"On my second D2 and love it"

by kylenyc on August 8, 2009

    Pros: Great sound quality
    SD Memory Card Slot
Directly jump or bookmark any point in a music/video
    Great battery life
Easy-to-use touch screen LCD plus tactile buttons
Won't mention features I don't use (see cowon website)

    Cons: Typical cheap headphones
    Cracked LCD makes it unusable
Doesn't make a good Brooklyn style pizza

Summary: After looking at the CNET reviews for MP3 and personal media players, I decided on another D2 to replace my broken 2 year old D2. While sturdy, D2's aren't indestructible (and I bought a protective case this time around... my duh).

The D2 has excellent sound quality and I have mine paired with Sennheiser CX-300's in-ear-headphones ($30). There are equalizer presets (Voice, Rock, etc) that you can edit, and audio enhancements such as BBE, bass boost, surround and stereo that I find useful when switching from different types of music, audio books and podcasts. I particularly like being able to easily touch the progress bar and jump forward or back to a precise point anywhere in a track during playback (especially to repeat something I miss while listening to a book or podcast) without having to go all the way to the beginning or fast forward scanning). Plus I can bookmark for later.

Some may find the D2 "large" or "thick" but I find it has a nice weight and fits perfectly in the hand, and with the size comes the excellent battery life (@ 50 hrs audio), the convenience of an SD memory card slot, touch screen LCD, three tactile/push buttons, and power/hold switch. I find it easy to use when tucked in my pocket despite having a touch screen because it has three tactile/push buttons that you can edit. For example you can change the three buttons from BackTrack/Pause/ForwardTrack or VolumeDown/Pause/VolumeUp. I find it easy to pause and change volume with the buttons while using the touch screen for skipping tracks all while the D2 is in my pocket.

I'm long past the novelty of playing XviD/DivX videos and the tech saavy can find free games to play on the built-in Flash Player, but it's nice to have these features for long plane rides and commutes.

Overall, the Cowon D2, while dated, is still a versatile personal media player with excellent sound quality and many features.

P.S. Hooking it up to my stereo using a 3.5mm to RCA cable ($10 not included), I can blast my stereo and the sounds just fantastic.
