Only because of the poor service and support by Dell this player is NOT recommended

Pros: Easy operation

Cons: Equipment and Support is poor

Review: I purchased a Dell DJ in April of 2005. Initially I loved it. In Nov 2005 there seemed to be a short in the headset jack. Dell replaced it. The exact same problem happened to the new player just 2 months later. Dell replaced it again in Jan 2006. Not even a year later the newest player did the same thing. November 2006 it happened again, the same problem, the headphone jack. Dell will not replace it because the ?original? warranty ran out. Unlike many warranties, the players warranty does not begin again when you receive a replacement. It is from the original purchase date. I was not have given the opportunity to purchase an extended warranty after the first replacement. The player itself is very simple to operate and I like the updated software. Too bad Dell will not stand behind it. That is the most disappointing. I am a fan of this player but my next purchase will be from Apple. The player when working was great but I have to rate it low because it is not sturdy enough to last a year and Dells service drags the rating down.

Worst desision of my life

Pros: price, storage capacity

Cons: pain to sync use, customer support sucks, not durable

Review: To their credit after countless hours of chatting with rude customer suport, and trying to sync songs to 3 refurbished replacment dj's dell finaly broke down and gave me 50% of my money back on my original purchase. I guess dell did the logical thing and discontinued this awful product. I took that money and used it to help pay for an ipod, and i couldn't be happier!

A total piece of junk! I should got the iPod video when I have the chance!

Pros: cost less than an iPod, and that's it!

Cons: too many things wrong with it!

Review: I bought a dell dj in April and I have to say it was the worst choice I have ever made! They have sent me 12 replacement DJs because the first 11 kept freezing, saying frimware error even nothing was wrong with it, and when I would play a song, it would stop in the middle of the song and make it start from the beginning, and I didn't do a thing! Now my warranty is out and the one they sent me is acting up, and now they want me to pay them $150 dollars for another "refurbished" DJ. Forgit that my mom works for shop at home and she can get me a 30 gig iPod $300! All of my friends have iPods and I have never heard ONE complaint from them, even from the ones who have the 1st generation iPod. Trust me, DO NOT go and by this crap thing! I promise you, you WILL be sorry if you do!

BUY AN IPOD

Pros: Price over IPOD

Cons: Everything else

Review: Horrible customer service. When my second DJ locked up (first one died after 3 months) they refused to refund my money. Customer service agents are overseas and don't speak/type English very well.

I Can't Stand My DJ

Pros: compact, blue back light

Cons: transferring songs, accessories

Review: I purchased my dj back in 12/04 and I regret it to this day. I have over 950 songs on my dj and it only plays about 920. Does anyone know why this happens? The technician at dell did not know what he was talking about and told me to erase all of the songs and retransfer them!!! Who has time to erase over 900 songs and transfer them again? In addition, I also purchase an fm transmitter to use in my car that was trash and never worked, I was supposed to receive another one that never came. I broke down and brought a tape adapter to use in my car, it works ok. This product is poorly manufactured and the technicians do not know how to fix the problems that occur. I can see why dell stopped making this product...

Dell DJ, RIP - Another one bites the dust!!

Pros: You'll find these cheap in the discontinued products bin

Cons: Problematic software, poor interface, cheap looking.

Review: As I predicted about a year ago, the DJ has finally bit the dust. I believe the days of the Dell DJ Ditty are numbered also, especially with Apple dropping the price on the Shuffle. Unlike other companies like Creative that are losing money in the MP3 player business (look at their recent financials, poor results blamed on "intense competition in the MP3 player market...") but continue to stay in the game for reasons of ego and pride, Dell operates in a pure business-like fashion and quickly axes under performing products. Here is a clear example that companies should stick to what they do best. Dell gave us a reskinned Creative player (made by Creative, in fact) with little or nothing to distinguish it from the hordes or players in the market other than the Dell logo and the cheesy marketing campaign. If I wanted a Creative product, why don't I just go buy a Creative product? Why would I want a Creative product with the Dell logo on it? Seems HP tried this strategy with their HP iPod, and that effort also failed quickly. May the Dell DJ rest in peace in the company of the HP iPod, the Rio, and the hordes of forgettable Sony MP3 players ....

