"See my trick to boost the volume and change the eq sound!!!"
Pros: Great for the gym and on the run...It's my backup mp3 player to my cowon iaudio...
Cons: The old headphones were included...all the other new ipods have the new headphones...
Summary: As it lacks bass as all the ipods do here's the tip and then it'll sound tons better...go to your music library...then select all in edit...right click anywhere...choose get info...you'll see a box...drag the volume slider 95% to the right and change the eq setting to hip-hop...select ok...and ok the change for multiple items in the next screen...when your screen turns back to blue...click anywhere...resync your shuffle...and wow!!!...just lower the volume before you replug your headphones in so you can readjust it...and now you have a little powerhouse...I give it an 8 because it came with the old style headphones, but I don't use them anyway...

Since my last comment, I have restored the iPod to factory settings and the EQ seems to be responding again...I still don't know how my music files were affected and can't tell if I need to lower the volume adjustment to a neg, number to get them back to where they were originally. I guess EQ response is enough for now. I had figured this was a harmless "trick" to try but I would figure out how to undo the volume adjustment for yourself before trying this approach.

So I followed the instructions in your post & the sound is VERY distorted now & I cannot change my EQ settings...the sound does not vary at all when I choose anything other than HipHop. When I went back into iTunes to move the slider back to 0, it was already there. Now do I need to slide it to a negative # because it made the increased volume setting the "new zero" setting? Grrr. Now I have crappy sound! Please help!

Most people probably don't know about that feature and would benefit from it...especially those who complain about lack of bass response in their headphones.
