Great solution for wrist and arm painby glewis39 - November 10, 2010
Pros: Love the natural feel and position of the mouse -- completely eliminated my wrist and elbow pain
Cons: No cons -- love this mouse
Review: I love this mouse -- when I changed jobs recently, the first thing I did was have my new company buy me another one. I had problems with tendonitis in my elbow and wrist pain before that just wouldn't go away. When I searched around for a mouse, I found reviews on this one and I have been completely happy with it. No pain at all in the wrist or elbow once I started using it. The natural position of the arm and hand makes it completely relaxing to use. It did take some adjustment to get used to but less than a day. About the same adjustment as I have now if I try to use a normal mouse.

Mouse Ergonomics at it’s Best!by digital dude--2008 - July 18, 2007
Pros: Functional design with superb build quality
Cons: Mac OSX driver not included
Review: The Evoluent Vertical Mouse-2 should be on display in the The Evoluent Vertical Mouse-2 should be on display in the Smithsonian Institute. It is the first computer input device I’ve found that conforms to the anatomy of the human hand in such a way, that its ergonomic benefits are immediately realized.
Most people who buy this device are those with medical issues and I was no different. However, this mouse really should be considered by anyone who spends a lot of time on a computer.
Conclusion: Following several months of daily use, I can attest that the Evoluent mouse design, prevents the on-set of mouse related fatigue; feels great in my hand, and is fun to use!

Fixed my wrist problems-by kklausmeyer - May 1, 2007
Pros: Left-handed version, easy to use, great customer service, relieved tension in my wrist
Cons: Stopped working after a year but was replaced without questions
Review: My work is very mouse-intensive, and I was developing more and more tightness in my wrist and forearm. I went to several repetitive stress injury (RSI) clinics and redesigned my workspace, but the tension and pain would always return. I tried a roller ball and a joystick mouse, but I just couldn't get used to them. Finally, I got this vertical mouse and the tension quickly went away and has not returned in a year. I realized how much I need the mouse when it stopped working after about a year and I had to go back to my standard mouse. I sent an email to the company and got a replacement in 5 days without any hassle. Great customer service and great results.

The BEST mouse for RSI Sufferers!by courtneykillian - February 2, 2007
Pros: comfort, painless, sturdy, assignable buttons, both handed versions, helpful support, reasonable price
Cons: none, but wireless version would be great
Review: I suffer from numerous nerve injuries in both arms caused by years of overuse on standard keyboards and mice. I cannot use a normal mouse for more than 5 minutes without severe pain and swelling so I have tried every mouse, trackball, keyboard and other gadget out there in order to find a solution for using a computer after 4 nerve release surgeries.
The Vertial Mouse is THE ONLY mouse I have used that does not cause me pain, it is incredibly sturdy, and holds up very well to constantly being thrown in my backpack for traveling (unlike the similar Quill mouse which I found very fragile and broke if it ever fell the short distance from the desk to the ground).
It only takes a short time to become accustomed to the different hand/arm position -- but believe me -- if you use a computer alot, and even have the slightest concern about injuries to your arms -- this is the best product out there. A bonus: unlike most tech companies with non-helpful or non-existant support, this company actually responds quickly and goes above and beyond!! A+++++

Best vertical mouse I've used, everyone should be using one.by designitwrite - January 29, 2007
Pros: Great design, eliminated all carpal tunnel problems.
Cons: I can find nothing wrong with this product.
Review: I use my computer many hours a day for CAD design work. I have tried track ball mice and another brand of the vertical type. The Evoluent offers the stress relief of the vertical type and a superior design. The first brand I tried has a base that the side of your hand rests on. Thier design does not offer enough control. The Evoluent allows the side of your hand to contact the mouse pad. The friction from your hand allows you to better control the movement of the mouse. For me this means greater accuracy. I would recommend this mouse to anyone that wants a quality product that also works to relieve wrist related stress.

My Chiropractor loves it!by MbMinx - January 19, 2007
Pros: Reduces wrist tension and shoulder rotation
Cons: A little big for small hands...
Review: This mouse is comfortable and easy to learn - barely any drop in my productivity. As a CAD operator, I'm very mouse dependent for nine hours a day, and it was taking a toll on my arms and shoulders. A guy from a discussion board suggested the Evoluent Vertical mouse, so I bought one. It's been a week, and I'm cruisin' along. My wrist and shoulder pain are going away - my chiropractor asked me to bring in the information, and he tells me he's going to start recommending it to his other computer patients! About the only thing I don't like...I have small hands, and it's just a little bit big (but I'm used to that). Try it! You just might like it!

