"Good device for audiobooks"
Pros: Impressive construction, aluminum body, not cheap plastic
Cons: Menus/Navigation could be better designed
Summary: Excellent MP3 player for listening to audio books - primary reason for purchasing. Extremely simple to download from public library and put onto the Archos player. For audio books, device must be Janus compliant and this one is (accepts expiring files that deactivate/expire after X days). Also has bookmarking so that during playback you hit 'set bookmark', switch to music or another book, etc., and then when you go back to the book it prompts to see if you want to resume at the set bookmark. Great feature. Also supports really big single files, unlike some well-known MP3 players. Average book size is 140 MB so this can hold more books than you can listen to. Impressed with device quality, would like to see some better menus, such as "Repeat" for my 11-year-old daughter's favorite song, over and over...Overall, happy with device performance.
Updated on Dec 28, 200812/28/08 - If you're looking for a device to play eAudiobooks, look elsewhere for a device. After about 20 books the device stopped sync'ing the DRM audiobook files. Unable to resolve and Archos tech support was not helpful, although they did exchange the unit. New unit worked fine for several months then also failed to sync. Firmware is current and using Windows Media Player 11 as all sites recommend and using the same procedures - nothing different, WMP 11 just stops sync'ing.
As far as Archos, their Contact Support link is not active. Phone number? Heck no. FAQ's that address this? Another 'no'.
