Lots of problems

Pros: Small design

Cons: Problems with hardware and software

Review: I have had this mp3 player for about a year. I have had to send it in for repair twice already because it wouldn't download mp3's and couldn't be detected the first time. The second time it had no power one day. Now I am contacting tech support for a 3rd time because it is making a high pitched whining sound while playing mp3's. There is no phone number to contact the company cowon.

Much more than expected.

Pros: Small size, Large features, Great sound, Nice software

Cons: Takes some time to learn

Review: This is a very pleasing product. The small size is perfect for excersise. The price has dropped quite a bit and the memory is now larger. The features on this player are like a custom car. Too numerous to list. And oh yeah, it sounds great.

1+years, 1 problem, excellent purchase

Pros: storage, navigation, software, weight, look, features, battery life

Cons: accesories...

Review: I've had this little mp3 player for over a year now, and the only problem I had was quickly fixed by the customer support.

I live in L.A., and the radio quality is great. Tried the mic. recording feature and it works fine, you have to be careful not to speak to close to the mic, but that's about it. The quality of the recording is pretty good.

I have the 1gb model, enough for 150+ songs, about 10-12 hour playtime, and easy intuitive controls.

The player looks great, I dare say it looks like a tiny iphone...

Ok, now the bad things:

I had a problem last year with the player itself, something about the firmware... I tried fixing the problem myself, but soon found out I had no idea what i was doing. So, I mailed my iaudio to cowon customer support after completing an online summary of the problem. About 10 days later they sent it back, working perfectly. Problem solved.

The other thing i didn't like where the earphones..., but you can just buy a pair afterwards, so never mind that.

Overall I think this mp3 player would beat other players in the same price range easily. Did I say it has a clean and clear lcd screen? It might look small, but it works perfectly and gives all the info needed.
One last thing (no more I promise), one day i accidentally dropped my player as i was getting in my car and slammed the door on the poor thing... It survived, although with a huge bump (incredibly the thing didn't explode or brake into pieces!), and it still works like nothing happened.

So, in conclusion, if you've read all I had to say about the cowon iaudio u2, then BUY IT ALREADY!

Excellent!

Pros: easy to use, recording, sounds great

Cons: could use a plug-in/wall charger as a standard option

Review: I really can't say anything bad about this player, I am on my 2nd U2 now, gave my 1-gig to my husband and bought a 2-gig for myself. I originally wanted an iPod, but needed an FM tuner. I researched my options for a long time, and finally settled on this one. I absolutely love this player. The only thing I don't particular like is that while it's plug and play with all PCs and Macs, it's more friendly to PCs...deleting files using a Mac sends them to the player's "trash" which still takes up the same space on the player...so you either have to delete from the player itself or use a PC to delete files (easy fix!). Anyway, great little player, and with the right pair of headphones, all of your audio needs will be met. Bonus: FM tuner works pretty well, and it records at your choice of quality, 128 being the highest, so voice quality is terrific.

Great performance, interface & value - still

Pros: Sounds great, easy to use

Cons: Battery life could be better

Review: I've had mine a couple of years now, and with some Shure E3C headphones the combination is hard to beat for sound quality, value, ease of use (both file transfer and actual player use) and durability. (I use mine in some pretty nasty conditions running heavy equipment.) Only complaint is battery life. It seems to only get 6-8 hours before going to "zero bars" on the batt display, but I never actually let it go dead. . .

This mp3 player is a lemon

Pros: Small, FM radio

Cons: Won't turn on, turns off without warning, horrible service

Review: I am a researcher, and I thought long and hard about which mp3 player I should buy for my boyfriend for Christmas. He runs, and he likes listening to the radio AND recorded songs. Given the tiny size, the FM radio and user/CNET's reviews, I bought it from ********** for $89 in December.

The thing has never worked for more than about an hour at a time. It consistently does not turn on, or turns off abruptly despite the fact the battery monitor says it is charged.

I've been trying to work with COWON's customer service department, and it's impossible. You cannot talk to a human being. After I put in a ticket, it took seven days to get an answer: install the new firmware. Great--that would be perfect if I could get the thing to turn on, which it won't. There was no way to reply to the e-mail. I have to put in another ticket.

I can't return this piece of junk to Amazon. They say it's Cowon's gig. I can't use the warranty I bought for 12 months either. Perhaps this is one out of 10,000 lemons, and the rest of the iAudio U2s are great. But I won't buy another thing from this company because of their horrible service.

Cowon USA technical support inexistant

Pros: Excellent sound, ease of use (USB drive)

Cons: Low memory capacity (1GB)

Review: Cowon-iAudio MP3 players have excellent sound quality.
The new iAudio F2 (flash memory 2GB) is the newest model corresponding to the U2. It works well, is easy to use (even though some options are non-intuitive), it starts and stops very quickly (unlike some hard drive-based MP3 players), and the volume (max) is very high (30 mW per side). The batter life is very good (ca. 20h). The price was quite good, too (I got it when it was just released in the US): $120.
One drawback: Cowon USA customer/technical support is INEXISTANT. There is no way to contact anyone or send any questions as we must first register and be approved first. And this procedure (that might take several days) does not work at all. I have finally found a way to contact someone, who proposed to fix the problem but this did not work at all. For 2 weeks now I have pursued my efforts to get registered in order to have the possibility to ask a question (!) (I do not have any problem with my iAudio F2) without success. I cannot reply to the email address that Cowon uses to send me (occasionally) a response as it is an automatic address going nowhere.
To summarize:
- iAudio/Cowon MP3 players are great (at least the F2)
- Cowon USA (iAudio) customer/technical support is INEXISTANT.

Great for working out or inline skating

Pros: Loud, good sound, compact

Cons: Radio reception indoors, menu systems, song grouping

Review: I love this player for working out and blading. I did quite a bit of research, and determined that I wanted a bit more than just iPod style, and am glad I did. The device can hold about 235-40 songs recorded in my favorite 64Kbps WMA format (the quality, in my opinion, is comparable to MP3 @96Kbps). It's very loud, and has quite a few controls for everything from equalization to song speed (useful for when you need a steady pace). Syncing is pretty straightforward, although it can be slow, depending on the other end of the usb cable. Plus, I use one charger for my player, Motorola Razr and work blackberry when I travel now! I did invest in a Nike armband holder for the player, and it fit perfectly. I also have used the device as a thumb drive for presentations, etc. when traveling, instead of carrying a separate one.

A few drawbacks, however. The songs cannot be grouped in playlists per se. They can be loaded in a specific order or can be arranged alphabetically when playing, neither of which was appealing to me, so I do quite a bit of clicking the nub to the right. :) Also, the Radio reception was pretty bad at my old health club (the gym floor was just below street level) in Chicago, and here in Denver, it's even worse (I think I get 5 stations total). But the stations I do get are decent and very clear. Also, maybe I never really got acclimated to the device, but the menu system is a bit cumbersome with the nub and 2 buttons on top, I always seem to be engaging the "Record FM" feature, creating rather large files of garbage that I then have to delete. But this only happens when I am trying to tinker with settings that are rarely used.

I'd buy another one of these, but this one has lasted a long time so far. I think I paid $175 new about a year ago...

Affordable, Ultra Durable, Great Value!!!

Pros: Great styling, Handy carrying case, great for the gym. Excellent voice-recording quality. Flash memory allows you to use it as a pen drive.

Cons: Does not include arm strap with carrying case. 1 GB is not a lot of music. . Does not support WPM

Review: Overall, this is a great product. The voice recording and radio recording feature work great and sound quality is good too. I like most of this product is its size, the size of a pack of gum! However, the keys are big enough to allow for easy navigation thru the menus. It is also very durable. I’ve had mine for over a year and I have had no problems.

Dead After 6 Months + Poor Customer Service

Pros: Price, Size, Ease of Use

Cons: Software Not Great, Tough to Read the Tiny Screen

Review: I was very happy with the U2 until one day it unexpectedly locked up on me. After attempting to reset the device, it decided to no longer power up and is can't be recognized by my computer. I've tried everything I could find on the Cowon site (LOUSY troubleshooting section) and all I could find on random message boards. So, I got an iPod mini to replace it and love it even more. My advice: drop a few extra dollars on the iPod, get the support, service, and quality you'd expect.