No pain! No Pain! No Pain!by barnabas1969 - January 4, 2007
Pros: NO PAIN!!! Great resolution. Scroll Wheel is nice and smooth!
Cons: Feels to slippery compared to the old version 1 vertical mouse.
Review: I've been using the vertical mouse for well over 2 years now.
When I first got the V1 mouse, I had a problem knocking it off my keyboard tray as one other user wrote here. This is just because I wasn't used to the height of the vertical mouse compared to a normal mouse. It didn't take long to train myself to pick my hand up higher off the tray when swinging my arm from the keyboard to the mouse.
Ever since using the vertical mouse, I no longer have forearm pain.
The optical scroll wheel in the vertical mouse 2 is a great improvement over the old version 1 vertical mouse. However, I liked the rubber grips on the old version 1 mouse better. Just as the first mouse took me a while to get used to, I suppose I will eventually get used to this one too.
I don't have any of the problems the CNET reviewer wrote about.
The only thing I still don't understand: Why didn't they design the original mouse this way?
I'll never go back to a standard mouse as long as I can get a vertical mouse.

Pros: eliminated arm and wrist pain
Cons: some paint problems, but these were readily addressed by Evoluent

Excellent Mouse for RSSby cbmckiss - July 28, 2006
Pros: For heavy computer users with RSS this is the last mouse you will need
Cons: Expensive for a mouse
Review: I've been using the VerticalMouse 2 for over a year now. I can honestly say that this mouse helped me keep my job. I work in a call center and basically spend my *ENTIRE* day in front of a computer taking calls and typing. My hand would go numb using a normal trackball mouse. I'd use an optical mouse but moving my wrist in the left to right motion is what really caused my pain. When using the vertical mouse I don't acutually move my wirst, instead I'm moving my whole forearm.
This mouse is not for everyone. I get odd stares at my desk when ever anyone stops by. Since I'm at my desk evey day it didn't take me very long to get use to it, a week at most. I don't need a wrist guard or a gel thingie any more either. I wish I had found this mouse *before* I spent as much money as I did on wrist guards and everything, I probably could have bought two of these instead. Yes it is an expensive mouse. When you think about a 30$ wrist splint 10$ mouse gell and another 10$ keyboard gell and 25$ more dollar because the last wrist splint was crap you have just bought a VerticalMouse 2. I'm no longer in pain and none of those worked! I haven't had the need for surgery (scary) for my wrist and I'm no longer in pain, this is a great mouse.
The editor complained about the scorll wheel not working, it may have been a defective unit, mine still works fine. Again I've used this mouse every day at work for over a year and I have no pain in my wrist. For anyone like me who has pain in their wrist this is worth a try considering the other products you probably have at your desk.
Updated
I last wrote a review of this mouse back in July 28, 2006. I've since changed jobs but not mice! I still do not have any RSS pain and when you consider that the mouse has lasted for 3 years it's more than made up the initial price. I see there is a wireless Vertical Mouse, I wish it were bluetooth wireless instead of USB wireless that's my only complaint/request.

Not just pain-free, but a joy to useby PhilBixby - June 24, 2006
Pros: Natural wrist position relaxes the whole arm and shoulder
Cons: It's relatively expensive in the UK (but what price comfort?)
Review: I've had recurring problems with a trapped nerve giving hand / arm / shoulder pain, which was regularly made worse by long sessions at the computer, which gradually sent the discomfort in my forearm up to my shoulder and neck. Switching to the VerticalMouse has helped enormously, giving a much more comfortable hand position, especially alongside a compact keyboard. But.. ..even better than that, it's a lovely tool to use. The programmable buttons make it a joy to use, and the old saying about "once you've used it you'll never want to go back.." really does apply here.

Pros: No adaptation needed, perfect touch, high pointer precision.
Cons: Minimal laquer weakness possible
Review: I'd finally bought two VerticalMouse2 mice, a silver one and a black/purple one. For my hand and shoulder problems, they are really THE solution - MANY THANKS FOR THAT INVENTION! Why aren't all mice like this!? Especially the black part of the mouse is great - what a nice touch!

