"What happened to actual reviews?"
4.5 starson by wfbnadadorPros: Small, simple, light, great for running
Cons: no dock connector, could have made a sturdier metal usb to headphone adapter rather than a flimsy cable
Summary: I gotta say I love how people review something they've never used. I used the headphone remote for the iPhone for months, very intuitive and did everything this one does, but this one added volume controls. Truth is, for all the complaints, none of these folks whining have ACTUALLY tried the thing. I have, and I love it.
Key points:
-You rarely skip backwards when using an mp3 player (be honest) so the most likely thing you'll do is double click anyway.
-Beyond that you probably just play and pause which is one click away.
-Ten dollar adapter cables are coming out to let you use your old phones, but really, this is an entry level pod, so those with it will probably be just fine with the included set.
-The controls are closer to your face, and easier to find in a run.
-Less seams to collect dirt and grime, sweat and other garbage.
-Support for multiple playlists is very nice, now that we have 4GB to play with.

Clearly you are someone who lacks sweat glands. So congratualtions, this product is perfect for you. For the rest of us, the controls stop working a mile into the run. Replacement headphones from Apple have the same issue, sound goes all the way up and controls stop working.

I have used many different types of headphones, I am always broke but i would still not accept $30 if i had to wear the ipod headphones for a month. As far as exercising, they fall out extremely easily, the speakers blow out (for me normally on the left side), they are sold $30 separately if you ever need to replace them. To have to pay extra money just to not have to use their headphones. And keep in mind you are paying $80 for a 4gb player, that has no features other then the headphones that everyone hates, as soon as they use a pair that is worth the same price.

I just bought one and it sucks, so YES I have used it. What a piece of junk. $60 for a pair of crappy earbuds, is what it amounts to... the rest of the unit might as well be a memory stick. How many people out there still use the terribly uncomfortable earbuds that come standard with media players? 2% of the population? Less? Apple, again, targeting ultra-small, useless markets that pay for anything with the stupid logo on it... JUNK.

The previous generation iPod Shuffle could be controlled so easily by someone with big hands playing it in the dark. One button. Press to play. Press to pause. Click right/eft side to go forward or back, click top/bottom to raise/lower volume. Nothing could be easier. Nice metal case integrates a clip. $49 gives you 10 hours of music. Attach an ordinary 1/8" mini to mini plug to connect to home/car stereo input. Easy USB charger. Comes in great colors including Red (Product) which contributes part of purchase price to combat Aids in Africa at only $49 so when you are considering a tiny postage stamp size MP3 player, the 2nd Gen. iPod Shuffle is a superior device also. (Not this 3rd Gen. isn't a great player also as reviewed by here by 'wfbnadador')

I used it some, it seemed really nice and easy to use...If you will spend the minute necessary to read the instructions

You have some points but the headphone thing is the real problem. When I go to the gym a lot of people have problems keeping those white headphones in place, added the fact that they sound beyond awful. I haven't tried it, but I think the design is extremely stylish; still, no buttons on face (I do skip tracks, and a lot), having to pay more for an adapter (there's no pricing yet and considering Apple charges more than $10 for a sync cable it's very unlikely they'll sell these for $10) it takes a lot of the appeal. I'm glad you like your purchase but what you like about it is what a lot of us dislike.

I agree, its not about the screen. Sure, if I sat on my sofa an listened to music other ipods would be fine. I can afford the bigger ones, its just that i do janitorial work where i run floor machines. Its tough to keep pulling the ipod out of my pocket to change songs. Bottom line, the sandisk is cheaper and it has a screen, but the added price on the apple pays for the voice navigation, which sandisk does not have.

I agree (somewhat); for workouts the Shuffle is pretty much all one needs. That said, it should be pointed out that most Shuffle users DON'T buy their little players with the expressed intent of using them down at the gym. The Shuffle is the introductory unit into the iPod world. Kids get Shuffles. People on the cheap get Shuffles. It's not just iPhone users who want a stripped down supplement to bring along on their 10k run.
Believe it or not, a screen is a useful thing...I even suspect that there might be a runner or two who could actually agree with that. But that's not really the point to the Shuffle. It's always been a simple-to-use, easier to obtain device that gets people into the iPod/iTunes/iTMS culture.
To the POINT of this redesign ('sides getting a "fresh" iPod to market): I don't see how DIFFICULT it was to operate the 2G Shuffle while running; the thing clips ANYWHERE and its buttons are a BREEZE to use. So what's the question AAPL was trying to answer w/ this 3G unit? -
i honestly don't see a need for a screen or a nav when all i use the thing for is running and working out. if I already have an iPhone that takes care of both my phone and pod needs, this thing is a great solution for a runner, and I know after years of running I don't stop to play with the nav or watch the pretty pictures.
