about the Mac OS have to be dumped in X? What was so bad about the Finder in 9? Why can't we change the way Aqua looks? And why am I always running into situations where I don't have permission or privileges to do something with my own files on my own machine that I bought with my own money? Why does OS X lack so many basic utilities that Windows has had since 95? Why doesn't Apple listen to our feedback?

10.0.4 came installed on my new Quicksilver and I have to admit that I was not impressed. It seemed unfinished and unpolished. I got the 10.1 upgrade out of curiosity, and boy, the future is here. It does not "feel" quite as fast as 9.2, but nothing does. Perhaps its smooth flowing (aquified) behavior makes it seem slower by losing the hard transitions in switching and launching. But the thing is absolute eye-candy. What a beautiful interface. Drop shadows, rich colors, rounded edges, anti-aliasing, glowing buttons, flowing progress bars, you name it. I have been so impressed that I have decided not to buy any more classic software and am looking actively to switch all my computing over to X. The big thing holding me back in my quest is Photoshop, and I hope Adobe and Apple get things worked out. Other carbonized apps run beautifully and are a pleasure to work with. Every day the list of apps grows and puts another nail in OS 9's coffin. One reservation I had initially was an (unfounded) fear of the terminal. Macs have long been the platform of GUI devotees and I certainly never wanted to be confronted with some command prompt nightmare. Every time my Wintel dreck box at work presents me with DOS I involuntarily cringe, and I feared OS X may do the same. Not a hint of it. Nothing even smacks of anything un-Mac-like under the surface. Nice for both the average user and the power user alike. I give it 5 stars for quality. 4 for features until all the drivers are out and it performs as well as 9.2. 5 stars for stability (not a hiccup yet). Only 3 for support right now until more software is out like the big names; Photoshop etc (I realize this is not exactly Apple's fault, but it is stopping me from ditching the old OS completely). Check versiontracker.com's OS X section for some great shareware and drivers for your move to OS X. I have loved the Mac since my first one back in '89, and I am more enthusiastic than ever now with OS 10.1. Go get some!

If everyone had a perfect operating system we would all be using an abucus. OSX is great. The user interface is a bit childish, but hell, its easy to navigate. You can make the dock dissapear if you don't like it. You can start from OS 9 if you don't want to use OSX at the moment with one click of the mouse. The video quality is awesome. The file sharing rocks. Office X is going to put any windows product to shame and to boot, I am using a slow old G4 cube. So what is everyone else's problem. In 2 or 3 months, there will be tons of software and tons of things to do and all you people that are complaining about this OS are going to kick yourselves right in the bottom. All I have to say is, its great now and, in one more upgrade its going to be nearly perfect.

Imagine, having a working web server on your computer as soon as you open the box. You don't have to imagine it, just get OS X. If Apple can market this effectively, they can start taking back market share in big hunks. If people realize that XP (XPensive? XtraProblems?) is a not-so-cheap imitation of OS X with less features (no DVD decoding, no CD to MP3 ripping, etc.) they'll come running to the real innovators.

A slap in the face for Mac usersby - October 26, 2001
Pros:

Review:
While OS X is a powerhouse technically, it's galling to see Apple not even trying to make it very Mac-like. People who have been using the Mac OS for years can't leverage much of their knowledge and experience to the new OS. Apple doesn't seem concerned about what their users want and is intent on shoving a whole new (generally inferior) computing paradigm down their throats. While OS X 10.1 did revive some aspects of OS 9 (including the desktop!) and adds some great new GUI features, there is a lot missing. Apple still thinks that the dock is the be-all end-all interface for managing open programs, commonly used folders, etc. Unfortunately, nearly everyone I talk to thinks that, while it would be nice to have the dock as an option, it is a poor replacement for the control strip, application menu, user-configurable apple menu, windowshade and tabbed folders. Some of the basic changes in the OS are baffling--I can only attribute them to laziness. Why have command-N make a new finder window instead of a new folder, instead of the other way around? Why change file selection behavior so that you must now command-click on icons to select non-contiguous items (instead of shift-clicking)? These, and a host of other basic changes bring no benefit and only make the OS X experience a more foreign one for long-time Mac users. I still love the Mac, of course, but Apple's new arrogance is a little alarming. If only they'd tried harder, they would be seeing a lot less resistance to OS X.

