"it works great for the Practical and everyday human - yes I own one"
Pros: Slick and sturdy, with gapless playback & good battery life.
Cons: no EQ available, and scratches easily. I also wish it had a power adapter
Summary: Ok so this isn't exactly one of those rediculous PMP's yet. But The iPod isn't about what's on the paper. It can't record voice or tv or anything like that. It can't play full movies comfortably on it's 2.5 inch screen. It also can't make you a pot of coffee or tuck you into bed at night. So what?
If you want to put some music videos or short commedy clips to share a laugh with friends on it, or throw some pictures so you can show how you broke you arm in a crash, then this works great. It's original design, remember, is music. not a full computer replacement.
The 80GB is big, and not many people I know have enough time to fill that, let alone listen to 80 GB of music or movies. It's small in size, making it easier than a brick to take around. Controls are always great, and no cumbersome buttons are around to find. It's a uniform machine.
Gapless playback it wonderful. It's smooth and crates a wonderful listening experience, especially with Pink Floyd's The Wall. 20 hours of battery life is just fine, as I can charge it up almost every night, after maybe 5 hours of listening a day, 6 hours tops. I'll get a power adapter so I can charge it on the road. No personal EQ, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean that the music sounds bad. It still is crisp and clean.
Video is good, but remember, it's not made for long movies yet. I got a portable DVD player that is 10 inches, and is much better than a little 4 inch screen on a PMP. And dealing with DVD copywrights and all are a pain, so keeping it simple here is what it's all about. And who takes bunches of cords around with them for recording a tv show???
They have iTunes, which helps the artists make a deserving profit off of what they make for everyone, everyday. Pirating is a problem, and apple has helped the industry a lot. That may seem bad, but music is what I use everyday, and have no problem paying a few bucks for it.
I used to HATE iPod as many still do, but after going through iRiver, iAudio (which I still like), archos, samsung, and creative, iPod seems to just work.

Most people who say that that the iPod doesn't work basically throw it around(not to mention run over it with the car), and they expect it to still work! Is it just me, or is that stupid? For those of you who are reading this, if you take good care of your iPod, it will work just fine.

I received my Ipod as a gift in Aug '06 I had spent days, literally days loading my music, converted DVD's into MP4's and arranged playlists. When I played it, I thought it was the Cat's Pajamas. This was the next best thing to sliced bread. I originally loved it. I travel worldwide for my job and am away from home at least two or three months at a time. This Ipod was expensive and it cost more than my first car I bought in high school. I don't believe that well made products justify the purchase of a warranty but my Wife did at Best Buy. This Ipod has been my daily companion everyday. I have bought an additional $200 worth of accesories for it and within four months of having it, it craps out on me. The only time I can use it is in the car with the charger. The Ipod isn't responding to input commands and is locking up everytime I use it outside of a car adapter. Now I have to wait until early January to return it to the retailer. They said they would replace it if I had all the items. Oh...I forgot the mention the $5 pieces of crap earbuds it comes with that you may as well throw in the trash anyway because mine crapped out on me in two weeks. I said to myself that as long as the Ipod works, I'm good to go. Now I gotta hump this expensive paper weight and all the accesories for the next month before I attempt to get it replaced. If I received a Zen, it doesn't cost as much, the accesories are cheaper and it craps out too but my Wife wouldn't have to shell out nearly $400 for it and what gives with the wax glass shell on it. I have never seen glass scratch so easily. Did they contract someone special to make glass like that? Thank God they don't make eyeglasses. Apple can take a flying leap now. If you build a product right people will come back. If you don't and have a just sell'm and screw'm attitude, I pray that Apple will go out of business. All of us unhappy Apple Ipod users should form another class action lawsuit against these sham artists. If I get it traded in, I'll request a refund and get a Zen instead.

Stvveo, why are PMPs ridiculous? I don't get it....You're willing to carry around an IPOD for your music and a Portable DVD player for your movies??
Why not a small single product that does audio and video and does them both well? True the screen (on the new Archos) is only 4 inches.. So what?? It sits on your lap while you are using it. Do you need a device the size of a dominoes pizza box on your lap to watch a movie or TV show? How bout last nights Prime time TV lineup? Did you watch that on your portable DVD player this morning on the way to work? I did, but I have an Archos. I set it up last night before I left the house to record 3 different shows on 3 different channels. The unit turned on and off all night long recording everything I missed while I was at the gym. When I jumped on the train this morning (1 hour train ride) I had the three shows I missed in my hand. As for DVD copyrights... That is only an issue if you try to output a recorded DVD back out to your TV from the Archos. It doesn't affect you viewing the movie on the 4" LCD screen.
As for the IPOD...It's very limited (my sis just got the new one as a gift) with video and it's a mediocre music player. The fact that Apple has been doing this for over half a decade and there is no real Equalizer is inexcusable.
And also, paying for TV shows on Itunes that you already paid for in your cable bill is also ridiculous. Use your money on an Archos people. It's a superior product.