good quality horrible software

Pros: Not Available

Cons: Not Available

Review: i bought the 2nd gen. of the 20 gb dell dj and spent over 500 after all was said and done.it has okay battery life.somewhat easy to navigate.BUT the horrible software (and i even paid the extra cash for the upgraded software) the mp3 player will play for 15 seconds and just stop.you have to turn the player off then back on to listen for another 15 seconds.sometimes it will does this more often that not.in fact even after spending all that cash for it i just went out and bought an I river because the dell was driving me insane.not a colour screen.the writting on the back rubs of if you touch it with wet hands.and the dell customer support is they worst i have ever encountered.i will never buy any dell product EVER again.they are rude.they give you a run around.even to the point of when i called they transfered me to a spanish speaking employee!!and i dont speak anything but english.dell usa and dell canada are totally different.i am in canada and dell canada does'nt sell protective carrying cases and dell usa refused to ship me one even if i payed the shipping!!!so i had to go to ebay just to buy a case for something i paid over 500 dollars for.i bought this so i didnt have an ipod like everyone else.but please save your money and dont buy dell products.everyone i know who has bought a dell product (a combined of 1 desktop computer,1 laptop,2 mp3 players and PDA)and not one of these people are satisfied with the product or the service.i gave it a 4 for its durability but nothing higher for the crummy software.if i took dells customer service in to account for this review it would definatly be a 0 but that wont be fair to the product.you have been warned

Buy the I-pod 30gb for $50 more

Pros: Easy to use,

Cons: Poor battery life, only about 18.5 gb not the full 20 of use

Review: This is a bare bones unit. No frills. The inline remote is a waste of time. The earbuds are awful. The charging charging connection is bulky and cumbersome (you have to have the USB cord connected to charge, unless you buy their optional parts. The battery life is extremely bad, 8 hours max with low volume and no backlighting. It does have good sound quality and the PC interface works well. Makes for a good data transfer unit. For another $50 the Ipod 30gb is a much better unit, better battery life, smaller size, more aftermarket options...

Cons: the software that comes with it is not that good.

Just too many bugs with this player to make it a competent choice

Pros: Good price; plays WMA files with DRM protection; works easily with MusicMatch Jukebox

Cons: This player simply crashes way too much. Mine has locked almost constantly. Completely annoying

Review: I bought the Dell DJ because I wanted an MP3 player that could handle WMA files with DRM protection and that I could readily use with MusicMatch software. It DOES do those thing but . . . This player simply crashes way too much. Mine has locked almost constantly. It's completely frustrating. I have taken to carrying a paper clip with me so I can access the RESET pinhole. And sometimes that doesn't work. I have had to "clean" the hard drive many times which is a cumbersome procedure. In addition, I have frequently found that when I try to charge the player through the USB connection, it goes into a "docking" loop in which I can't charge the battery. It's a complete roll of the dice whether the unit will actually charge properly once I connect it to the USB.
Do NOT buy a Dell DJ. You are only buying a headache.

I have a Dell DJ20 and it has been replaced and the next one doesn't work now.

Pros: Its nice when it works

Cons: The player has no life to it. it needs to be replaced frequently

Review: I received a Dell Dj as a presant and it didn't work. Right off the bat it had to be exchanged. Now about 10 months later it stopped working again and I have been trying to comunicate with the Customer Care, but it is horrible. One guy yelled at me and then hung up on me! As of right now the company recomends I buy another Dell DJ. I haven't had it a year and I am on my second one (that they now won't replace) and they tell me there is nothing they can do for me. Look on many sites many customers have had problems with this product. If I could give it a zero I would

Great mp3 player with no extras

Pros: Only crashed once (unlike the iPod), battery life is good

Cons: Hard to make playlists, hard to add songs to current playlist

Review: This is a great mp3 player for people who do not obsess about music. I only use it about 4 times a week, usually in my car driving around. It plays music well. It is kind of big to fit in your pocket, but I bought a belt clip for it. It is pretty heavy, but I don't mind. It has only crashed once unlike my sister's iPod mini which has been exchanged 3 times in a year. I never have trouble with it.I would recommend this to people who do not obsess over there music.

Great unit

Pros: built with quality, easy to use

Cons: embedded songs in software, poor response from Music Match

Review: I love my Dell DJ, i have had it for a year now and I went almost went through analysis paralysis, trying to decide what type of player to get. I am glad that I chose the Dell, The downside is the embedded free songs, (that I have tried to erase without success) and also that I get song listings that say unknown artist and album, even though it is listed on my MusicMatch library.

Hard Drive Crashes!!! Unit Freezes!

Pros: Works as good as any HDD models.

Cons: The HDD fails, need to buy extended warranty!!!!

Review: Dell units are known for their HDD freezing & crashing even after limited use. You loose all your music and there's no repair capability after warranty. Dell support is awful & they don't stand behind their products. If you get the extended warranty this unit will fail within the year the warranty expires. In other words - this will work for 3 (& a bit) years if you buy the extended warranty. Pittiful!!!