OS X 10.1 is beautiful. It takes the roots Apple put down in the original version of OS X and makes them really fly. The OS looks great, performs well, is rock-solid (i've had OS X crash twice in almost five months; OS 10.1 hasn't crashed yet). The "Aqua" interface is amazing, and (as Apple says) it really does help speed up my computer use. Any Mac user should feel comfortable upgrading; 10.1 is a solid, working OS. That said, it suffers from one major flaw; a lack of OS X native applications. Office v.X isn't ready for another month, and applications like Photoshop don't even have set release dates. This problem is compounded by the often clumsy Classic module, which is a tad sluggish, and occassionally problematic (for example, OS X doesn't share its fonts with the Classic environment, nor do they see the same desktop). That said, I never use OS 9 before, and I am more than willing to put up with the vagaries of the Classic interface to run all my old programs. The benefits of OS X are clear: it is a stable, powerful OS that is ready to push Apple and the Mac platform ahead into the next decade.

I say buy/upgrade it now, or if you need the word processing/graphics apps, then wait for Word X or Photoshop.

I really don't have enough good things to say about OS X and 10.1 in particular. The interface is stunning, almost a piece of art, and the amazing thing is that it doesn't even give you a performance slowdown (in 10.1). It is the most stable operating system I've ever used, much more so than Windows 9x, 2000 or NT, and obviously OS 9. The integration of key core technologies, like quartz, openGL and the Mach kernel, give this OS strong legs to stand on. Way to go Apple!

The thing that still has my jaw stuck in the dropped-wide-open position is that I successfully ran iTunes, a DVD and a quicktime movie all at the same time and yet not a single jump or skip in sound or picture quality! You probably think I am running 10.1 on a G4 with a a kazillion megabytes of RAM--- I am not --- I am running a DV iMac from 1999 with 400mhz processor and only 256MB of RAM. This is just about a minimal specs machine and yet OSX 10.1 is just so smooth and natural feeling--- Yes I think it would pass the mom test.

Apple should have chosen BeOS instead of NeXTby - October 15, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I love Apple. I have done PC hardware support, Win 9x and NT support, and AIX (UNIX) support for the last 4 years, and since most of my good friends worked for Apple in Austin and Cupertino, I've followed and tested OS X (all levels of hardware) from the beginning. I wanted to love it so hard. In fact, I considered working for Apple just to be there when it happened. After seeing how truly pathetic the OS is as a 'modern' end-user OS (it's archaic compared to BeOS, which retooled for Intel quite quickly), particularly from the Return on Investment perspective, I'd have to say my decision to shy away from Job's 'Reality Distortion Field' has proven wise. OS X's theoretical advantages in stability, security and Open-Source development won't make it into the product in time for anyone to care enough to shell out the dough it takes to get an Apple to do the same things as a MUCH cheaper PC. Job's obsession with whiz-bang (were genie effects really more important cd burning or solid fire-wire support???) has gone too far and he's neglected what users really need. BeOS is faster, more stable, STILL does multimedia better, boots instantly, and all that on quite old hardware. With even half of the money spent on R&D for OS X, BeOS would be competing with Windows in a way OS X never will. Unfortunately Gassee couldn't sell BeOS as well as Jobs sold NeXT, and Apple wanted cheap now rather than good later. Bottom line: To meet your needs, buy a Dell desktop, IBM notebook or a Linux/AIX/Solaris server instead. If you want a cool alternative OS that does multimedia great but doesn't have much hardware or software support, get BeOS. Apple's just not cool enough anymore.

As to the 'ol Mac users...crank up OS 9.2.1 and do some work, get paid and save up for the new generation of innovations coming our way. Nobody is DEMANDING you to use it...just try it out and get used to it. Note that as far as support the rating I gave is for DRIVER support from third party companies (Iomega, Agfa, VST et al). Not for Apple's support. I like the challenge of OS X and I'll customize it to what I feel is right for me and my new iMac G3 700 SE

OS 10.1 is a great system with a great future. Ok i miss some important software but in time we will have the same software support like we have under Mac OS 9, even more, because we will also have the unix/linux world and because its open source. That means more software and more hardware support then we ever had before. And to all those so called experts that compare Unix with DOS i can only say educate yourself. Unix is far better then DOS and you dont need the terminal to use OS 10.1 if you dont want too. The terminal is an enhancement that gives you alot of possibilities if you learn how to use it. And to all that criticise Apple on their product policy, well thats the only way for Apple to survive..to force the costumers to buy new Macs. Ok it was great for us to use Macs longer then a PC but when nobody buys new hardware Apple cant survive and that why i think it ok for Apple to have a G3 as a minimum requirement for OS X. This new system is fast...its stabil...it will have more software and hardware support then ever before in the history of Macs. In my opinion there is no reason not to love this system. I will stay with Apple forever and to all those that leave Apple because of OS X....well we dont want you...GET LOST! Peace!