Search no longer for a comfortable, well constructed, very usable ergonomic mouse.by dayquil - March 4, 2006
Pros: Great weight and action, very high resolution, small footprint, nice materials and attractive look
Cons: no wireless version
Review: This mouse is brilliantly designed. It has a much smaller footprint than the ergo mice I'm used to, but still manages to do the core job of keeping your hand in a natural position beautifully. It's also very solid, with button action and resolution that we've come to expect from more experienced makers such as logitech or whoever. Bottom line, it offers the features, construction, and usability of a high quality conventional mouse. I can't express how impressed and surprised I was at how excellent this mouse was after having used a couple of others that were really, aside from decent ergonomic designs, just hollow plastic pieces of junk. This mouse matches or exceeds the quality and usability of the similarly priced mice I used to use before I had ergonomic issues to worry about. I'm very pleased with it and would recommend it in a heartbeat.

This mouse saved me from a lot of pain! If you have mouse related arm pain, try it!by laptopuser - December 20, 2005
Pros: The new VerticalMouse 2 seems to work perfectly.
Cons: The old model had some kind of driver issue occasionally effecting the scroll wheel operation.
Review: After years of cruising the internet and computing on my laptops I had developed some pains in my arms and wrists. I tried an articulated keyboard which helped a little but I still had a lot of pain in my right arm and wrist. I searched and found the original vertical mouse by evoluent. I bought and the pain dissapeared. I used it for years and took it everywhere. It makes a pretty large bulge in a laptop bag! And then recently, I thought I might try a wireless laser mouse. I had forgotten the pain. After a month of regular mousing, the pain in my arm returned. So now, switching between a G4 iBook and my PC laptop, I decided to get a second vertical mouse. I got this new model and so far so good. I haven't seen the occasional driver problem I had with the original model that made the scroll wheel jump occasionally. So far, this one has worked perfectly and I'll tell you, if you have mouse related arm pain, and you don't want to spend a lot on medical intervention, give this a try. It has done wonders for me.

A wonderful Mouseby itango - December 8, 2005
Pros: Good design, very comfortable, size just right
Cons: Price, scroll wheel could be better, no "cordless" capability
Review: I spend 12+ hours a day on the computer because of my job, and was beginning to have carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand - I would get shooting pains in my hand, and sometimes I would drop things. Then I found this wonderful mouse by accident on the web - I immediately bought 2. Now, my hand does not hurt anymore, and I find the sideways (handshake) position very natural.

The best mouse out there for CTS that is easy to use.by adarab - November 10, 2005
Pros: Greatly reduced pain, very precise
Cons: Sometimes when the mouse is removed while the computer is on, you need to reinstall software when you plug the mouse back in for the buttons to work as you originally set them.
Review: As a graphic designer, I have two great mouse concerns: 1. Reduce/remove pain and 2. A precise mouse that "flows." This mouse is the best I've used in preventing finger, wrist, and arm pain. It takes some getting used to (I'd say less than a day at the office), but once you do, it is very precise and you barely even have to move it. The buttons click easily and it is nice that you can personalize their settings. It is just annoying that if I ever take out the mouse while the computer is on, when I plug it back in, it thinks it's new hardware, and I have to reinstall the software in order for the buttons to work properly. Other than that, no major complaints. Overall, I am more than satisfied. A note to Mac users: though the mouse is Mac compatible, there is a $20 program you need to buy in order to program all of the buttons. My friend got it, and it STILL didn't properly program! Thankfully, I'm a PC user

Wow. Use the product before you talk.by Clinkzz - September 29, 2005
Pros: New idea - ergonomical design
Cons: Not for long term use
Review: What irritates me is that some people submitting their ratings and reviews are speaking as though they have actually tried it, and this can be decieving to people actually going to buy the mouse.
Honestly, unless ur working for les than an hour, this mouse sucks. Sure the design is nice and new etc, but it has uncomfortable aspects as well - and isn't that what ergonomics is AGAINST?
The drag drove me INSANE - really. And i don't care how clean ur desk is - your wrist feels nasty afterwards.