AN AWSOME MP3 Player

Pros: Durable, Small, Sleek, User friendly, looks awsome!!!!

Cons: Nothing yet..............it is AWSOME!!!

Review: THIS IS FAR THE BEST MP3 PLAYER EVER!!! I have had no problems with it so far (I bought it 2 months ago). The DJ is nice and sleek, a much better exterior design than the iPod. It is sturdy and quite durable, a thing I expected from Dell. The battery life is good and it charges really fast (2hours). The lighting for the buttons and the screen is sooooo much better than an iPod. Best yet..........the DJ is $100 less than the iPod. The exterior is built to last for a LONG time, whereas the iPod is incased in 2 pieces which can easily come off if dropped several times. (I had an iPod before, so I know). The interface (OS) is MUCH BETTER than the iPod. It does not lag like the iPod does. Overall, it is the best thing out there. An AWSOME buy!!!!

Dell has good audio quality, blue lights look cool in the dark, extremely durable

Pros: good audio, decent battery life, good size, durable

Cons: Music program is horrible, bad navigation

Review: I own one of these since christmas '04 and I'd say its a average player. It is a good player for people who just need something to carry their music and not care about no extra features.
I was once in a restaurant with it and I dropped it on the floor, probably a 4 foot drop and it was fine it just turned off when it fell but it turned right back on and everything was fine. That's how durable it is! One problem, the Musicmatch program is horrible! I buy my music off of iTunes. So, I buy the music from iTunes then I have to put it on a cd then upload it to musicmatch then I have to name it then I have to delete all of my music from the mp3 player then I have to add it all on again (if u dont do this the song won't be in alphebetical order with the rest of the music!) Hope I could help!

bad all around

Pros: none to mention

Cons: too numerous

Review: Worked OK for a while until the harddisk started going bad. I have replaced this thing 2 times already for the same thing, harddisk failure, now its gone again. If Dell would have replaced with new instead of somebody elses defective refurbished trash, maybe they would have the financial incentive to fix them right. Warranty's done. I'll be looking for something different. I've never been a fan of Dell anyway. Bad software as well.

Bad Battery life, huge size, and dumb scroll barrel. GET AN IPOD INSTEAD!

Pros: Completes its function. That is it.

Cons: scroll barrel, blue backlight with black text, and the thing is massive!

Review: This is the lamest mp3 on the market. I mean, come on folks. If you are going to get an mp3 player that is not an iPod, at least get a Zen player. But these dell players are no good. I had the original Dell DJ and it froze on me constantly. The blue backlight combined with the black text makes menues hard to read and navigation is also a hassle. The songs are arranged in alphabetical order, which you can change, but is just an extra hassle. I bought the other DJ thinking that I would be smart and save money. I had it for a year, or should I say dealt with it for a year, and ended up buying an iPod anyway. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration, and get an iPod. I mean, the iPod's all come with color screens, they have the trademark, and also amazing click wheel, and they never freeze. Plus, I got crap underneath my DJs screen, even a crumb of food! The iPod's case is seamless, and it is made so much better. It is smaller, lighter, plays better, doesn't freeze, and is just an all around better player. For those who are reading, here is my advice: unless Dell shrinks their players and comes out with a color screen sometime soon, don't waste your time. Go with the iPod and be happier in the long run.

Highly functional, great price, no frills.

Pros: Reasonably priced, huge memory, easy menus.

Cons: Slightly heavy, annoying prompts to upgrade Jukebox by Music Match software

Review: I bought the Dell DJ-20 for my wife and we both love it. It holds tons of music for both of us. It's easy to use sounds great. The software is easy to learn and use.

User Rating: 9/10

Great Product, Even Greater Price!

Pros: 20GB, Defined Buttons, Strong Casing, User Friendly, Simple Software

Cons: Poor Headphones

Review: I love my Dell DJ 20GB (2nd Gen) I purchased it aabout two months ago, and have used it every day since. I've had no problems, and have no complaints. I also have the 1st Gen DJ20, which after one year is in poor shape. The Rewind, Play, and F. Forward dont work right. It constantly freezes. The second gen that i have is truly incredible. Eats any iPod for dinner

User Rating: 1/10

HORRIBLE - AWFUL

Pros: Nice silver look

Cons: Clunky interface - Hard time loading songs from Napster

Review: The only reason I own this Dj is the fact that it came free with my Dell Laptop. It is plain awful. Little though when into this product. It was a RUSH to market. An effort to out sell Apple. Unless you get this free with one of Dell's offer, you are much better off with Apples Ipod.