Would not recommend this to any friends

Pros: No Software required. Good for running and working out

Cons: Not reliable.

Review: I was moderatly pleased with the U2 for the first 12 months. After that, it would shut off for no reason, and eventually stopped working all together. I spent too much money to recieve a product of this quality.
I won't be purchasing another cowon product any time soon.

CNET got it right this time, though my rating is 9

Pros: size, quality of workmanship, quality of sound, ease of use, style

Cons: small disply, but it is not a "con" (since the device is very small) just a comment

Review: This is a great MP3 in all respects. And it IS easy to connect to a computer and download music. I got 2GB, and don't know what to do with it (its hours of music), so it is plenty for MP3 (too small for a "laptop", but it isn't "laptop").
The only thing I wish that CNET would have pointed out that it comes with carrying case. I did not know and ordered another one and now I got two of those.

Best Flash MP3 Player in its Category

Pros: Small yet tough, Good Design, Easy to Use, FM tuner, Battery Life, Plays everything

Cons: Earbuds maybe, not much else

Review: I got the cowan iAudio U2 (1GB) for my birthday over a year and half ago and what a great gift that was.
At the time I had been looking for a flash MP3 player (that could take a beating) but had some battery life and an FM tuner as well as a good amount of space. This little player has fit the bill perfectly since day one and has been going strong since. I'm even still happy with just the 1GB of space though it's not really the latest and greatest anymore.
And even though I didn't buy it, the price--(like most MP3 players other than the iPod) has always been better than it's iPod competitor. The one place the iPods tend to do better is in design.
However I love the iAudio design, it's really easy to use--small, efficient--brightly lit LED. Even came with a little protective case and neck rope you put it in.
The only drawbacks I've seen in my 12 month+ usage has been the earbuds--they're just typical earbuds really.

Cowon don't care

Pros: Fine till it goes wrong

Cons: Then that's it

Review: I had an M3 which I got at the end of 2004. At the end of 2005 it went wrong. I contacted AdvancedMP3 who I bought it from (always excellent) and they advised that Cowon's returns agent in the UK was Global Office Solutions in Bradford. After some persuasion they accepted that it was down to them to accept it for repair. That was in April. Haven't seen it since. Global are now in the hands of the administrators (KPMG), Cowon don't have phone numbers and won't answer emails. Advanced have tried to help but Cowon don't respond to them either. I've tried, I really have, but Cowon really just don't care. Don't buy one. Things go wrong with everything and the support in the UK really doesn't exist. Rubbish.

Pros: Good Overall Qulaity and Sound

Cons: Navigation not to intuitive. AC adapter would be nice

Review: Customer service from Cowon was very good. After a few months the USB port broke. Cowon responded rapidly to my warranty request. Once received they repaired it very quickly and returned it promptly.
Overall I am quite happy with the player. Battery life is pretty good, but I don't think I ever get 15 hrs.

Like to gamble?

Pros: Nice paperwieght.

Cons: Expensive for a paperwieght.

Review: Read the great reviews on this product and decided to buy one for myself. Picked one up from a local retailer, but when I got it home it wouldn't switch on, wouldn't be recognised by Windows when it was plugged into a USB slot, and wouldn't charge.
"That's OK," I tell myself. "Every manufacturer makes a defective product or two once in awhile." So, I return it to my retailer for a replacement. It's a popular item, it seems, as they are sold out. But I'm patient and am told that they have ordered more and will replace it ASAP.
Cowon takes 3 weeks to supply the shop with just a fraction of their order. Luckily, I get my replacement. Unluckily, an exact duplicate of the previous scenario occurs when I open the package and try to charge/switch on the U2: no power, no display, Windows doesn't recognise. Useless.
Cowon obviously has serious quality control problems that they are either incapable or unwilling to correct. And from what I've read, their customer service is also terrible. It's a shame because I'd really like to at least try one of their products that actually works.
Looks like I'll be splurging for a Nano after all.

don't go by CNET reviews...

Pros: light and small...comes with case and necklace, cool.

Cons: frustrating, no customer support, user guide not helpful

Review: I got this because of the great rating given to it by CNET and other users but I think the customer support issue should be taken into account...what good is it to have a great little devise that, should one have the slightest trouble with, it is impossible to get tech support or customer service for? Its a real disappointment and frustrating and time wasting.

Serious battery problems

Pros: great, if you can get the battery to hold a charge

Cons: LOW battery life!

Review: Not sure how CNET editors got 15 hrs play time out of one charge. I've had mine since end of February and used it for less than 27 hrs. Initially, it would play for 5-6 hrs before requiring a recharge (which takes over an hour). Now, it only plays for 1-2 hrs before having to be recharged. Otherwise, good player--but an MP3 player that isn't playing is a MAJOR drawback!!

best of the best

Pros: It has the best sound quality on the market and one of the easiest interfaces that I have seen. When you add in all of its extras, line-in, FM and more you just can't beet it.

Cons: It dose not come with a wall charger so you have to buy one. Also the voice recorder is only good for 3 feet away.

Review: I have had mine for several years now and have nothing but good things to say about it. If you want a player with top quality sound and extra futures this is it. I recorded the band that I am in by plugging the line-in into the head phone jack on our sound system and when we played it back it sounded just like or better than a studio recording.

I'm Impressed

Pros: Easy navigation button; sensible controls

Cons: Complicated music transfer, ear buds not comfortable

Review: I like my new iAudio U2, however, I was not able transer my music using Windows Media Player. I used the included JetShell Pro software and find it a little complicated, but did manage to get some music installed. I am still searching for a comfortable set of earphones as my ears are small. But the sound from the enclosed earbuds is rich!

Firmware Upgrade Death killing many U2s

Pros: Up until it's untimely death, innumerable

Cons: Poor software engineering

Review: Take time to read the iAudio support forum threads -
http://www.jetaudio.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9
- about dead players. Sadly, mine was among them. While this machine was everything I wanted in a player - size, capacity, ease of use - its early demise negates all of that. This is not the only model suffering from Firmware Upgrade Death, as can be seen in the forums and by doing a search on the model of your choice.

My case: I went to perform a firmware upgrade, following the surprisingly difficult procedures -
http://eng.iaudio.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=C08&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=download&category=9&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=download&desc=asc&no=214&bmenu=download
- to the letter. After the upgrade, the unit will not start, will not be recognized by the computer, nothing, nada, zip. To date, there has been no respose from Cowon on whether the affected machines will ever be able to reboot, short of sending them in for repair or trade.

My rating is based on a product of 10, software engineering of 1.

Cowon has a great product here, but it seems they want to go out of business quickly by killing their customer's machines.

Top notch MP3 player!

Pros: Robust, easy to use with Windows XP; excellent sound

Cons: Radio sensitivity marginal

Review: This little player is phenomenal. Roughly the size of a small pack of gum, it delivers great sound and can hold plenty of music and battery charge for a full day of listening and then some. Very lightweight. I use mine at work while programming, and it is all the player I need. Great for running or working out. Interface is OK, but maybe not quite as cute as the iPod. Small size is great, but it's so small and light that I'm scared that I'm going to lose it!

"Rival's the iRiver T30"

Pros: Has 'the works'; it plays ASF, MP3, WAV, WMA, MPEG 1 Audio, MPEG 2 Audio, MPEG 2.5 Audio; voice recording, line in, FM radio, compact

Cons: Uses lithium polymer built in battery (personal preference), sound quality not as good as other MP3 players I have tried but still quite good

Review: This is by far one of the leading MP3 players in it's category. The iAudio's operating system works in a range of programs, including Apple MacOS 9.x, Apple MacOS X 10.x, Linux 2.2.x or later, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition.

It is very versatile, it has many functions and unlike many MP3 players is firmware upgradeable. It also comes with a neck strap and headphones. The FM radio signal is very strong and you can tune in to your favourite radio stations using this MP3 player.

It is though, a tad bulky in my opinion and it uses a lithium polymer battery that is built in. Although, this is again my personal preference, I prefer an MP3 player that doesn't have a built in battery so you don't have to constantly worry when it will run out.

