    "Looks and Sounds Great but.."

by backmind on May 19, 2006

Pros: Awsome sound, Good style & Cool looks

Cons: The interface was a tragedy, firmware will help

Summary: I'm here in Korea and I've had my i6(iAudio 6) for about 3 months now.

Well, the cost wasn't that attractive compared to other mp3ps (nano or iriver's u10) here in Korea, but I just fell for the size and its looks, and for now, IĄŻd say that IĄŻm quite satisfied.

    The Pros
    - The size is ok; I mean itĄŻs neither too small nor big. The thickness might bother some nano lovers but it gives i6 a solid look. And compared to the nano, i6 doesnĄŻt get easily scratched and is pretty safe for pocket carrying.
Personally I like the black color with steel frame. ItĄŻs pretty cool and fits well with my suites.
    - Sounds; really satisfied by the BBE system and its powerful bass, I think itĄŻs the best part of CowonĄŻs mp3ps.

    And Cons
Since I bought mine the next day it came out, there were terrible bugs in it and the interface was a mess. Sometimes I just canĄŻt understand Korean companies using the Korean market as a testbed; I have to say at first I was bit disappointed.
(After I got the firmware upgrade it got better butĄŚ)

    - The touch pad interface was, and still is a bit too sensitive. it takes some time to learn how to use it and will need more time more time to properly use it. You shouldnĄŻt expect the performance the ipod gives you and youĄŻll maybe always have to have it on hold to avoid mistakable moves. (I usually experience this CD flicking sound and find out it occurs because the section-repeat button was pressed by itself.)
And sometimes the touchpad wonĄŻt work at all, which has been mostly fixed after the major firmware upgrade, but will still occur just when your about to forget about it.

    - The memory device is a 4GB 0.85 inch HDD from Toshiba, and after you search and press play, it has some buffering time. Guess itĄŻs because it a hard drive type and since my last mp3p was a flash memory type 512mb, I think simple comparing isnĄŻt right.

I believe when the i6 is out in the states, most of the problems will be solved and it will be an enjoyable experience for the people interested in it. For me, its been about a month since I got the firmware 1.2 version, and I believe it fixed ĄŽmostĄŻ of the bugs I found.

iaudio 6 has good style, lovely design, and great sound. And I believe this can cover up some most of the unpleasant experience I had with it. Even with the big fuss I had, IĄŻll recommend it as a good buy.