New, groundbreaking OS standard!by - October 12, 2001
Pros:

Review:
Apple has done it again, what Microsoft nor Intel will never do - bite the bullet and innovate. Apple did it with the conversion to RISC, which considering went smoothly. Still waiting on Intel (and boy, I wonder how smooth that will be!?). Then Apple makes the next transition, to completely "Carbonize" the OS. So that once again programmers can have the freedom that only clearly defined boundaries can offer. And now Apple re-invents the OS experience, and does so willing to step on some toes to bring computing into the 21st Century. Every innovation on Windows since it's inception, has it's roots in the R&D of Apple. Even technology that already existed gets driven forward when Apple adopts it. For example, consider USB. USB existed for some time before Apple adopted it. Suddenly a bus that languished in obscurity, now rules over all others (in it?s class). Plug-and-Play, Firewire, and on and on. I have been FORCING myself to use OS X. It is not all fun-and-games. I have compared it to my friends like listening to a new CD. Sometimes you gotta listen all the way through, over and over again to begin to appreciate it. After three months now, I won?t look back. The elegance is so refreshing, and the sucker is rock-solid.. I can?t remember a single crash. When you consider what Apple has done here for a second, you just can?t help but be amazed. This is the second time that HUGH portions of technology have run in emulation, fast and stable. First the hardware, with the conversion to PPC, and now the OS with the conversion to OS X. I try to relate to people what is so great about OS X, and while I can come up with a bunch of reasons - I find it almost like explaining how it feels to ride a motorcycle. You can give someone an idea of the experience, but you just have to get on and ride to truly appreciate it. For political and practical reasons using Unix at the core was a stroke of pure genius. Unix is practically bulletproof, but it has been sorely in need of a real interface forever. This creates the underdog - ?us against the world? atmosphere again and draws in a flood of talented, motivated and innovative folks. As Windows seems committed to keeping everyone else down, or out - Apple opens the doors wider to let more people in. Elegant, I just can?t say that word enough. Powerful. Moving forward. Trimming down, powering up and clearing out all the clutter. While Intel loads more and more ?MMXish? code into the processor, as the CPU gets bigger and hotter - the PPC chip gets smaller and cooler (in both senses of the word). The Mac OS gets leaner and cleaner, and re-positions itself on a firm foundation. While Windows gets fatter, and more unstable with each new release. You can boot OS 9.x, or OS 10.x simply by using the Startup Disk control panel. Both residing on the same disk. Try that with Windows! Macintosh will probably always be the little guy, and that?s ok. Because I don?t want the world to be Mac, I just want Mac in my world. If I were a Windows person (which I?m not, even though I own and use two PCs), I?d love Apple with all my heart. Apple is what keeps Windows moving forward, cleaning up the morass in the peripheral market and FORCING the PC hardware and software makers to keep on their toes. If you are a Mac user and haven?t tried OS X - do it as soon as you can. You?ll love it. Just give it ?a few listens all the way through? and you?ll start to see. For the Unix people, welcome! Help us out. Thanks for all your hard work. We?re on the same page now, and only good can come from it. For those of you who are PC folks but are considering coming over, now is the time. And for you PC people who won?t ever change... when you go to bed tonight, thank god that Apple is alive and kicking otherwise you?d still be sitting in front of the C prompt.

The latest releases still quit unexpectedly, or have to be forced. Just because we now have the ability to force an application to quit doesn't mean we want applications that are so unstable.

It takes windows forever to startup and shut down, OH NOW OSX is the same. What the hell? Also, applications worked right off the zip disks I have and now... I got my new dual 800mhz g4 tower just before i went to college. I got to college and just about every person that came into my dorm room and saw my computer with the clear isub and 17 inch flat screen was simply in awe. Then they would say something like macs look cool but windows is far superior. A month or so has passed and my freinds after actually using my compuer which i have been running 10.04 for the majority of the time simply decided that once they had the money enough to get a new computer it would be an apple. Just a few days ago my copy of 0s 10.1 came and my computer is better then it was before...which a i thought would never be possible. It runs a descent amount faster....granted i have the dual 800 mhz processor...the features are far more numerous and useful, for example the ability to burn data cd's right from the finder, being able to connect to my college server and be able to browse not only macs but also pc's. My buddy down the hall the other day was on the phone for hours trying to figure out why the cd burner he installed was not working because of some problems with the driver. I on the other hand was able to just plug in my firewire cdburner and burn a full 80 minute cd within 4 minutes (24 speed). after finally getting his burner to work which was also a 24 speed he burned a cd in about the same time i did but it sounded terrible the audio quality was noticeably better on the cd i'd created on my mac. Anyways i'm really please with os 10.1 it really shows how superior apple computers and their operating systems really are. In regards to the cnet review office already came out with a beta version of microsoft word for os 10.1 which so far i have been amazed by. Even without the word x version out right now my mac os 9 programs all work flawlessly through classic.