All in all, this is definetly an MP3 player you will want to look at if you are considering to buy a compact flash player.

Firmware is unstable, menu is not intuitive, customer support is iff-y

Pros: it's good when it works like it is supposed to

Cons: firmware seems to be unstable. Lost bookmarks and play lists and had to reinstall firmware at least 3 times

Review: I DO NOT RECOMMEND A PRODUCT THAT CONSTANTLY CAUSES TROUBLE. IF this product works as is it supposed to - it would be a gem. BUT>>>>> I have had numerous problems. For starters....the menu is not intuitive; and the manual is not helpful. After many frustrating hours, I learned the navigation.

But the biggest problem is that it is not stable. Problem 1: the unit would not stay off. It kept rebooting. Resolution - reinstall firmware. Problem 2: It lost settings including bookmark, playlists and play mode. Resolution - reinstall firmware.

The customer support is on-again-off-again. Several times they responded immediately and were right on. Other times, I never got an answer and had to keep writing.

A quality MP3 player

Pros: Battery, Navigation, Sound, Size, Mic

Cons: might crash after few months use - but new firmware fixes this!!

Review: In all honesty i didn't want to view pictures, or have a colour screen, or to view documents, games, calender etc... Basically any extra gimmicks that will lower battery life.

I just wanted something that is good at playing audio that supported more than just mp3 (ogg/wma!! etc), can enhance it and have good bass settings which go well with good headphones!! with a good battery life(at least 10 hours use), and light as matchstick box.

I got the iAudio2 512mb version and it supports a wide range of codecs(firmware upgrades) and has a mic - which has suprised me quite a bit as i used it at conferences etc and it was pretty clear. FM radio is an ok addition but i don't use it much. Also a LineIN for recording from cd to player. In terms of navigation... i can control it with my eyes shut.

My only advise is upgrade to latest firmware. It kills a few bugs, it just makes device quicker to navigate.

Have a look at it, because 1gb prices are falling as we speak.

Great playback and voice recording quality for such a little package

Pros: Audio rendering is excellent, voice recording quality a pleasant surprise, decent navigation once you get used to it

Cons: Shaky FM reception, but who really buys for that. Supplied ear buds typically unpleasant.

Review: I'm very pleased with the purchase. Quality where it counts in a very small package. I found the onboard audio playback tweeker, "Jet Effect" to provide some pleasant enhancements. While I wasn't expecting much regarding voice recording quality from the reviews, I was pleasantly surprised after setting mic volume to high and sampling rate to 128 kbps. Replaced the supplied ear buds with Shures, and it's an all around satisfying package.

Good, but disappointing

Pros: Small, lots of features

Cons: no playlist support, poor battery, bad tag support

Review: I'm relatively happy with this product, but it is lacking in many ways. This thing is packed with features like speeding up and slowing down the playback speed of songs, etc..etc..
They seem to have left out the most important features though. I assumed it had playlist support because of its endless list of features, NOT SO. you have to click on each song and click on it and select to add it to list. Basically you can only make "dynamic playlists" using the mp3 player itself. So to make a 100 list song all from different folders would be the biggest pain in the world with this player. I would not buy this if I did it again.

Beautiful design, excellent sound, feature-packed.

Pros: Small size, long battery life, large storage, great sound, many features

Cons: Long boot-time, only holds 53 folders, EQ/volume settings difficult to work sometimes

Review: I must say that I am extremely happy with my iAudio U2 2gb model (I know this is the 1gb model on Cnet, but there's no listing for the 2gb). The sealed Lithium polymer battery charges from any USB port in about 2 hours, even with the computer off (on my PC anyway, not my laptop). Although I haven't timed it, I get a good 15+ hours on one charge. The FM radio has great reception and stores more than enough preset stations for the LA area. The "sleep off" timer and wake timer functions are great for dozing off or waking up to your favorite tunes. I have recorded from FM radio and with the built-in condenser mic and found both functions acceptable. The ability to change the recording formats (mp3, wav) and sampling rates for both is a nice touch (I think this feature came with the latest firmware).

Cowon's website is easy to navigate and lists current firmware for my U2 and any new versions of the JetAudio software. I don't use JetAudio (iTunes works fine) but I have created my own personalized boot-up moving logo with JetLogo, which is another nice touch. Windows XP quickly recognizes the U2 as a removable storage drive when plugged into a USB port, and files (any files) can easily be transferred or reorganized through Windows Explorer. You can't delete folders or move songs while not connected to a computer (the U2 interface only deletes one song at time), so you have to organize/manage everything in Windows before you remove the USB connection. The U2 won't play when plugged into an actual computer USB port (it only charges and acts like a removable disk drive when there's a digital signal present), but it will charge and play at the same time when attached to a Cowon or third-party 5 volt USB power adapter. (Zip-Linq makes a great AC/DC one for $10... Just use the U2's included USB "A" to 5-pin cord, and you've instantly got a home/car charger!) The simple design with push-button stick and rec and play buttons was a little strange to get used to at first, but after learning how to navigate the settings menu and song list, operating the U2 is a snap. The controls are customizable to a certain extent, so you can change how your U2 responds to the buttons to better suit your needs.

The one major draw-back I have found was the player's limitation of 53 total folders on the drive (that includes the handful of "system" folders the U2 creates by default). So you can organize the songs in your U2 into folders and sub-folders (just like iTunes' folders), so long as the total number of folders doesn't exceed 53. Once that happens, some folders with will randomly give errors like "NO FILE," when there actually are files present. I wish something in the literature had mentioned the 53 folder limit, 'cause I was a little scared the thing was malfunctioning until I did my own research and found a message board describing the folders limitation. Some smaller problems I have... the EQ settings can't be changed quickly, so when I move the U2 from earbuds to my car stereo, the extra bass feature (which sounds great in the earbuds) peaks my speakers and it takes some amount of menu navigation to get the sound right - a flat-response "line-out" jack would have been nice. Also, when you're navigating the song list or settings menu there's no way to change the volume. This is a problem if you're navigating with the control stick and a file that was encoded at a really high level starts to play 'cause you can't quickly change the volume or even pause/mute the song. If your ears are splitting, all you can do is yank out the headphone cord. Finally - and this is really minor - the U2 takes nearly 30 seconds to boot-up, which I think gets shorter if you remove the animated logo, but that's still a little long for my taste. My wishlist from Cowon on the U2 (they actually have a firmware wishlist section on their website) is more than one "dynamic playlist" to create more lists of my favorite songs. There's no AAC or M4A support either, so watch out with your iTunes AAC/M4A encoded songs - they won't play or show-up in the U2 while in play mode, but they will transfer over in Windows and take up storage space.

Overall, the iAudio U2 2gb model is great. It has a small, sleek design with easy navigation, long battery life, great sound quality and lots of handy features. It is the main competitor to the iPod Nano, and a worthy one at that. I use it all the time with earbuds, my car/home stereo and with a JBL On Tour battery-powered speaker set, and I couldn't be happier.

Very Fragile

Pros: Small SIze and Feature Set

Cons: Easy to break connectors RMA black hole

Review: It is too bad CNET does not test these devices in a real world situation. The headphone jack is very touchy and it is easy to push the plug in too far. I already sent the device in once because the USB jack came loose inside the case after the second USB cable insertion. Also do not make the mistake of sending everything back under RMA - just send the bare device, anything else you send will be lost. I am going to have to give this a low number because I have not been able to use it for almost 2 months, and now I have to carefully position the headphone plug in the jack to use it at all

My workout companion - wherever I go!

Pros: Unobtrusive, well-designed, great audio quality

Cons: Doesn't play lossless formats, record button close to play button; menus not well laid-out

Review: I love this player. I bought it to upgrade from sound quality and memory capacity of my six year-old Sony NW-S4.

Initially, I was surprised by how small the U2 is. Yes, I know the dimensions are available all over the internet, but I just couldn't believe it was as small as the pictures suggested. The unit is also user-friendly for basic functions. Without reading the manual, I was able to drag and drop songs into the player in Windows Explorer. I also like the JetShell software that comes with the player. Once the songs were loaded into the player I simply pushed the play button, and I was rocking.

