"Do Not buy the IPOD with the colour screen" on by wobblyhobbitt
Pros: Good quality sound,Attractive design
Cons: Fragile screen, questionable hardware longevity ,Miserable customer service
Summary: The liquid crystal display started 'bleeding' a couple of weeks after I bought a 30GB unit.
Took it to Apple who told me I must have dropped it (I didn't),and they refused to repair it. I am now the not so proud owner of a $300 30Gb external disc drive. Try the Creative ZEN instead - Equivalent music quality/more functionality without the Apple 'attitude' -
"very good product" on by mark0805
Pros: works as advertised, excellent for swapping music and photos
Cons: one very minor one, the shuffle option could be more flexible
Summary: I've been using my iPod photo for over a year. I'm not a music junky or anything like that but with a years use I can say a lot about this product. It works as advertised, it works perfectly with my iTunes and I love being able to store and retrieve photos on it. I love taking it on the road in the car and I love backing up my photos and photoshop files on here (yes it works great at backing up files, supports PSD format, tiffs and jpegs). Apples emphasis on quality hardware and software really paid off here. Only one minor suggestion: give more options under "shuffle", I'd like to be able to shuffle just a dozen select songs sometimes, not a whole libary

"Overpriced Technology for the Audio-Uber Geek" on by mchambers3
Pros: The best MP3/Video player on the market
Cons: $399 for for $99 disk drive is absurd
Summary: If your heart is set on keeping every song you've ever heard, every photo you've ever taken, and a fair number of your favortite video with you at all times, this is the device for you. Apple does a fine job with the device and the software (though I wish the device came with a protective skin).
Get the service agreement.
And please folks. Don't forget to backup what you put on this device onto a durable medium. Inside that white box is a $99 disk drive.
ALL DISK DRIVES WILL BREAK. That's not a guess, it's a fact. It may be soon, it may be years from now -- but that drive will not last forever.
For the less rabid audio-geeks out there, I really suggest looking at the 1Gb Sandisk flash player. It's under $100 and holds 200 to 400 songs (depending on average length) -
"Screens break" on by bmunden
Pros: Good video quality if you can find the converter online, holds 60GB of stuff. Well, 55 in reality.
Cons: Screen broke after two months. Is now useless as a video iPod.
Summary: If you bought an iPod, you have been iConned.
The only way to make these worth the while is to BUY THE PRODUCT REPLACEMENT PLAN so that you can get it replaced when (not if) the new hyper-fragile LCD screen cracks. -
"Overpriced For A Non Serviceable Product" on by VelowayRider
Pros: Software and presentation of information
Cons: Battery not user replaceable. No charger included.
Summary: I have been wanting an iPod for years since using my son's while recovering from surgery. So, I studied all the CNET posts plus some comments in other chat spaces and then went to the Apple store a couple of times. Today, on the verge of maybe giving the iPod a try, I asked the salesperson why Apple is getting some negative reviews regarding battery life. I also asked about why one must send the unit in scrubbed clean of one's playlists and music and videos and photos. She said they send you another unit, probably serviced in one of their repair centers, and then you simply reload all your stuff which ought to be backed up on your computer. I also commented that a product that costs $400 plus tax ought to come with a converter for charging from a wall outlet and ought to have a more user friendly battery replacement capability and not keep me waiting up to two or more weeks. She said they must be doing something right to have sold so many and walked away from me. Well, I must be living on the wrong planet because I am not about to lay out $399 plus tax of $34 plus $30 for a charging unit plus $59 for a warranty for something that has so-so sound and the threat of great inconvenience hanging over my head. I do have much less expensive alternatives to enjoy my music on the go and shall continue to enjoy them.
I am so glad I did not buy an iPod today.