Good Mp3 player but better available with a bit extra $$

Pros: Nice design, Easy to use, Sound good, Different than I-Pod

Cons: USB feature requires software to be installed, software no match for I-tunes

Review: This player is really designed for those looking for the bare minimum. It plays good sound, but otherwise has nothing else besides its shiny silver buttons. the scroller is cool, and i find it to be more comfortable than the I-pods O. But one thing that really bothered me is that u cannot use it as a USB mass storage device without installing the software to each cpu. I dont want to carry a cd everyhwere i go!? While working out i experienced a few "auto-shutdowns" even with the idle shutdown feature off. Pretty annoying. If your looking for a simple, more compact device, i would hit up the sony's new NW-HD5, its a masterpiece. (And no i do not work with Sony, I wrote this out of all honesty)

Lacks basic features

Pros: Good price point

Cons: No way that you can manage your music

Review: I just bought one of the Dell DJ 20's , an excellent buy for its money.....but don?t go by the price tag, it lacks some of the very basic features and as I understand lacks any kind of software compatibility with music web sites...I am not talking free music but paid music sites being promoted by Dell themselves .....

Think twice before you fall into this trap from Dell......ak1966@hotmail.com

Why can't it just play music?????

Pros: Price, 20GB

Cons: FREEZES UP, won't play

Review: This product will not play!!!
It continuously freezes up, if I had known this before I bought it...I would definately have bought something else.

It pretty much Sux.

Very Good Player

Pros: Blue LCD, simple interface, cheap, good customer service

Cons: heavy, bad headphones

Review: I've had the dell dj for close to 4 months now. I take it running with me and it has never given my any problems. No skipping, no drive errors. I even dropped it from about 4 feet onto concrete, and still no problems. Solid construction. After the new firmware upgrade, it shows up as an external audio device in Windows explorer, and allows to cut and paste. So, it can also double up as a portable storage. It is compatible with Napster to Go and Yahoo!'s music service, which alone makes it much more attractive than the ipod. Battery life, though definitely not 12 hrs, I have tested it for 8.5 hrs with the headphones on and full volume. On the other hand, don't even bother to take the headphones out of the box. They really suck. And inspite of being a bit heavy and bulky than the ipod, the $100+ cheaper price tilts the balance heavily in favor of the dell dj.

absolutely not worth it

Pros: big hard drive

Cons: terrible battery life, freezes all the time

Review: OK. I got one of these for Christmas. That day it broke. There was some firmware problem. I called Dell. They said they had to send me a replacement. The replacement came and I sent the old one back. 4 months later the thing freezes (like always) So i reset it and it has a hardisk problem. I called Dell. I asked for a refund and the person said only Customer Care could authorize a refund but they probably wouldn't because I had had it for more than 21 days. So they're sending me my 3rd replacement. If this one breaks, I am going to sell it on eBay and get an ipod like the rest of the country should get. BOTTOM LINE-Don't waste your money on this hunk of crap!

WAY better than eyepawd

Pros: cheaper, more reliable, better headphones, longer battery life, easier to use than eyepawd, could get it at discount at dell, sound quality great, loud and clear, looks cool, durable, can store computer data

Cons: not as popular as trashy eyepawd

Review: This is way better than eyepawd, the eyepawd sounds distorted and isnt as loud as Dell Dj, the eyepawd is overrated and more expensive. my friend has an eyepawd and he said the ipod sucks now and the headphones riped like nothing. the stupid cirlce thing from i pod was hard to understand and the roll from dj is dark and simple. the dj can hold computer information if you want to take music videos or programs to a friends computer. a must for music fans, dont get the ipod

Great player

Pros: Sounds Great, Looks Great, good price

Cons: Software isn't as good as it should be, headphones are throw aways

Review: I've had the dj for a little over a month now, and I love it. It sounds good, it's small and it can take beating. The Scroll wheel is great, takes some getting used to but great. The headphones are crappy, buy some new phones even before it arrives because there EXTREMLY bad.
It looks great, the back lit buttons add style to the device. The back lit screen is a little dull and should be brighter, other wise the screen is easy read.

The bad, the software with the player is just crappy, just buy dudebox (google it). Also, dell explorer isn't very functional. Music Match is just awful, use real player, Windows Media player or just use Dell Explorer to sync data. My only gripe. I've got nothing gain with this review, so take it to heart.