Sound quality: exceptional for a tiny player. For reference, my wife calls me an audiophile (which I vehemently deny) but I must admit to having carefully built a two-channel audio system over the last five years that costs more than my car did new. I demand exceptional sound quality, and the U2 delivers. No, it isn't on par with a true hi-fi home system, but sounds phenomenal by portable standards, such that I don't find myself distracted by poor sound quality even when I'm just listening to the player and not working out. The OEM headphones don't stay in my ears very well, but for the sort time they do they sound good.

The only "complaints" -which is too strong a word- I have is the paranoia this unit causes me by having the record button next to and level with the play button with no space between them; the initial menu choices don't readily show you how to get to other advanced menus you may want (had to study the manual for this); and the unit doesn't play lossless media, of which some other players are capable. (I should mention here I use the WMA9 format with this player, and am still happy with the sound quality, as I mentioned above.) The only other complaint might be the quaint two-tone display, but if you're using the player for audio only (and especially if you use it for working out) the display doesn't matter. The U2's display is nice and bright when backlit, and everything is very legible.

I use this player in the gym, on the roads, on the trails in the mountains- everywhere. I couldn't ask for a better workout companion.

Good little player

Pros: Excellent sound qualities

Cons: 50 folder limit

Review: I like the sound and features of this player. The sore point for me is the 50 folder limitation with the firmware. You could easily reach the limitation of the player after putting 25 song from 25 different artist. Due to this folder limitation music management on this iAudio player can be a nightmare.

Avoid this like the plague.

Pros: Not very expensive so you won't mind tossing it.

Cons: It just doesn't work. Occasionally, it will power on and can then be used. Most of the time it refuses to do anything.

Review: I bought this for my daughter as a gift and replaced it with a different brand shortly after she tried to start using it. This is so light it doesn't even make a good paperweight.

Sweet Little Light Package

Pros: Small and featured packed, great accessories

Cons: Doesn't work well WalMart Downloads/ WMP 10's Sync, Folder Limit

Review: I just got this mp3player a few days ago. The product itself was smaller and lighter than I expected, even after seeing pictures. Time for the radio test. The radio came in crystal clear, though I did note some loss of quality when moving. I then recorded a song off the radio and transferred it to my pc. This little player recorded the song beautifully, almost sounds like its off a CD. I still haven't managed to test voice recording, so I can't comment on that.

Walmart/ WMP 10 issues:
Please note, I used Cnet's service finder and made sure this product would work with Wal-Mart [which uses WMP 10] before buying. And wanted to let people know about the issues I encountered. I buy most of my songs off of Wal-Mart's Music Download Store. Which have usage restrictions. When trying to sync [using WMP 10] some songs that I bought, I ran into some problems. I first tried syncing with WMP default options. Which creates a separate folder for each artist and this maxed out my folders [max 50]thus I wasn't able to play any songs. Finding the Sync options in WMP and un-clicking create folder hierarchy solved this problem. I then created a new folder to store all the songs I had bought from wal-mart, kept it highlighted, and clicked sync. The files moved to the player but not to any certain folder. To solve this I had to go into the drive from my computer and manually move the files to the folder.

The player is great and works well transferring files by drag&drop. Even including my issues with WMP [not the players fault], I would recommend this player to anyone!

Wonderful Device!

Pros: GREAT sound, intuitive controls, great price

Cons: Peripheral support lacking

Review: I have heard and used several different MP3 players, including the Ipods. For the music lover or musician, this wins hands down. The audio quality coming out of even the supplied headphones is WAY the Apple offerings.
In addition, the capabiities (radio, radio and voice recording, LCD viewer, etc. make this a win-win situation. If only COWON would begin making all the cool peripheral devices to partner with this incredible device, it would be perfect. By itself, it DOES deserve a perfect score!

Doesn't work out of the box, driver installation malfunction

Pros: cute design

Cons: won't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Review: My player won't turn on when connected through the USB. It will turn on and play the pre-loaded track fine when not connected.

When I tried to install the hardware, I get a message about a "stums.sys" file that I need to direct the wizard to. I locate it on the CD manually under the Win98 folder and still get a "problem with installation" prompt at the end of the download.

I tried everything posted: installing firmware, downloading the driver.
Calling customer service was a joke, no email response. I'm terribly disappointed and will never purchase from Cowon again.

I'm going to return this product in the next two days if nothing happens with this thread.

Cool device. Very hip. Easy to use the basic operation...

Pros: It's cool. It's hip, and if you are not electronically capable like me, you will find this little device easy to use (at least the basic operations). It has a FM radio and voice recorder

Cons: The User Guide provides little help on how to utilitze the more advanced options. It's not compatible with a lot of the new "TO GO" downloads. The radio doesn't seem to catch the stations too well.

Review: I just got this device yesterday. After playing around with it for few minutes, I learn how to use the basic controls w/o having to read the User Guide. However, I wanted to know how to create different Playlists which the User Guide doesn't really mention. Perhaps it's not an option to creat more than 1 Playlist... Does anyone know?? Also, the radio does not seem to catch all the normal stations a car radio can catch althought what it can do as a radio is acceptable. Considering I chose this MP3 player over the popular ipod because of the Radio option, they should really do better. I haven't had a chance to test the voice recorder on long recordings, but the short recording test runs I did were pretty good. I am happy with this as long as I can figure out a way later to creat more than 1 playlist...

This is the BEST mp3 player I've ever had!

Pros: quality of the sound (much better than IPod)

Cons: location of buttons

Review: I used to be IPod maniac, but after I tried iAudio U2, I was amazed with this one!

50 folders maximum is serious limitation.

Pros: Cnet already did good job on the pros.

Cons: Can only view/access 50 folders.

Review: If you want to synchronize using "folder hierarchy" checked in Windows Media Player, then you're going to have to manually move files out of the album subfolders into the upper level artist folders and delete the album subfolders. Otherwise, you won't be able to access your music from the folders in excess of 50. You can view all of them from Windows Explorer (they're physically present on the device drive), but the device won't be able to view or play music in the folders beyond 50. This is a royal pain in the butt. You can uncheck "folder hierarchy" but then it's not so easy navigating amongst your 250 songs.
Updated
I own both the U2 and the G3. The G3 does everything that the U2 does, without the 50 folder limitation. Also, I think it's better to get 30-50 hours on 1 AA battery for the G3 and not be wedded to USB or wall adapter charging of the U2. However, the U2 is definitely the way to go if you need the tiny size. But, seriously, CNET screwed up on their review of the G3. The G3 is a perfect device from a design standpoint, and should be rated higher than the U2.

Actually a nifty little device the iAudio u3 with video

Pros: small, very clear, relatively easy to use, does everything

Cons: music quality, hard to see for us older folks

Review: ok. I am writing here about the U3, not the U2. However, if the sound quality is the same in both then this advice may help. Everything about it is really good, however, my daughter has a Creative Zen mini(6 gig) which i bought for her last year. I just compared the music quality using the same song copied from the same computer with the same earpieces. The sound on the Zen was remarkably better. Much crisper tones and a pleasure to listen to. The U3 was good, but in comparison dissapointing. I purchased the U3 mostly because i could record radio shows off of the fm which is easy to do. Come to think of it , the zen plays fm but i don't know if it can record. I bought the U3 mostly because of the review here and because I wanted all the extra features the i-pod doesn't have has (line in, microphone etc). I assumed the audio quality would be as good. oh well. By the way, the very small video screen on the U3 is actually very viewable. Any videos can be loaded to play that u have on your computer. I have the 2 gig model. I didn't buy it just for this but it could come in handy. The unit was extremly easy to transfer...just plug it in to your usb and it is recognised. The ubs connector is not attached tho.

good unit, bad customer support

Pros: U2 worked well with good sound, and user friendly.

Cons: After 6 months I could not change modes. Customer support is non-existent. I've been communicating with a website for almost a week and still have not solved the problem.

Review: Will never by another COWON product again. The customer service is not acceptable and outweighs the quality of the product. There are too many other products that are just as good and cheaper. CNET should factor in customer service in their review.

Great! I love this thing.