OS X didn't take long to learn, I had mastered it in only one day. I got version 10.1 two weeks ago and have not needed to reboot my computer since. You should have no problems with OS X that "Force Quit" or "Process Viewer" can't fix. You shouldn't have to reboot your Mac more than a few times a month. If you're having trouble, call Apple, they have amazing phone support! Sure, I miss some small features of OS 9 like labels and the control strip module that displayed the amount of time you were connected to the internet but all the major features are still there. This version improves the overall speed and performance of the OS and restores key features such as DVD playback. There are added features that even OS 9 didn't have like CD burning in the Finder and menu-bar items. With over 1,400 naitive applications available, I don't see a shortage of software for OS X. This number should double within the next couple of months. Anyway, all my programs run in either OS X or in OS 9. I don't use OS X (or Apple computers) because they are "pretty", I use them because they provide a user-experience that is superior to any IBM-compatible. Don't wait, the future is here and it's Mac OS X 10.1!!

My printer and Imation SuperDisk no longer function in X after upgrading to 10.1. OS-X: may be great in 2 or 3 years. But I need to get work done in the meantime. Goodbye Apple. There was one that was a graphics/graphics creations, a cd ripping/mp3 compression utility/player, a video editing program and some graphics intense games. The performance of the machine was very good but so is that of my P3/866 running Win98SE. Both of my machines perform well and neither is more impressive than the other. I really wasn't very impressed with the Mac, rather disappointed if anything. The Mac hype and short coming claims are just that. Don't get me wrong, the G4 is a fine machine but it isn't any better than the other I own thus telling me I don't need them both and will most likely will try and sell it

Doing a full install it worked perfectly... BUT firewire support is gone for my OCW 60 gig firewire drive... So what did those fools at apple change in 10.1? 10.0.4 works, 9.X works, even the test release just before 10.1 worked... A major inconvenence and apples response is pathetic blaming the firewire manufactor... for shame apple on your laziness. The extra features (dvd/imovie) i could do without i'd rather have my firewire working... The only upside to 10.1 is increased stability and opengl performance AND the inclusion of GF3 drivers. Personally they should have SHIPPED my computer with GF3 drivers otherwise whats the point of shelling 400 bucks for a video card that runs on the low end GF2 MX drivers? Pros:

Review:
I have used X since the first PB. 10.1 is truly a wonderful performing release. HOWEVER, the fact that several fundamental functions are not present or kept out of the release is inexcuseable. Namely, the file sharing functionality of 10.1 is beyond comprehension. 10.1 Server has full functionality for file sharing any directory, any volume. OS9, for god's sake, has this robust of a file sharing mechanism! And what about the latest, greatest single-user release? A single Public folder for each user. Apple's excuse is that the company wants to make X as secure an OS as possible. Hmmm, so why build a comprehensive sharing utility for X Server that allows for this level of sharing?! Someone at Apple really has some issues with stupidity. Because of the way my company works with sharing, we would have to purchase a 50+ computer license of server and load it on every computer in the shop. And people say that Microsoft are a bunch of a**holes! Come on, Steve. Give us BACK the funcationality we have come to rely on.

Up until the pre-release of XP, I was a very devoted M$ fan. I currently have 7 computers, all running either Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise, which cost me 2K new *I paid it BTW*, Win2K Professional, and Win2K Advanced Server *Which I also bought*. XP's lack of performance and new interface left me quite stunned and wanting more. I went down to a Apple store in Ohio, and left with a brand new G4 500 Powerbook, and a G4 Tower, and will never look back. OS-X is what I was hoping XP would be and isn't. It is far more stable than Win2K, and its interface is the best I have ever seen. The computers themselves are a work of art. I honestly don't think that the majority of PC users know what they are missing. Goodbye beige PC's and hello PowerPC!

