"NOT the best HD-Player"
2.5 starson by lionel76Pros: Design (not really)
Cons: Soundquality, Compatibility , iTunes
Summary: The Cnet rating on this player is definitely not fair. The iPod fails to do so many important things (USB-On the go, external harddrive, FM-radio, Micro & LineIn-recording, camera connector "optional", OGG-Playback). It is not as feature-packed as iRiver H340 or iaudio X5. Both competitors sound much better than the iPod. Just look at the ipod-users at ipodlounge.com complaining about the soundquality!
The major drawback of course IS iTunes. It gives you so many restrictions. For instance, you cannot organize your musicfiles on several computers. Very annoying!
And don't forget, this iPod is thicker than the old 4th Gen. 20 GB iPod. This is the price for a better battery life.
So, what's the ipod mania all about?

What you consider important, most iPod owners do not consider important. iPod is for playing audio not recording, hence no line in jack. I have no idea what you mean by USB on the go, but I do know the iPod syncs faster than any other player period. If you are referring to being able to transfer files from one iPod to the other, that is not included because of DRM issues. All of the other features you listed as "important" can be added to the iPod using accessories. I would rather an iPod do what it does best, then to compromise functionality by adding features most people neither want nor need.

Again, I am not sure what you mean by being able to organize your music files on several computers. iTunes has a simple check box to allow you to maintain control over how you want your folders organized.

You may have problems keeping folders on your computer organized, don't blame the iPod for that.

Apple had a 717% percent increase in iPod sales from the year ago quarter. That is what the mania is all about. Hate Apple all you want and don't buy their iPods. It's pretty obvious they don't need your business.