Pros: Mounts as USB drive, FM radio, easy to use

Cons: Can only program to record FM radio 24 hours in advance

Review: I use this from a Linux system. It mounts as a USB drive and I simply copy ogg files to it. The directory structure can be used to organize files and quickly find things. I had it up and working with Linux in about 10 minutes.

I use the FM radio quite a bit and program it to wake up and record my favorite shows. The only disadvantage is that it has no concept of day of week (in the timer section) and so I cannot have it programmed to always record the same time slot every week.

The other problem with it is when it is plugged into the USB (to charge) it cannot be turned on to listen to music. So far the battery life has been plenty long for all day so I just plug it into the computer at night. It would be nice to be able to listen while it is charging.

As good as they say it is

Pros: Great product. Light, easy to use, intuitive design

Cons: Could do with just a little more power

Review: I love this player. A friend had it and I was impressed. Just bought my own. Its light and easy to use. Olds plenty of music. Serves as a jump drive too. Has an FM radio and a voice recorder too.

The device was extremely easy to use. I did not even have to read the user manual.

I wish at max volume or close to it, the sound had a little more punch to it. But then again, look at the size of this thing. Perhaps I am expecting way too much.

Overall, its a great product.

Great quality, but only 650 songs, 50 folders

Pros: Great design, easy to use, great sound quality

Cons: Can crash computer, bump up against limitations on odd occasions, tech support unreachable.

Review: After some online research, I found this great, cheap MP3 player, easy to use, with good sound quality. However, I actually had to read the manual to find out that you have to hold the joystick down awhile to be able to navigate by folders! Some of the defaults, like 1 minute idle time before auto-off, can be fixed with some tweaking.

Durable at the gym, good radio reception, the whole works. I generally recommend it, and being flash-based, it suits me better than iPod stuff.

However, I got a rude shock when suddenly it started saying "NO FILE." Turns out that there's a max of 650 files and 50 folders/subfolders, so if you subdivide your music by artist and album, you can hit the folder max fast. I don't know if the new 2Gb model will have the same limitations, which makes me hesitant to buy it.

It actually crashed my computer when on some of the additional USB ports, but not the 2 factory ports it came with! I didn't try switching it to "slow charge" mode, which is recommended to decreased the amperage used on unstable systems, but it might help others with the same problem. I figured this out on my own; tech support never got back to me.

Also, it would have been nice for the armband to be included, and the earbuds are low quality and drop out of my (presumably funny-shaped) ear. Still, I generally love this thing, and you can't beat the price.

Good For casual Music listeners

Pros: Its an mp3 player and it plays music

Cons: tiny controls and no wrist band or arm band

Review: I wasn't too impressed with this player. To me it had so so sound quality and decent features. Cowan Support will not respond to warranty!

Pros: great sound if you keep their ear phones

Cons: has poor design w/ usb port breaks inside

Review: Ive had my iaudio for 6 months and Ive loved it. I went one fateful day and the device did not show up..it was because the port had moved inside the case. So I thought no problem pulled out my receipt and my manual and tried to contact tech support by emails and phone. The phone wont even let you leave a voice mail and you cant speak to a human. NOT ONE email was returned. It was under warranty and eventually I had a local board shop look at it. The usb device is not connected to the board and its only soldiered in like 3 places all of which break after using it to charge so much. So though I liked it when it worked 170 is too much to spend every 6 months w/ this type of design. Try their tech support yourself make sure they will back it up...Ive seen boards where many others having same problems. I dont need to give this type of company who treats the customers any more business for sure!

Scary bad product

Pros: Attractive design

Cons: Support non-existent; user guide doesn't help much

Review: I spent over 6 hours trying to get a Windows Media Player library of 276 songs transferred to the memory of the device. Twice I was successful in loading about 35 songs, but the more I tried to download, the less showed up as part of the device's library on the screen.

The songs were in the memory -- I checked My Computer -- but somehow the device didn't show them.

I wonder whether I got a defective device, but it seems unlikely.

Other people have said good things about the tech support, but every time I called, the only response I got was "voicemail unavailable".

The User Guide does not give any instruction about downloading mp3 files, and the JetShell DVD has no user guide.

One of the best things I ever bought

Pros: Miniscule; sounds great; easy to navigate; great battery life; great FM reception; charges quite quickly through USB connection; included carry case with neck strap; voice recorder

Cons: no A/C adapter; no AM radio; 1GB may not be enough for music junkies; can't use it while it charges unless you buy A/C adapter; only plays MP3 and WMA

Review: I had been using my PDA to play MP3s and it was getting beaten up pretty good. I looked around and after reading many reviews I bought this dedicated MP3 player from Amazon for $141 on 09/21/05. I have not been disappointed. It uses flash memory and is small enough to wear around your neck. The provided carry case is a really nice freebie and it has kept the player in perfect condition no matter what I put it through. I've been using it to listen to radio shows so 1GB is more than enough space for me (about 40 hours of talk) but it may not be enough for someone who wants to put a bunch of CDs on their MP3 player. The lithium-polymer battery recharges in a couple of hours and I've used the player for 12 hours straight almost every day since day one. I've never run out of battery life so I'm not really sure how far it can actually go (the manual claims 20 hours after a 2 hour charge. I guess it's possible). It can't charge up while in use unless you purchase a separate A/C adapter. I thought about buying the A/C adapter but, since I've never run short on battery life, I just charge it every night and I'm good-to-go for the day. It also has a voice recorder which I've only used just to test it out. If you're big on recording interviews or classroom professors the voice recorder seems to work great. The player provides many options for customization. I love the fact that it can display the time (and date). The FM reception is great even in the building I work in (and the building is tough on radio reception). My only gripe is that I wish it had AM radio but nobody seems to provide this feature at this point. I'm not sure if it's an engineering issue or if the manufacturers think there's not a market for AM radio but I'd like to be able to listen to football, baseball, hockey, basketball, talk radio, etc. That's the only thing holding me back from giving it a perfect 10.

Outstanding functionability and usability

Pros: Works perfectly with Linux, acts as a mass storage device, great size prefect for sport (running, cycling ,etc.), Decent battery life. Plays multiple formats including ogg. Just plain awesome!

Cons: Screen is small but so is the player. Interfaces takes some getting used to.

Review: I think this player is fantastic. Its got all the functions that its competitors have and more. The fact that it works as a mass storage device is a great bonus for alternative OS users. Music can simply be "dumped" in respective folders and the player does the rest. The FM tuner, line-in recorder and built in microphone are great perks too. Sound quality is great, although better headphones are recommended. Its a prefect size for going to the gym or jogging and of course its got a built in rechargable battery which charges whilst plugged into the USB socket. Can put a foot wrong with this player. I've very glad I went with this one over some of the other players I was considering, including some of the micro HDD ones.

Excellent tiny little mp3 player

Pros: Excellent crisp sound quality, TINY, easy menu navigation, very simple to use, drag & drop music uploading, great features (fm tuner, voice recorder, etc)

Cons: Doesn't play wma dmr, playlists??, headphones aren't that great

Review: I've had this for 6 months, and so far so good. This is a small, high quality mp3 player. It's size allows you to store it in your pocket. The sound quality is GREAT, I didn't expect it to be so good. The FM tuner has pretty good reception. Love the voice recorder. The menu navigation and just about everything that has to do with this player is EASY. Nothing complicated about using this. I've been taking this with me to work out and other places and have had no problems with freezing or skipping.

I love this thing!

Pros: Great sound, size, weight, clean and ever easy to use.

Cons: Not the greatest battery life.

Review: Light, small and does everything you need it to for a MP3 of this size.

Does everything you need in a mp3 player and it's size and weight is prefect. Sound is great! (well of course you need to get better headphones then what comes with.) The menu's are easy to navigate. USB 2.0 easy to get music on and off fast and easy. It can also double up as a UBS drive if need be.

The battery life is bit low. It's 6 hours normally. But I found out if I just set the charge speed to slow it give it another 8 hours life. The big thing is a Fast is 2 hours to fully charge it and slow is 6 hours... The way you charge it is just plugging it in to your USB port and letting just sit there.

