"Tendency for the cursor to drift"

by pmarshall on August 9, 2005

Pros: Relatively easy setup. No learning curve if used as regular desktop mouse.

Cons: Cursor has tendency to drift when using air mouse (needs to be reset by placing on desktop frequently). Buttons not optimally placed. Needs an off switch so you can carry it without wasting battery

Summary: I've used Gyration products for over 8 years. Mostly the wired Gyromouse (which Gyration has not made in a long time). I've periodically bought the wireless versions to see if the ergonomics have improved. Mostly I've been disappointed in comparison to their old (wired) version. The emphasis for Gyration has been for presentation, which I think was a mistake, the wired version was the absolute BEST pointing device for laptops ever made (IMHO). The wireless version is useless for mobile use since you require power to charge the unit (and there is no off switch so it tends be on all the time when carrying in luggage) and it is problemattic whether you can use a wireless device on a plane. I use the device very little for presentation, it is my primary pointing device on my desktop (I also use a graphics tablet). Frankly the buttons were better placed on the old wired Gyromouse (on the sides, with convention mouse buttons on the top). My primary gripe is that the newer Gyration wireless mice are designed to be used in the same orientation as the desktop mode (buttons up). The old mice were buttons up on the desktop and sideways for air mouse use. Ergonomically this made a lot more sense since when you pick up the mouse (which you do frequently when using as an air mouse), you have to shift the mouse in your hand rather than picking it up in the orientation you are actually going to use it.

The mouse cursor needs to be frequently reset when using it in the air mouse mode (by placing it on the desktop for four seconds, per Gyration instructions). This may be specific to the mouse I have, but it is extremely annoying if you are using it as a primary pointing device.
    Updated
Hint, if you need to carry the mouse around, you need to remove the battery pack (no off switch), otherwise it will deplete by turning on continuously (which is a bummer if you have presentation immediately at the end of your trip). Note that I would keep a small plastic bag for this, since the open contacts on the battery do present a fire risk if they come into contact with conductive materials (don't throw the battery loose into your luggage!).

I have the same problems with this mouse. I bought this mouse expecting that I could get an up on the next stage in computer mice and get a little experience with what the Revolution controller would be like thinking that I would get better overall accuracy in my fps games with this. Overall I would say that this mouse does meet my expectations and goes a little above that, it just needs practice, but like you said, the cursor will frequently drift on the screen after usage. I didn't know before that holding the connect button would shut off the mouse though, which I thank the last person who commented for making known. The cursor while in desktop mode does drift sometimes when it's left alone (probably due to the gyro thing turning on for some reason) on the desk but it isn't an issue when the mouse is in use. With the amount of itereations of these types of mice, you would think that this type of problem would have been fixed by now, or maybe the technology for doing it correctly while still being cost effective is still unavailable. Well anyway, this mouse in desktop mode is the same 800dpi as my last wired logitech mouse, so overall this is a good buy for me cause it is basically a wireless upgrade from my last mouse.

My mouse doesn't drift - you should check with technical support - maybe a defective unit. Also, you can turn the mouse off (without having to remove the battery) by holding down the "connect" button on the bottom of the mouse for approximately 10 seconds. The optical sensor will blink 3 times and shuts off. To turn on repeat the procedure but only need to depress connect button for 2-3 seconds. Hope this helps.