User Rating: 3/10

Horrible Sound

Pros: Nice controls; good design

Cons: Truly horrible sound quality

Review: My "Cons" sum it all up. This otherwise nice player is completely ruined by poor sound quality. I listened for a few days and always was dissatisfied with the flat sound. I wish I could describe it audiophile terms, but trust me - it's terrible. I confirmed this putting the identical MP3 file on both the Dell DJ30 and my 3-year old Creative Labs Jukebox. I started the song at the same time and switched my headphones from one to the other. The sound of my CL Jukebox was clean and bright; the Dell DJ flat and dull. I will be returning mine immediately to Dell.

But I do like the design layout. I was never a fan of iPod's thumbwheel. The rolling barrel design was better suited to me.

Stick with the I-pod

Pros: Can't think of any

Cons: Friends at work also own DJ's, not a single one of us out of 6 or 7 has had the DJ last thru the warranty period.

Review: Have found Dell DJ to be an unreliable and crash prone device. I use it mostly for airplane travel and occasionally while working out (not running) at the gym. First DJ crashed for good three months in. Second one lasted a month before ear bud socket went bad. Third DJ lasted 15 months (Yea!), but now has fatal "hard disk error". I saved 100 bucks over the I-pod, but it was not worth it. Got the DJ thru a compant type of x-plan program so many at work have them and every one has had quality issues. SHop elsewhere.

I expected a better product from DELL

Pros: 20GB Hard Drive, Cheaper than iPod 20GB, Compatible with multiple music download services

Cons: The Mp3 player would constantly freeze

Review: I was very excited to purchase this product. I have nice size CD collection to
put on the DJ & I was looking forward to having access to my entire library while driving, relaxing, etc.

There was no problem with getting the music onto the player. I like the fact that there are multiple music download services for the Dell DJ.(e.g. MS Media Player 10, Napster) The problem I had was that after 2 weeks of casual use the player would freeze if I hit the rewind button. I had only loaded 5GB of songs onto the 20GB hard drive.

I contacted Dell customer care & they informed me of the reset button located on the bottom of the device. I reset the player & continued use hoping that this would be an isolated incident. I was wrong. The player froze everytime I hit the rewind or fast forward buttons. I call Dell again & they told me to do a system reboot, which would require my entire song library to be erased. I followed the procedure & had to load the complete library onto the DJ again, but the problem persisted. Called Dell again & they sent me a new replacement DJ. THE FIRST TIME I used the replacement DJ it froze. I had to send the 1st DJ back. The replacement is so bad that it freezes immediatly when it turns on. The problems I've personally encountered with this product have been horrific. This is a poor product that in my personal opinion requires a complete overhaul.

I'm in the process of getting the replacement DJ sent back as well. I'd ask for a refund, but when I bought the first DJ I purchased multiple accessorizes as well that I can only use with Dell DJ. I also own a Dell Desktop & Laptop computer that I'm extremely satisfied with. As far as the Dell DJ20, I expected a better product than what I received......twice!!

WAY better than an iPod

Pros: works great, easy to find what you want to listen to

Cons: the headphones suck and the musicsoftware is kinda easy but it takes forever to figure out how it works

Review: My friend just bought an iPod and now I think it sucks!! The Dell DJ works great but the software is really really hard to figure out at first but once you get hte hang of it it is easy. If you are having troble with the software e-mail me at purplemonkey2k5@yahoo.com and I'll tell you what to do.

Good and not overpriced

Pros: price, supported formats, blue light looks nice, easy to use, durable

Cons: battery varies and bar decieving, customer support,

Review: I bought this four months ago because the price was at $215 for an after christmas sale. The Ipod mini from the ipod store was more than that. When I got it, Dell actually shipped a belkin FM Transmiter and a car jack when I didn't even ask for it. I was able to put my downloaded mp3s on it quite easily with the software and converting the cd songs was faster than windows media player. The songs play pretty nice and the earbuds could be better, but I still use them for portability. It's real easy to use and am very happy with it.

What I don't like about this is the Battery bar. It goes from three to one bar in an hour and stays on one bar for about 7 hours of off and on use, sometimes it switches back to two, then it staggars inbetween zero and one and will play two hours on no bars. It's hard to tell how much I have left. Sometimes the battery will last for 8 hours and some for up to 11 hour and my friend that has one said 12 hours. I really haven't used it for that long straight though.
Updated
The hard drive crashed on me so I had to buy a different mp3 player. It was highly outdated anyways. Go with a zen, iriver, toshiba, SanDisk, or iaudio instead, expecially if this is used or referbrished.