I love this thing. I wear it around my neck everywhere I go and listen to music wherever and whenever.

I don't know what to do with it when I work out sometimes now. My belt loop for the case broke. iAudio needs to make a case for it then it great.

It's a quality machine

Pros: Fantastic sound

Cons: Takes 30 seconds to start

Review: Like most, I did a lot of reading before I bought this product. I use it with Shure E4C earphones. I've owned two iRiver players previously (IFP-599 and IFP-180). I think iRiver is good but when I play them side by side the Iaudio wins easily. Am not an ipod basher but soundwise they are in lower league (in my opinion). The iaudio's sound is clean. You have umpteen options with the bass, treble and BBE. I like bass and there's plenty. Battery life is ample. What I like most is when I play old CDs the iaudio highlights subtle sounds that I've never previously heard before, especially at the treble range. I personally think it's that good. I have the 2GB and have 26 CDs. I rip my CDs at 226 OGG. The radio is surprisingly good compared with my iRivers. But then I don't really use that a lot.
Any gripes. It is possible that a MP3 player can be too small? I think so. So I've subtracted a point for that and given it nine out of 10. And I don't think it's as sexy as the nano. Apart from that, I think this is a quality product if you like your sounds to sound good.

great idea, poor execution

Pros: fm radio, ease of use

Cons: bad software, frequent resetting, awful customer service

Review: This cool widget was the answer to all my wishes until I discovered that it needed a reset just about every time it was tuned on. Want to add music? Reset. Need a USB charge? Reset. Turn it on/off from the wrong place? Reset. The need to reset this thing indicates that it either has bad firmware or it's a lemon. Either way, it has been a constant headache. Customer service has been less than forthcoming. I was sure that this sexy little thang was going to knock the socks off my iPod carrying husband. It would be cooler, smaller, have an FM radio, and really be the size of a pack of gum. Alas, it apparently is not to be. I hate the idea of having to admit that the herd of white widgets may have a point.

Its cool that you can charge it through your USB cable connected via desktop/laptop.

Disappointed.

Pros: Small, great sound, cool looks, joystick

Cons: TERRIBLE interface, TERRIBLE owner's manual

Review: This thing looks great, it sounds great, it's tiny and the joystick controller let's you navigate very easily.

But for someone who's not gadget savvy this little monster is a NIGHTMARE! It's not plug and play and to top it off the owner's manual tells you nothing about ripping files, converting them, or how to make playlists. I figured it out after hours of trial-and-error but only because I'm obsessive -- but I strongly recommend you buy somethng more user friendly because this has lots of room for improvement.

Almost perfect

Pros: Great sound, high capacity, line in, fm, void recording, small and light

Cons: no belt clip, bad stock earphones

Review: I bought this to replace my iFP-899 from iRiver. I have no complaints, everything works great, just wish it had a belt clip. Great flash player for the computer literate who are looking for something small and powerful.

Great... until the Nano

Pros: Style, substance, and features

Cons: Too thick in the post-Nano world? Needs SD slots!

Review: If Cowon wants a perfect 10, they should approximate the iPod Nano's form factor BUT replace the onboard memory with a couple SD slots (3 SD slots would be wonderful). The recording capability is great but it needs a greater range of bit-rates (both slower for talks and faster for quality music). If you give us multiple SD slots, improved recording, a Nano-like screen, then some extra thickness won't be a problem. (I don't think most of us care much about FM but, then again, what do I know?)

Great little mp3 player for working out.

Pros: Small, light, has FM radio, lots of features, no software required.

Cons: No belt clip or arm band.

Review: I bought this device primarily because I wanted an mp3 player that I could use at the gym and I needed one with an FM tuner (my gym broadcast's the audio from their television sets via FM). It baffles me that Apple doesn't see the usefullness of including an FM tuner in their iPods, and that was the main factor that steered me away from buying an iPod mini.

That said, this is a wonderful little device and I couldn't be happier. It's tiny. It's light. It's made of plastic but seems very sturdy and well put together. The sound quality is excellent. It requires NO software-- just plug it into a USB port and transfer your files. The LCD screen is easy to read and the controls, while not as simple to figure out as the iPod, are still pretty easy once you get the hang of them.

I haven't used the voice recorder yet, but it's nice to know that it's there in case I need it.

My only real complaint with this device is that it doesn't come with a belt clip or an armband, which seems really dumb. Fortunately, Cowon sells an armband on it's web site. I just ordered one today.

one sweet machine

Pros: no skip, good battery life, great sound and reliability

Cons: needs better headphones and an arm strap

Review: I spent a lot of time researching for the ideal device to listen to music while exercising. I wanted something that wouldn't skip, was light weight, and could hold a large amount of music. This player held all of the standards without difficulty. I've been very pleased with the results I've seen. It never skips, charges quickly, and has never run out of juice. It's so light you don't even notice it on you.

The only caveats are that to exercise with it you need better earphones, as the buds can pop out, and I wish iAudio sold an armband for it.

I have no reservations about submitting this device as the best MP3 player for exercising with. Heck, I'm going to buy another for my wife to work out with.

Skip free and the best MP3 player EVER!!

Pros: Size, sound quality, EQ, FM Radio and so much more!

Cons: Buy yourself a pair of Shure E2c earbuds

Review: Months of searching and it came down to this. I jumped online and ordered it. Two days later it arrived. From taking it out of the box you cannot believe how tiny it is. Totally easy to connect and download the MP3s you want. Ungodly fast! I loaded it with 250 songs and off to the gym I went. Sound quality and choices of EQ setting are AWESOME!! Downside was that the earbuds supplied continued to fall out of my ears. Gotta invest in some Shure E2c's to experience all this player has to offer. I did that and now i've got the perfect workout partner.

excellent quality

Pros: small size, sound quality, ease of use

Cons: none of any relevance

Review: i recently purchased the iaudio u2 for $164.00 from amazon. quite frankly, i am more than pleased with what it does. i was looking for something small that held alot of music as i was tired of using cd players and walkmans while working out. this is as big as a pack of bubbalicous gum. it fits easily in a pocket. i am not a tech geek. i am a drag and click type guy. i just like to read directions and follow them when it comes to computers, and i didn't even need to read anything to download files from my computer into this player. it is so easy. the jetshell software that came with it is so simple. just find your files and drag them. it was so fast. i didn't even think it was working. i had to disconnect the usb line, turn it on, and bam!! everything was already downloaded! nothing can ever replace simplicity. excellent sound quality. once you start messing with it, it is really simple to use. you can rip files from cd's, record files into it with the line in recording capablility, download your existing files etc. the controls are also easy to use once you start understanding them. believe me, even i, with having only attained a fifth grade level education, learned how to search for different folders, add and delete them, rip and download files all rather quickly. i'm sure there are many other capable compact flash memory players out there, and i'm sure i would have been satisfied with a number of them also, but having researched cnet and other's user's opinions on epinions and yahoo shopping i felt that this one was worth the higher price. i couldn't be more happier with my choice. the only negative thing i can say and it really is insignicant are the headphones. they sound good but sometimes when you're running or lifting they slip out your ear and you have to keep pushing them in until you find the right fit. oh well, i'll just wind up buying the head phones that fit around your ear. one more thing, if you do buy this player, remember this.. when you are downloading the software, the serial number is not the number behind the player itself. it is the number in the sleeve of the cd software. this took me many moments of frustrated bewilderment to find out. i had to go to iaudio.com and find the most frequently asked questions. guess which one was first? hello, rockhead..just thought i'd save you a few octaves. buy the player . i promise you won't regret it.

Awesome sound

Pros: Spectacular sound, intuitive controls

Cons: No armband, radio reception so so

Review: This little mp3 player sounds great. If you are looking for an extremely stylish and portable flash mp3 player with awesome sounds than look no further. The U2 will not disappoint you. However, the radio reception is not that great and if you are looking to use it while you are working out than need to find a way to attach it to your arm. I personally use the Muvo armband and it works great, but cost an additional $15. Overally spectacular sounds in mp3 mode.

BAD customer service! or should I say NO service.

Pros: Good product.

Cons: No Support.

