"So I bought another ipod.....OH boy!"

    by max-9 on September 13, 2005

Pros: Truly the best design physically ...No protruding buttons and toggle switches

Cons: sound quality is bad ,equalizer is a joke .pictures look cheap on display

Summary: The ipod is a really sleek looking device , there is no better designed hard drive player to slide into your pocket. It has no protruding buttons levers ect. It has tons of aftermarket accesories and a fantastic advertising campaign . This is (I mean was ) my second ipod .... my first ipod experience was terrible but I bought this one with an open mind , let the past be the past.
First of all and most important of all is the sound of the ipod .That is the ipods first problem .The volume is low compared to most hard drive players .The preset equalizer is basically useless . Wheres the bass ? All I hear is midrange and highs and if theres bass its distorted. Even $100 flash players kill the ipod in sound quality. The whole idea is that a digital player should sound as close to cd as possible and be compact....well its compact but it sounds cheap.
Forget itunes....its the same as I remember from my first ipod experience ..its just a software program that locks you into the store and limits your ability to actually own the music you pay for.
Picture viewing is a great addition but the pics look bad and small , you would be better off viewing your pictures through your digital cameras lcd , honestly.
Battery life (I didnt keep it long enough to test this ) is less than other hard drive players and non removable battery may bother you.
Alternatives to ipod: Archos sound quality kills ipods ,Archos picture viewing/movie playing recording tons of features but physically bigger and not as polished finish .
cowon iaudio x5l : Amazing sound quality ,extreme volume , 35 hr battery , the best looking player , drag n drop files ,compact and solid.....but it doesnt support any online music services as of yet.

I don't get it..I just got my IPOD, it's awesome I don't understand all the complaints. I specifically bought an IPOD because of ITunes. I resisted using Itunes for a while but everytime quicktime showed up it was there. So I gave in and started using it. WOW! I have used a lot of music player software and all of them make a mess of your library. No software can do a 100% perfect job of managing music because most of the flaws lie in the metadata or the ID3 tags, that ipod and others use to categorize your music. If you've got 3 albums named "Greatest Hits" and they're listed that way in the CDDB database THAT'S NOT Apple's fault. It's the genius who uploaded the info to the database. Secondly, sound quality is largely an issue of funky headphones. Try listening to your IPOD with a pair of Bose QuietComfort 3's and you'll quickly stop the complaints. In-ear phones or earbuds have tiny drivers that are incapable of delivering low frequency bass response like you get from your subwoofer. If you want that kind of bass get a pair of closed earphones. Lastly, nothing is invulnerable to scratch and scuff...nothing. I got the iSkin Evo3 case that completely encases the IPOD including the shuffle wheel. I haven't physically touched my IPOD since I got it. My wife had my name engraved on the back and it's good as new. I can recharge dock do everything and never touch the buttons or screen. As far as importing, the IPOD imports music faster than any player I've seen. It does it so fast I have to double check sometimes. A moderate size cd album takes about 6 seconds!!! There are a few quirks with videos, wmvs, mpg don't work on the IPOD, there are a ton of free utilities on the web, I downloaded a free program that converts in a flash. My next purchase is a dock for remote control access at home to play through my mixer. If you take the time to learn how to use the player, you'll find it's the most efficient and best music player you can buy, I'm ready to buy a Mac now.

I think you gave a good review, I just think what is sad is that some of the reviews are 3s and 4s.. sometimes 1s etc.

Honestly, I agree with all of your points.. but at the end of the day it does it's job fairly well. Playing music on it's spacious 60 gig hardrive.

I hate the sound quality and dumb screen too.. but seriously, It sounds great once you get over the fact that you hear a little "hiss" in the background or if the EQ is cheezy. Actually, the hiss is normal. Not every player seamlessly works together perfectly in this generation. Maybe in the future, but as of today, I think this is what we have to face with unless something better comes along.
