    "Excellent accessory for your laptop"

by pmarshall on January 15, 2009

Pros: Easy to use, built in 1GB flash takes up one less USB port, great for presentations or just general mobile use. AAA battery means you never run out of power just before an important presentation.

Cons: Could have been somewhat more ergonomically designed.

Summary: Some people might find the lack of an optical mouse in the GyroTransport to be a negative. I have been asking for just such a mouse. I have a Gyration Go and 99.9% of the time I use it in the air. The optical mouse just gets in the way of the air mouse function and biases the design to be a big, clunky, mass which does not fit in your hand very well as an air mouse. The GyroTransport is tiny. With a little practise you can even hold it in your hand while you type (albeit a little more clumsily). When you are using your laptop on well... your laptop... it is a lot better than the idiotic little glidepoint surface for most operations. There is a learning curve, but you can very quickly develop the technique for moving the cursor and by holding your thumb a little to the left of the "move" button you can press both the "move" and "left" buttons simultaneously to perform a drag (the mouse operation not the clothing option). I don't think you can use a bluetooth device on a plane, but if you could this would be the absolute best mobile pointing device. You don't need a flat surface, you can operate it in any position you find comfortable (behind your back if you are a contortionist). The AAA battery lasts a fairly long time (the LEDs in optical wireless mice draw a lot more power). I haven't tried it with rechargeable batteries yet because the first alkaline battery hasn't worn out yet in a week. When you are travelling you don't have to worry about recharging, just carry some spare AAA's. The other nice thing is that there is a slide on/off/profile selector switch. This means you can turn it off in a second and be sure it's really off. I have used it for hours at a time and it is fairly comfortable. It was designed as a presentation device, but I think you can use this as a normal "mouse" and abandon that thing you push around on the table.
