    "Great Improvements!" on by MTCC

Pros: Click Wheel, Battery Life, Menu

    Cons: Price, earphones

Summary: I love this player. I don't know why they stopped selling it. Probably to push the iPod Photo series.
The new longer life battery is great. The display is clear. The user interface is simple and fast.
The things that bother me are: The earphones, they are tinny sounding, very low bass quality. The price is a bit high, but I guess it doesnt matter since they arent selling it anymore. The docking cradle is nice, but if you use any of the sleeves or cases, you have to take it out to use it.
The other "problem" with ipods is that you have to use third party software to rip music from the iPod. I would like to be able to rip music back to my iBook when i choose to without the hassle of using other software. the remote, you can't buy one without purchasing them along with those horrible earphones. Not what i really wanted, two sets of them. The remote controller was $40 with the earphones, perhaps it could be $20 without them.

"Incompatible with Windows XP SP2" on

Pros: Nicely packaged, good feature set, good audio

Cons: Total disaster with Windows XP SP2 and USB 2.0. Is not recognized by iTunes. IPOD Setup and iTunes installation trashed two of my computers, I had to reinstall Windows from scratch.

"Junk for the active user" on by imangela

    Pros: Nice help desk staff

Cons: I run and it freezes mid song within 10-15 minutes. Totally useless to me. My $75 Sony Walkman mini cd player is way better!!!

Summary: The iPod is advertised a something to dance with, they even had an report on their web site "take the iPod for a jog". If you work out for more than 15 minutes or drive on bumpy roads it will freeze on you. I worked with the help desk for 4 months until they finally told me "oh yeah it will do that". NICE! If I had known that within the first 30 days I would have returned it. Took a report to the BBB to get resolution. If you want something to lounge around with... great product, you want something to be active with, don't waste your money. Loading my entire music collection is useless if I can't use it.

"Can't Imagine Life without my Ipod!" on by twobshoes70

Pros: all songs at your fingertips, tons of room, reliable

Cons: Models now come with color screen

Summary: I got my IPOD 40gb about 3 years ago when HP did their promotion with Apple and I have to say I LOVE MY IPOD! I can't imagine life without having all my songs at my fingertips. I've used my ipod with Belkin transmitter and also tape deck adapter - both have worked seamlessly. Battery power lasts - easy to upload songs using Itunes, Realplayer, musicmatch and RedChair Software. Down sides - Itunes doesn't look up tags on individual songs, only full cd's (annoying that I have to open up my MusicMatch application to tag the songs, then use Itunes to upload). Only other drawback is the song volume - it's too low. I use MP3Gain to up the volume so that I don't have to blare the speakers in my car or use the battery power to run the ipod louder. Have gotten many applications on IPod Lounge that save me on everything from backing up the ipod to making my books on cd into chapters w/memory (like audible books, you can use bookmarker to achieve the same).

Overall, I don't forsee myself getting a new Ipod until this one dies (40gb is great size for me. I have more than 4500 songs and still have more than 10gb still available). But as soon as this one dies, I guarantee I will get another one!!!

"AHHH! What the hell?!" on by dreamingtree86

Pros: great quality music (when you can get it)

Cons: The harddrive completely fries anywhere within 1 to 6 months.

Summary: I bought this iPod immediately when I heard that the model was being discontinued. I have an idea why and think Apple knows too. I have had two 40gb iPod's within the last six months. The first harddrive died within 5 months, the second that I was given by the "genius" at the apple store crapped out after one month. I DO NOT manhandle this device which I know is very delicate. I just want to know if I am alone in this or if there are many 40gb owners who have constant problems with theirs as well? If you are like me, please send an email to Apple telling them that you are as disappointed and angry as I am.