Amazingly comfortableby gmanzero - August 19, 2005
Pros: Relieves wrist stress
Cons: Purple???? Button tactile response could be better, Expensive
Review: Take your typical mouse in hand and then tilt your hand to the side. Feel anything different? For me, I could feel the stress imediately removed from my wrist. After thinking about this for a while I decided to look for a vertical mouse and settled on the Evoluent VerticalMouse 2. Upon receipt I plugged it into my Mac and other than having to initially readjust my tracking speed it has worked flawlessly. When I first tried it out it felt a little odd when navigating but very comfortable in the wrist. I'd say it took about an hour of use to really get used to it. But the difference in comfort over a standard mouse is amazing. My hand and wrist feel so relaxed. The tactile response is not quite as good as my old Logitech wheel mouse and I'm not crazy about the purple color (what were they thinking?). If it hadn't been for these two things I would have given this mouse a higher rating. If you spend a lot of time at a computer with mouse in hand, I definitely recommend this product.

Great to use; one small glitchby mjurach - May 23, 2005
Pros: Very comfortable. Highly modular button selection
Cons: single-click selection occasionally misfires
Review: I really like this mouse. It feels very natural, after I took a couple of days to get used to it. I enjoy having five totally assignable buttons--my web browsing with Firefox has been greatly enhanced.
Other people no longer use my computer because the mouse scares them--this is another plus!
Only con is that several times a day an attempted right-click will cause the page to first jump up several lines right before the click. This often results in a wrong selection. Annoying, but not enough to make me switch back.

Great product, BUT easy to knock on floor. Will use until something as good/better comes along.by algolguy - April 19, 2005
Pros: Very comfortable for a former carpal tunnel patient
Cons: Fragile: Knocked it on floor twice. Wouldn't work afterwards.
Review: I've used several mouses and alternatives, before and after having carpal tunnel surgery. Included trackballs, several touchpads, the 3M ergonomic joystick-type mouse. This has been the most comfortable, but to prevent shoulder injury I have a swing-away mouse platform in front of the right-hand keyboard num pad. I have knocked this mouse on the floor twice in the space of 3 weeks. Both times the mouse buttons were inoperable. Evoluent was nice about fixing it the first time and quickly getting it back to me. The second time, I didn't hear from them for a couple months. Fortunately I had my Evoluent 1 mouse to use during that time. When I contacted them, it was obvious they had lost the mouse. They provided me with a 2nd replacement with the warning: "but there is no more replacement if you drop it again."

Finally, an ergonomic mouse, left-hand friendlyby joecalarco - April 6, 2005
Pros: Wrist position, ease of use, 4 programmable buttons + 1 wheel
Cons: Price should match right-hand version. For Mac, software should be included.
Review: Run this mouse with the third-party driver (for Mac), using a non-shiny mouse pad with wrist rest. The result will be precise mousing control and intuitive operation within the first few minutes, bliss after the first day as your carpal tunnel gives a sigh of relief. It is remarkable how effortless this feels, raising productivity to new levels. The Lexus of mice.

Wrist pain is gone! Natural fit and comfort immediately.by dazzed - March 23, 2005
Pros: I love it. It took less time to get use to than you'd think.
Cons: After 3 weeks of extensive use I still haven't found a problem.
Review: My job requires very heavy mouse work. I often work with 5 applications at a time. Even using keyboard shortcuts, I can't avoid using the mouse (a lot). My wrist was in so much pain I thought I would have to quit this job which I love. I looked at 5 different ergonomic mice. Tried this one. The difference was immediate. Light vertical touch-reduces stress. Programmable buttons reduce mouse clicks & optical resolution reduces wrist movements. I would encourage anyone with wrist pain to go vertical. I got mine on-line for $60. Shop around, my work paid for it!!

Works in concept and executionby Noumenon - March 23, 2005
Pros: Hand rests on desk, makes programmable buttons more useful
Cons: Version 1didn't work well with Windows XP user accounts
Review: I only have the VerticalMouse 1, but it's the best. Your hand doesn't "drag" when you use it, because you rarely move your hand at all. It's like you're in a long handshake with your mouse, and moving it uses your muscles as though you were kneading its palm.
With your hand free from picking up the mouse all the time, the programmable buttons are very useful. I can click the thumb button to close a window, the scroll wheel to delete a file or text, and I set the bottom-most button to scroll lock, which also opens a link in a new tab in Firefox. Very, very convenient and worth the $56 I paid for it (it was cheaper and wired then).
Again, this is likely to have changed, but the version 1 software didn't work in Windows XP user accounts except the main one. For my family, it was just a mouse. But I just had to write to defend the nature of this great mouse series from a reviewer who didn't get it!