Ok, i expected better

Pros: Not much to it

Cons: Nice looking, but poorly built

Review: I think the Dell DJ is a nice choice, but its very poorly designed, and it doesnt have much to it. My friend got one about 1 month ago and he says its not the greatest thing. If your totally desperate for an mp3 player, this might be a good choice, but if your patient....keep looking

Hard drive sucks

Pros: simple to use, blue LCD, main menu button is useful, customer service rocks

Cons: headphone jack faulty, 24 pin connector gets stuck and wont come out, hard drive errors all the time, skips songs during sync, won't accept some songs from its own musicmatch software, many more.

Review: This mp3 player sucks. I went through four of them and finally gave it away and got an ipod which works fine. another thing is that its musicmatch takes forever to download, it misses songs, and they have barely any non-mainstream albums. Also, THE BATTERY IS NOT 12 HOURS. its more like 5. sound quality sucks. Come on Dell. The generation 1 was better.

A great core mp3 player, sticks to the basics

Pros: Good sound, sexy backlight, solid feel, cheap

Cons: Not for feature buffs, scrollwheel makes controls rough

Review: When I'm looking to buy an MP3 player, I'm not looking for an FM Tuner, Voice Recording, or customized menu screens. I'm looking for a device that plays MP3 and WAV files. And this little guy was the answer I was looking for. Sure it may not look as sexy as the iPod, the backlight is a deep ocean blue that gives it a nice look (the light outlines the buttons). And its $50 cheaper then the 4th gen iPod. Again, I wasn't looking to be in the in-crowd with those cheap white iPod earphones. Also, this player is heavier than the iPod which I like because it feels more durable and solid. Everyone says there sick of all these iPod wannabies. Since when are all MP3 players in the iPods shadow? The iPod is an excellent device, but their are millions of choices out there, and the Dell DJ-20 is a good one.

Very Buggy

Pros: Solidly built

Cons: Odd controls, player buggy in general

Review: I had my Dell for less than a week when it had either a screen failure or a software failure. The thing wouldn't turn on, dock, or charge, let alone play music. Dell promptly shipped me a new one, which also frequently locks up or won't turn off. This is also not the player to use if you plan on moving around at all, as any movement like jogging causes it to skip (???).

Better than Ipod and creative!!!

Pros: A great all around mp3 player

Cons: A great all around mp3 player

Review: Dell has come up with a great low cost relible mp3 player. It gives you more bang for your buck than Ipod or creative. The service and support is outstanding unlike the Ipod. I do recomend that you get all the warrantys at the highest level. Also you need to get the lether case. It is $18 but worthit. Dell has impresed me. It is better than Ipod. The backlight impresed me also. It has a perfect blue light. It also has a backlight for the power button that always is on so if you go through a tunnel you can always see it. Do not get the music mach plus. It is a waste of money. It is built like a rock! The creative always fell to pices when you droped it not the dell! Buy the dell 20gb or 30gb and I am shure that you will be happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good looking solid feel, decent mp3

Pros: Silver finish is quite rugged and good looking

Cons: Heavier than IPOD, battery costs $99 to replace

Review: OK, you can easily find out from other reviews that its a convenient alternative to IPOD. But let's take a pause.
Let me begin by saying, I like the Dell DJ very much, but I also believe almost everyone believes Ipod is slightly better.

Reasons:
1) Everyone agrees, that Dell DJ provides carppy headphones, and assuming that you are convinced that apart from that, Ipod and Dell DJ are equals, then you still need to spend $50 to upgrade to Ipod quality headphones..Well i got news for you. The list price of Ipod 20 GB is $299, and list price of Dell DJ 20GB is $249. Only $50 difference.
2)If I were you, and was debating over weather to buy Dell DJ or Ipod, I think point one makes your decision much easier. Go with Ipod, as that $50 difference is worth paying, and i will tell you why next.
3) Ipod is lighter than Dell. I am not a college student. Now we are getting closer to the summer. I travel by train, and I prefer to put my Dell DJ in my shirt pocket. I think if it was an Ipod, those 2 ounces would make a difference.
4) I believe Dell DJ in iteself is a beautiful piece of work, but Ipod is more handsome then Dell DJ. Ipod has sex appeal.

OK, so now we have established, Dell DJ is really a cool thing, but Ipod is slightly superior, unless Dell Drops the price by another $50.