Review: CNET need to include customer support on the review process. COWON has no support and good luck if you have to upgrade the firmware. Good product but worth nothing if the company will not support is's client base. This is the last time I use CNET for product review. I give the editor's a ZERO for this review. Before you buy go to iAudio and review the current customers asking for help. I'll be on it. haha

Pros: small , high quality and very easy to operate

Cons: price and small plastic case that is provided

Review: Excellent, as good as iAudio 5 IMHO with the plus over a rechargeable battey, easy menus, small, rugged case and pleasant display. The only real downwer is the cheap look and feel of the provided plastic carring case.

Small form MP3 with excellent performance!

Pros: Great sound quality, stylish package, drag&drop music transfer, easy to navigate, FM recording, line-in recording

Cons: FM reception needs improvement

Review: I read the review at http://www.jetaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3964 and it helped me make my decision to buy this MP3 after a month of reading reviews here and there.
I have my MP3 now and have been playing with it for a week. I was able to confirm that this item is indeed an excellent MP3 player. At first I had a hard time with the controls but later on I got used to it. The only thing is I find the FM reception not very good. Iam only able to get very few clear radio stations. But I cannot complain because it does not have an antenna. As long as it can receive my favorite radio station Im happy... besides I mostly use it to play MP3 music.
One of my drawbacks in buying this MP3 is the short battery life and that it has to be charged via USB. I charged it for 2 hrs when I bought the unit and have not have the need to recharge it yet. Ive been using it for 4 days with average of 6 hrs playback everyday. With that, im content.

Stylish with an amazing range of features

Pros: - Ergonomic, excellent sound, lightweight and stylish, durable, FM radio + mp3 recording

Cons: - included software, track transition (nitpicks)

Review: I highly recommend this thing -- it's a great tool for mobile computing (1 gig storage, USB 2.0), and its file structure has none of the annoying hangups of other flash players (case sensitive, folder-based, with upgradable firmware).

I was impressed by how simple it is to navigate menus, playlists, and song directories. The design is beautiful, very sturdy, and small enough to fit in your jeans' change pocket. The joystick is well-built and makes a satisfying click when you move it. The backlight is bright, with nice contrast, and the screen holds unbelievable tons of information for a flash player. The FM radio gets flawless reception, considering the thing has no antenna, and the built one-click mp3 recording makes it easy to grab songs from the radio.

It also comes with a nice range of accessories. I would never have expected to get all this stuff for $160.

The only bad news is that the included software looks like something from 1995, but it's completely uneccessary anyway -- it's so easy to navigate this thing, software is redundant. Also, track transitions are not seemless, so when songs blend together there is a split-second gap, but this is very hard to correct with flash player hardware. And there is a chance Cowon will upgrade the firmware to fix this at some point in the future.

Shouldn't be editors choice

Pros: size, capacity

Cons: battery life

Review: This unit is nice and small and has some decent features however there are units out there now that in the same size and capacity class that have more options and better battery life.

The iRiver IFP-899 (which is what the U2's design appears to be based on) is a 1G player which comes in many other capacities.
The differences:
40 hour battery life on a single AA
FM Tuner has a timer option for recording
Sleep mode
Voice recorder
Line in recorder
More playback modes, such as for audio books, A+B loop, 3 programmable play lists and more
EQ settings galore plus a user based and 2 3D sound

Excellent MP3 player for its size and class

Pros: Compact, high functionality, charges battery quickly

Cons: WMA files not supported, need headphone upgrade, only 1GB

Review: I've always been a fan of the more compact MP3 players and this one is the best I've owned. It has many features--FM radio, voice recording, in-line recording--that some its bigger cousins don't have and these features are solid and easily accessible.

The FM radio works great and the voice recorder is surprisingly effective for the ultra-compact size of the player.

The best feature of this player is that you don't have download or install some company's software to upload your MP3 files. The software for file transfer is drag and drop style and the interface is one of the most user-friendly and functional designs I've worked with. Little things like a very fast preview track feature before you upload and cut-and-paste erase/copy make file transfer very smooth and easy. Also, adding a folder entitled "Ramones" or "Janacek" and then dropping your respective MP3s into these folders is simple and push button.

If you've heavy-handed the controls can be a bit of a problem at first, but, for me, it's much easier than the Apple wheel or any other toggle switches I've used.

You need to purchase the AC adapter separately, but this is no big deal since it's only $10 and you can easily charge the player through the USB connection on your computer.

Although I wish it was slightly larger in file holding size--say 3-5GB--this is an excellent MP3 player/FM radio/Recorder and a great product.

Researched for 1 month for the best flash based player

Pros: small, very versitle, easy to use, and good quality

Cons: one or two minor software glitches (though upgradable thru firmware download)

Review: I researched for a month to find the best flashed based player for jogging and working out. I was torn between the 1GB Sony NW e507 and the iaudio U2. I finally decided to buy the iaudio u2 1GB because you could just drop and drag music from any computer. Not so, with the Sony to protect against copywrite infringment. Also, with the Sony, you have to use the Sony software for music transfer, which I've heard from every source is not very good.

Anyway, when I went to make my purchase for the iaudio U@, I discovered they made it in a 2GB version, and that sealed the deal. Though I did encounter a glitch when I shut down the computer with my player still attached, I managed to correct the problem myself.

I'm extremely happy with the purchase of my iaudio, and all my Ipod owning friends a quite impressed as well.

Great device in a small package

Pros: Sound quality, controls, light weight

Cons: ear buds, screen a little hard to read

Review: Bought 2, one for me and one for my wife. Both of us have used for exercise, in the car (using cassette adopter) and just while relaxing on the beach. First ipod-like device we have used and seems to do everything it is supposed to. Holds lots of music, easy to download to (just file transfers), charges quickly, long enough battery. Only downside for me is hard to see screen at times due to poor eye sight and small text/graphics, I don't like earbuds so like all the rest of the ipods, need to get quality sports headphones. Only accessory missing is a good armband. Bought two from Cowan's site and they seem to work out just fine. Even called their tech support and talked live to a person to help understand how to use the armband. Sounds stupid but I needed some instruction cause there wasn't any with the armband. Seems you need to use the iaudio cover and then the armband.

And oh yeh, the graphic equalizer and different sound controls are awesome.

Fantastic Player!

Pros: Style, build quality, ease of use, size, sound quality and overall functionality

Cons: None found yet

Review: I've had the U2 for just three days and still getting used to all of the functions. I can say this little player really packs a punch in several ways.

Sound: Several EQ settings to choose from along with great sound enhancements such as BBE, Mach3bass, MP Enhance, etc.

Size: small and light yet very sturdy feeling

The U2 is very eay to use in terms of navigation. It's equally easy transferring files. No special programs required, Windows Explorer is all you need. It does however, come with Jetshell if you wish to use that for file transfer.

Of course there are several other functions such as in-line recording, voice recording and FM that I have yet to get into. My main purpose for buying was MP3 playing and everything else is a bonus.

Nice fitting carrying case and neckstrap make going out with this such a breeze.

A great, compact music player!

Pros: Size, sound quality, drag and drop file copy, supports most file formats

Cons: The case really needs an armband!

Review: Overall, this is a great little audio player. I spent a lot of time researching players, and decided on the iAudio U2. The size is similar to the iPod Shuffle, but with the U2 you get a DISPLAY so you can see what's going on, plus you get extra audio controls (equalizer, bass boost, etc.) to tailor the sound, an FM radio, a line-in encoder and a microphone voice recorder too! You can even use the U2 as a USB 2.0 flash drive to move files - very handy! The interface is easy to use, and the player supports MP3 , WMA (including protected WMA), and OGG. The player is also flash upgradeable, so new features can be added in the future.

I use Windows Media Player to rip songs from CDs and keep my music organized in folders by artist and album on my PC. To move music to the player, all I have to do is drag and drop folders, which makes loading music very easy! Some players, such as iRiver, require you to use their software to load the player. Other players require all the music tracks to be in a single folder on the player. Not so with the iAudio U2! Just plug it into a Windows 2000 or higher PC, and it shows up as a removable drive. Drag, drop, and go!

