"Hi-MD Mindisc rules" on by gregmc

Pros: expandable library of music, sound quality

Cons: Native MP3 playback may be a little late for Sony

Summary: just a note,. why does this site have all these MINIDISC recorders listed as being Flash based players? This can be very deceiving to someone not familiar with the format.
I won't waste a lot of time or space on this review,. I'll just say this: If you are in the market for a portable music player/recorder (yes these minidisc units have huge recording capabilities),. definitely give the Sony Hi-MD portables serious consideration. I've been using minidisc for years now and have been very happy with the sound quality, flexibility and durability of minidisc.
    enough said.

"Great Multi-Functional MiniDisc player" on by ebecker82

Pros: Low cost, line-in/mic-in, compatible with remote, 5 line, customizable EQ, good battery life, highly portable, rechargable battery included, AC Adaptor included, expandable music library, MP3 support!

Cons: Remote not included, hard to see display in less-than-idea lighting conditions

Summary: I got this more for recording than playback, but have found that it's an exceptional thing for both. 64kbps ATRAC3plus sounds better to my ears than 128kbps MP3. Expandable disc-by-disc, much cheaper to expand your library/capacity than a flash player. High-capacity 1 GB discs going for about $7 apiece means that for the $250 you'd spend for 4 gig capacity with an iPod mini you can probably get about 6 gigs, and since they're not hard drives, dropping the device isn't nearly as high-risk/fatal as on the iPod. Includes a 1 GB disc to get you started. Also compatible with the old-school MD technologies to play your older MDs and can also use the double-layer technology to record a higher amount of material on a regular 60/74/80 MB disc (about 10 hours at ATRAC3plus 64kbps.)

For Mic/Line recordings: Recording at HI-SP (256kbps) comprable to uncompressed. You get 2 hours 20 minutes on a regular disc and almost 8 hours on a 1 GB disc in this format (as opposed to 29 minutes on a regular and 1 hour 34 minutes on a 1 GB when recording uncompressed.) Also can record 10 hours on a regular MiniDisc with Hi-LP mode and about 35 on a 1 GB disc (though I haven't checked the quality of these recordings I'd assume that this would be ideal for recording lectures and meetings where sound quality needs to be good enough to listen back, but where crisp top-quality recording isn't a priority.)

Not a perfect product, but for around $200, a great buy. I'd recommend it to friends and family and acquaintances with an interest in portable music devices. I'll keep telling my enemies to buy iPods and tell them "hey, iPods are great, you can bounce them like a basketball!"

"Significantly Cheaper! Significantly Better!" on by Stamp

Pros: Multiple Inputs, Giant screen, Digital Amp, much MUCH Cheaper Same features as RH-10

Cons: Dust gets into the Disk

Summary: Before i make this review, note that the last year's model, the nh-600D was EXACTLY THE SAME PRICE.

for the same price, you now get:
    line-in, mic in, optical in
    Line out
    5 (five) line display,
MP3 native capabilities (no more atrac!)
    Remote
    Power adapter!
    Charging cradle

AND since you can take inputs, combined with hi-MD tech., you can UPLOAD YOUR RECORDINGS into sonicstage, and have it export the file into a WAV file!

you hard drive stinglers may like this new feature for SS3.0. you can configure sonicstage to automatically delete the atrac3 file it created when you convert your files to transfer to a hi-md device. But thats not really required anymore, because its now OPTIONAL! thats right! hi-md now supports 32-320kbps mp3! (fixed OR VARIBALE)

The Digital AMP marginally improves sound. doubled with the 6 band EQ youre set to go!

    "Hidden Jewel!" on by natevo

Pros: Battery life, MP3 support, recording capabilities, sound quality, built in EQ, digital amp, FIVE (!) line display, easy buttons, FAST upload and download, backwards compatable with MD (holds 13hrs.!)

Cons: Low on accessories - No remote :-( , no case, front panel scratches a bit easy (like any other plastic I guess).

Summary: The battery life on this unit is amazing, 35 hrs. when playin ATRAC3 files, and 25-30 with MP3. Yay for SONY for finally getting native support for MP3s (33-XXkpbs), for those audio buffs who want to do more than just play songs, this unit has quite powerful recording capabilities. Will record CD quality with the right MIC. Great sound quality thanks to the built in EQ and the high power digital amp, FIVE (!) line display - a big step up for those of you used to the old three line, easy buttons organized in an intuitive pattern make navigating through songs a breeze, FAST upload and download time means you can throw songs back and forth when you are in a hurry, a bonus is the backwards compatability with MD (which cost only $1.50 and hold 13hrs. in ATRAC3). In a nutshell, an audio device for those who want more than just an MP3 player but don't want to pay anymore money. SONY has my vote on this one. Although they might have curried a bit more favor if they had included a remote and case. But that is easily rectified, and for the features this baby has, it is still well worth the money.

"NOT A FLASH PLAYER" on by earborne

    Pros: Minidisc, not flash

    Cons: SonicStage software

    Summary: Wake up, Cnet!

This is NOT a Flash player. It plays removable 1 GB Hi-MD discs that cost $7 each--compare that to the cost of 1 GB flash cards.