At this point, if you really don't care about 2 years from now what will happen, I suggest go with Ipod. I think that means, if you have enough money to replace the battery of Dell ($99 replacement cost), or Ipod ($99 replacement cost), then you are okay. Or if you have enough means that you can upgrade to the latest Ipod or Dell available at that time, then again you are okay.
As for me, I am not sure yet how I would feel about dropping another $100 after 2 years. I am more pissed, because I couldn't find this information anywhere on Dell's website when I was purchasing the unit. That's why I feel, what a rip-off!

So I think, if the above does bother you, then don't consider buying either Dell or Ipod. Because you might find that Creative Zen, or IRiver could possibly be far better choices. Altough, beaware, Creative Zen is heavier than both DELL DJ and Ipod. I think before buying Ipod, Dell or Creative, one should definitely keep the above points in mind. Apart from the fact that Ipod does not support WMA, and Creative has an awesome battery life. I hope I have provided decent amount of information based on my experience, so you could make the right decision. Good news is, there is plenty of choice out there.
Updated
Recently, Dell's customer service has deterioriated. I have heard that Ipod's customer service is better. That may be one more reason to go with Ipod.

Good player, bad software

Pros: Lots of space. Simple operation.

Cons: Hard to move the selector wheel precisely while working out. Unwieldy for strapping on.

Review: I love my Dell DJ-20. It allows me to take all my music wherever I want to go. The support staff are exceptionally helpful though I bought through the Small Business division of Dell. I can't emphasize enough how abominable MusicMatch (provided) and MusicMatch Plus (available for $20)is. It fails to synchronize some tracks, reporting only that errors occured, but not on which tracks or why. It places certain tracks in all playlists. It creates multiple tracks and the duplicate track finder doesn't find them. I eventually gave up and started using Windows Media Player. So far, so good.

Wonderful player!

Pros: WMA, WAV, MP3 support. Compatable with playsforsure and Napster To Go, small and light, affordable, looks awesome

Cons: lack of 3rd party support,

Review: Just bought the 2nd generation Dell DJ and I am impressed. Right away I noticed how small it is, With the thickness and width identical to a deck of playing cards, the DJ is 1.5 cm longer than the deck. The backlit buttons and screen are fantastic, they look great in the dark.

Navigation is simple and easy, and the scroll barrel makes searching for songs simple.

I use Windows Media Player so the ipod was out of the question because the ipod does not play .WMA files and I was not prepared to sacrifice audio quality to convert them to Apple's .ACC format. Transfer was quick and easy through Window's Media Player's "sync" function. The DJ also shows up in "my computer" as a portable hard drive, and can be used with Napster's subscription program.

Sound quality is excellent, even with Dell's poor earbuds they include, I suggest buying a premium pair of headphones.

The DJ feels solid in your hand and is easily pocketable.

The best part of the DJ is the cost, I bought a 30 gig player with 2 year warranty, plus a dock and a case for less than the cost of a 20 gig ipod with nothing included.

The Dell DJ is an excellent alternative to the ipod and is superior in many ways.

Nice simple player

Pros: Easy to use, good price.

Cons: Horrible headphones, dells tech support sucks, not as sexy as an ipod

Review: The Dell DJ 20 is easy to use. Its a great player if all you want to do is hear your music. Once you get the DJ be prepared to buy new buds because the ones included are pure garbage. My equalizer stopped working right, and now i cant get a hold of dell tech support. An ipod mini 4gb is cheaper and much better so if you are able to get one definatly get an ipod. I am selling my dj to upgrade to an ipod.

Great Basic Business MP3 Player

Pros: Easy To Use, Great Battery Life, Solid And Quality Built

Cons: Screen Could Be Brighter

Review: This is a great, classy looking, business-men's MP3 player. It does what MP3 players are supposed to do...play MP3's!!!!

The roller barrel control is easier to use than the Ipod in my opinion and the controls are extremely intuitive and easy to use.

The interface is very much like the Creative Zen Micro (did Creative build this product for Dell?) and as I said before, it does what it is supposed to do...play MP3's.

Many other MP3 players have all kinds of other features like a calendar, voice recorder, etc., but I wanted an MP3 player, not an all-in-one Convergence Device. Thumbs up to Dell for building a solid, intuitive, quality MP3 player.

not a bad product

Pros: definatly a good batery life and small

Cons: not touch sensitive little bigger than ipod

Review: still not a match for the mighty ipod which i love dell has got some wrk to do but a good product

The thing works.

Pros: It works -- Price is fairly good

Cons: It only works -- lack of features...poor compatiblity...not very good user interface

Review: Its a good player but doesn't have the umph of some other players. User interface is fairly tortured, but better than most other MP3 players. In terms of software on the MP3 player...their arn't many featuers like games, calendar, etc. Sound quality is not good...not bad. The computer software that with the dell dj to the computer is not satisfactory. This isn't worth my money. I would recomend either the iPod or Creative...Rio audio sells mostly junk... and supprisingly with Sony's reputation, their MP3 products are not very good.