Cured my wrist painby wamaruna - March 23, 2005
Pros: Ergo design, 5-button functionality plus wheel
Cons: Takes a while to get used to; expensive
Review: Like the other user reviewers, I take strong exception to the CNET review of this product - and no, I am not affiliated with the manufacturer, just a happy user. Perhaps the reviewer did not take adequate time to acclimate himself to the product. I own three of these - two version 1 models, and now a new version 2. The resolution (speed) of the new version takes some getting used to - it is very fast. I also like the clickless scroll wheel change of version 2. The thumb button is a bit too sensitive, and the sensitivity of the whole mouse has been intensified. I originally bought a version 1 for home use when my wrist was aching after a day at work. It helped so much I quickly bought a second to use at work. Now I've built an additional new machine for use at home, and decided to add a new version 2 despite the cost, which is up from version one. In addition to the ergo benefits, I absolutely love having three buttons plus the thumb button plus the wheel/button. I use the middle button for double-click, which is much easier than using the wheel click on a conventional mouse. Their early drivers only provided 5-button capability when used with USB connection, but later drivers have extended that functionality to PS/2 installs. There is a 'getting used to' period of about a week, and you can get frustrated with mouse movement when clicking until you get used to it, but after that, it's great.

Great mouse, bad reviewby sewiv - March 22, 2005
Pros: comfortable position, no pain
Cons: rubber coating gets sweaty after 3 or 4 hours of gaming
Review: I don't know what the reviewers' problem was, but this mouse is excellent. I actually have a Version 1 that I took to work, after replacing it with a Version 2 at home. I like the feel of the V1 (smooth outer shell, click wheel) a bit better, but the resolution of the V2 blows it away. I've never seen the problem of XP and sleep mode that the reviewers mentioned, nor do I understand their reference to their difficulties with gravity. Yes, the side of your hand ends up resting on the mouse mat. Big deal. I can use this mouse for hours without pain or numbness. A normal mouse makes my hand numb within 10 minutes or less.
Maybe the reviewers just have a problem with change.

Far more comfortable mouseby sm789 - March 22, 2005
Pros: No discomfort after prolonged use; highly accurate movement.
Cons: I don't find any cons.
Review: This is the most comfortable mouse I've ever used and I've tried almost every design on the market. I now use it on two computers. I can't understand the reviewer's problems. It has a completely natural feeling and doesn't cause discomfort as all traditional mice do after awhile. I don't understand the reviewer's "gravity" issue. The side of my right hand rests on the mouse pad and slides easily, and I can't understand why the reivewer had a problem moving the hand over to the keyboard. I've had no problems with scroll wheels. I think this is one of the most off-base reviews I've read.

Do not agree, this mouse is great, saved my wrists.by compguy - March 22, 2005
Pros: Fits great to hand, easy to use
Cons: no wireless model - yet
Review: I strongly disagree with this review. This mouse is a quality mouse and feels solid in my hand. I tried the "Quill" vertical mouse which was really bad - cheap plastic and horrible feel. This mouse is the opposite. After using this mouse, my carpel significantly went away. I have NO complaints in that department now.
This is too bad because this mouse will make a difference, I can't recommend it enough. The "hand in the air" idea is nonsense - you can rest your hand on a flat surface no problem. There is NO awkwardness - it's just a mouse on its side and once you get used to it you will see that it's the "traditional" mouse that is awkward!

Fixed my carpal tunnel syndromeby smortaz - March 22, 2005
Pros: Version 2 is better engineered
Cons: None. V1 click button kept getting stuck.
Review: Due to my wrist problems, i used to actually turn the regular mice 90 degrees to avoid wrist pain. unfortunately that works only when scrolling (w roller) or clicking. So when this vertical mouse arrived i was delighted. Version's button kept getting stuck & they sent me a V2 for free. I've been extremely happy w it & have recommending it to everyone w wrist problems. It DOES take a few days to get used to it. But after that it feels quite natural & comfortable. i dont know what the reviewer is talking about regarding gravity. The side of your hand is on the table and bears the weight. No different than regular mice where your palm bears the weight. Of course unless you'e Popeye and your arm weighs 30 pounds.