I am one of the early adopters of OS X.. I've had it since it was initially released. However, after waiting for 8 months for OS 10.1 so that finally my icon names WRAP, and other small details that should have been taken care of, it seems unfair that Apple is charging us at all for this release. And still, from my wish-list, Apple's 10.1 delivery falls short.. way short. Calling and corresponding with their development team about these small, but significant user improvements made me feel like I was being heard.. apparently by a wall.

After upgrading to OS X, I have had nothing but headaches. A completely redesigned interface, that leaves most of us in the old mac fold asking why?!? Why has Apple tried to emulate X-Window managers when the sleek, fast streamlined interface of yore was mature to the point of near perfection. Flashy graphics are not what Apple has been about. Apple has always been about speed, hardware driver/program support, and simplicity. OS X offers none of these in any quantity that could be comparable to OS IX. I only hope someone can help me out of this dark, torturous, labyrinth that is OS X.

MacOS has been, lightly put, sucky in every release prior to OSX 10.1. I was reluctant to purchase any sort of Mac, being an IT professional and a devoted PC (Windows/Unix/Linux) user. But now that OSX 10.1 has proved its worth I can be seen toting a G4 Cube. With the good hardware of a Cube, OSX is a good choice for any... much more optimized, for say, that OS9. I always marveled at how SLOW OS9 computers were whenever I (was forced to) use them. OSX eliminates this and adds a level of shine to the MacOS.

DVD playback support was never an issue for me, but across the board support for writing CD-RW/DVD-R rom the Finder was. Now that I have that, my system has surpassed both MacOS 9 and IRIX in terms of ability, functionality and fantastic ease of use. The things I can do on my Mac make any PC running Windows a distant last place finish; digital audio/video, 3D graphics with Lightwave 6.5b on OS X puts w2k out to pasture (I use LW on both platforms, as well as some work on IRIX, and OS X is by far the superior in terms of stability and rendering speed; my G4-500 can render complex scenes in a fraction of the time it takes on my 1.3Ghz PC) Currently, I have only one peripheral device that is not supported natively under OS X (but is supported under Classic), and that is my Epson Photo Stylus 870. That will (hopefully) be rendered moot on Nov 5 when Epson releases drivers for this particular printer. The combination of OS X, iTunes, iMovie, and iDVD make purchasing a new G4 the ultimate in consumer digital video and audio. Once Final Cut Pro is available for OS X, I'll have a complete studio available on a single platform for all my work - my SGI O2 can finally be completely retired. With such powerful applications as Lightwave 6.5/7 for OS X, the forth-coming Maya, and FCP for X, the Mac platform is certainly the undisputed champ for the creative field(s) concerning digital audio, video, and 2D/3D graphics. Now, if Adobe would just release Photoshop for OS X...

On your left, MacOS: a simple, yet powerful, OS with scriptable apps (AppleScript is great), with coherent interface guidelines, inter-app drag'n drop, killer apps... On your right, UNIX: the most stable OS, with great (and free) tools like Apache, MySQL, gcc, ideal for networking and automatizing tasks and computations. And now, MacOS X. All-in-one. I've been waiting for such an OS for years. 10.0 were pretty but too young. I've been using it since march to develop and I have to admit that was a painful experience. But this is PAST. Now 10.1 is fast and stable. Using Classic apps works very well (this is necessary for apps which have not been carbonized yet) and each day brings new native softs. I use it every day and I'm about to say farewell to 9.x. For the time beings, I only use Classic to launch Office programs. But as soon as Office for X is out, I'll be a X-only user. 10.1 is really GREAT. I've never been enthusiastic about an OS before. The only thing I miss are two sharewares: FinderPop and AliasMenu. Let's bet they will appear for X pretty soon. Apple has made a very nice work and I'm very glad to be a MacOS X user today.

System performance has been nearly flawless... 14 days uptime and counting with no degradation in system performance, speed or stability! The only thing that can stop this computer is a power outage. Let me qualify by saying that I have not installed OS 10 ... but have read extensive reviews and user reports. My point is this .... I am an independent graphics professional. I only get paid when I deliver. Every major OS upgrade has been painful ... in terms of downtime. Either third party or commercial software has new conflicts .. or drivers need to be located ... you know the drill. In my conversations with other graphics people around the country, I learn that no one has installed OS 10, nor has any intent to. We cannot afford to be "beta testers" and have our incomes in jeopardy (as if the economic downturn isn't enough incentive towards efficiency and zero downtme) Apple had best give lots of support to OS 9.1 for the graphics crowd. After all, we've pushed the merits of the Mac well beyond reach of Wintel for so many years ... would be a shame to have us reluctantly change sides.