Great Product the whips ipod

Pros: Easy to use, smaller then older version, holds (stated by dell) 9,900 mp3 songs

Cons: battery life is a little short compare to the previous version

Review: This is a great mp3 player. Compared to an ipod it has the same battery life and close to double the storage. It has no reals "bells and wistles" but the ipod doesnt eitherAn it costs $50 less than a 20gb ipod. if you want a quality mp3 player, get this.

Works perfect, - once you figure it all out.

Pros: Great sound quality, fast downloads from computer to the MP3 player.

Cons: horribly inadequate instructions. Product descriptions are inadequate on accessories, upgraded head phones are a MUST -.The standard earbuds are worthless since they fall out easy and sound is poor.

Review: The sound quality is great. The computer DELL JUKEBOX MUSICMATHC software orgainizes and converts and transfers files FAST and the DJ20 works perfect for playing all the music and playlists on your computer on your home stereo without having to burn CD's. Note: conntecting to home stereo requires purchase of cradle $27 and special wire for RAC calbe hookup at $17. Dell shipped the wrong parts twice for me so be ware.

The one real problem is understanding how to manuever the musicmatch software. The tutorials are worthless so plan on spending lots of time getting instructions over the phone. Once you get it figured out, it is easy and works great.

Great Value.

Easy and effective

Pros: Great price, nothing fancy, simple to operate

Cons: Some minor flaws with provided Musicmatch, fair earphones

Review: A great little device for the money. Cheaper than the 20G I-pod. I did not need the fancy/overpriced accessories that I-pod offers. I just wanted something to play mp3s and other formats without the bells and whistles and the DJ20 gets it done.

Transfers to the DJ20 are fast. I experienced problems with Musicmatch while converting tagged CD songs to MP3... the program would crash after 2-3 tracks.

The earphones could be better. I simply use my other headphones for better sound.

Navigating the menu is easy. The battery charges up quickly and claims to be good for about up to 10 hours.

I have owned it for about a week already and am very happy with it. No problems with the DJ20. I sort of wish there was a way to replace the battery myself, when that day comes.

If you are looking for a mp3 player, you may want to consider looking at the DJ20. Recommended!

Dell delivers quality and affordablity

Pros: Dell just released a 30gig DJ for $299. So, for the same price as an iPod (cheaper, really, since Dell's stuff is frequently on sale) you get 50% more space. No contest.

Pros: Cheaper than Ipod, great costumer service, musicmatch 9.0 is a great program, easy to use, light-weight, small, bright LED. Great buy.

Cons: The stamp that says 20 GB on the back begin to wear off after a couple weeks of being tossed around in my pocket.

I got one last week...

Pros: ...and I couldn't be happier. Easy to get working with PC, transfer music, and integrate with MusicMatch or Media Player. Does everything I need without all the extra nonsense fluff features like Address book and stuff that I'll never use. Accessories

Cons: Lack of some accessories, no Firewire connection, long lists of albums/artists take awhile to scroll though

Pros: Same great user interface and features. Now much lighter and smaller. Its shorter than the iPod, just as wide, and only 0.17in thicker. All this for $249 plus an FM tuner and voice recorder via the wired remote accessory ($49). Also now has a dock. Oh yea

Pros: Battery life and WAV support . . . but this is the top end at 20 gigs. . . I'll keep my 40gig ipod for the same price.

Cons: Memory goes how high? Slow file transfers and the interface just seems like a clunky bad rip of the ipod. Have those people in India work a little harder on their R&D okay.

Pros: This is a great value for 15 or 20 Gigs. The controls are easy to navigate and easy to learn. Great software. Upgrade to premium software to take advantage of automatic "super tagging."

Cons: Its too big and bulky compared to other similaMP3 players. If you intend on using it for working out or sports use, I don't reccommend this product. If you intend on only using it casually and don't mind the size, then its a good product.

Pros: Its smaller, interface is very similar to iPod. It's a tad less ugly than version 1, supports WMA. We'll judge value when we see the price. I imagine Dell will sell this thing below cost, (or should if they are smart) just to gain some ground in the Apple

Cons: Dell's support and quality have really taken a nose dive. The warranty is fine, but do you like blowing 40 min on the phone with tech support to prove you have an issue? I am no longer using them in my facility. I cannot imagine this thing is "well built"