The one real gripe I've got is that the case doesn't come with an arm band or a belt clip. Part of the reason I chose a flash player was to use it while running, cycling, etc. The case does have a loop that would allow you to use a belt (who runs while wearing a belt??), but no clip, and no armband. Is this too much to ask?
Updated
One other thing - go to the iAudio website and download the PDF manual. There are many advanced features of the player that aren't explained in the manual that comes in the box.

Extremely happy with well researched purchace

Pros: Tiny, easy to use, light weight, great display, great sound

Cons: Batterylife maybe, lack of easy to obtain accessories, tape adapter issues

Review: I wanted a great MP3 player that would be 1) small and 2) not more than $200. The iPod was out even though I still would like one in the future when they are more powerful than small countries. I did a lot of research on finding the right player and it came down to this one and the creative MuVo Micro. Both had 1 Gb versions that were under or at the $200 mark and unfortunately none of the electronic stores in the area had these on display for me to play with so I had to just make the judgement call.

Of course I checked Cnet (great unbiased reviews and video) and the user opinions but none really helped with the decision (that's why I'm writting my own hoping to help someone).

Both of the players feature MP3 capability, a FM tuner you can record MP3s or WAVs from, and a built in microphone to record voice. The iAudio U2 also has a line in recording ability I personally have not used and don't remember if the MuVo Micro has one but either way this will only be important to a few people. The FM tuner is okay as it recieves all strong signals but it will cut out before a real radio or car tuner, it also doesn't make the static sound for channels that aren't there but a slightly wierder sound (fans of listening to static should not get this). The microphone is good enought that on the max volume I could record one of my 100 person classes from the midrow away from the professor. Also on the lowest setting for voice recording you can fit days on this little player and the low quality for voice is all you really need. It actually saved me on one of my projects cause I recorded a class on this little device.

The controls for the iAudio are quick to learn and easy to use. I don't even use the hold switch anymore since the buttons are not even accidentially pressed when in my jacket or pocket. The screen is easy to read and fits a good deal of information on it.

The thing to realize that effects both this player and the MuVo and I assume all other players that have a similar set of features is you only have one storage location. If you want to record the radio or voice you cannot fill the player with music as that is the storage you use to record to. I just felt it needed to be clearly said as no one really just says it plainly.

The other problem specific to this player is that its accessories are hard to get as there is only one source for those. I got the player at another online vendor becuase it was cheaper than on Cowon's site and the arm band is an additional $7 but shipping is $10 which is a little ridiculous. The other thing is while I have not tested the battery life it is most definately less than the 20 hours the web site says. I don't know if it is close to the 15 horus that Cnet says you should get but I don't have to many problems as it charges quickly and comes with a long USB cord or a very convienent key ring USB plug. Thats another thing that needs to be said plainly: The iAudio U2 does not have a removable battery. It is internal and rechargeable. You can actually see the voltage in one of the menus (top is around 4.12 V and it dies aroudn 3.50 I think).

There was a new firmware update only two days ago (5/30/05) which fixes the other problem I'd bring up but don't need to anymore. I know how important it is to do research before you buy a player and I even looked at and considered the physical dimentions of the two players when buying mine. I'll be 100% honest and tell you had I gotten the MuVo I would probably be just as happy with it as this player but I have never used one so that is just a specualtion. In the trend of honesty, you will most likely be very happy with this specific player or one with similar features. They are great and do it all.

I won't be buying a new MP3 player for a long time or until the new iPod which plays everything under the sun and has a tiny lens that projects an HD image and takes pictures and video comes out and is smaller than my iAudio (i.e. maybe 5 - 10 years).

Very Happy!

Pros: Lightweight, easy to use, good battery life

Cons: Charger is not included

Review: I purchased the U2 to replace an iRiver unit that I had.

CNET was right in their review. This unit is lightweight, easy to store songs with direct USB connection, and looks darn cool.

The only thing I can say negatively is that I wish the U2 came with the electric charger included. I had to order that separately after I realized it was not included.

I would recommend this unit.

Great until it broke the next day and took me a month to return

Pros: well since it literally broke probably the second day that i started using it, i didnt have many pros

Cons: the program used to transfer my files was INCREDIBLY confusing, the controls were not intuitive at all and were just confusing, the company's practically impossible to contact, and it broke.

Review: Basically I got it, even though now that i think about it it was WAY overpriced, and the first day I used it I spent over 3 hours trying to get about 100 uploaded onto the player. My dad's a computer programmer and even he had trouble understanding their program. And then it was great, even though fatter than the pictures deceive you to belive it is, and then the second day it just froze on me, and I had to keep pressing the reset button, and when I turned it back on, it would freeze again. While I did have it though, the sound quality I guess was good, and it had a lot of options to do things, but the mic recorder was horrible, because I couldn't hear a thing. And it was incredibly difficult to navigate the controls.
Then when I called the company, they were impossible to get in touch with, and their idiot workers asked the most ridiculous questions and couldn't help me at all. So basically I was almost late returning it, and I had the product for two days when it broke on me.
I just wanted a simple flash drive player that could hold enough songs for a long amount of time. I read all of the reviews and thought I'd get a good one and never suspected I'd get a dud, but I obviously did. So if you want to take your chances good luck but I'm incredibly disappointed and mad and plan on never doing business with JetAudio ever again.

Everything I wanted for running/working out.

Pros: Intuitive, easy to navigate menu system, pretty decent FM reception with lots of presets, respectable sound, so so so tiny, good display. Flash memory holds plenty of tunes for the gym.

Cons: Any smaller and it would disappear, wish the toggle switch was a bit larger(maybe even with a rubber tip?), but mostly: WHERE IS THE BELT CLIP?

Review: I use this strictly for workouts, therefore the flash memory is the way to go. I like to switch between MP3 and FM, so this player is perfect. It gets respectable FM reception, and it's easy for me--in either MP3 or FM mode--to switch between tracks/preset FM channels with a quick nudge of the toggle, which is very important for those of us who want to keep our focus on where we're running rather than the controls of the player. My only real beef--and astonishingly, you can apply this to virtually every smaller flash player on the market--is the LACK OF BELT CLIP?!?!? What would it cost, 25 cents to make and include with the kit? Ridiculous. Flash MP3 players are for gym rats, and sweaty, distracted athletes need a secure, simply, out-of-the way solution for where to put the damn thing, be it on the arm(not for me) or on the waistband(moi). Think about it, Cowon/JetAudio/iAudio. Please.

This is a superb small MP3 player, with so many nice futures

Pros: Great sound quality

Cons: an AC connector would have been better.

Review: Just a great MP3 player. I will certainly recommended it to the high price I-Pod users.

Great flash-drive mp3 player.... very pleased

Pros: great headphones, supercrisp sound, easy to use, lightweight with LCD screen

Cons: expensive for a 1GB player, should have come with an armband for working out and iaudio probably doesn't have as many accessory options as leading brands such as IPod

Review: i didn't purchase the iAudio U2 because I am trying to spite Apple like many others. Instead, I bought this item because i wanted something exclusively for when i go to the gym which was lightweight. In that sense, this item clearly beats the iPod Shuffle and was the most attractive item.

At the sametime, this item is the same price as the 4GB ipod minis now. So that's something for everyone to think about. Nonetheless, i'm happy because this entirely suits my needs, a take to the gym mp3 player.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

Pros: Size, Weight, Functions, Compatibility

Cons: No local stores had it. I had to order.

Review: I wrote a book here on how awesome this MP3 player is however it was too long for me to even proof read so I deleted it and started over……In short......I like it! You will too! It's awesome!

The best MP3 flash-based player ever

Pros: Easy to use with its joystick,, nice interface, brilliant sound with BBE effects, extremely light and small, good battery life(20hrs), multi-codec support...well, everything is good about this player!

Cons: Bought it 4 months ago and havent encountered any problem. Its gr8!

Review: Please, if you are about to buy an iPod Shuffle, stop to think about it...please. iAUDIO U2 will be the best investment you will ever do...

though expensive, it has everything I wanted

Pros: small size, voice recorder and radio, FIRMWARE!!!

Cons: small colorless LCD, navigation can be frustrating

Review: I have researched mp3 players for months and have found that for the on the go, technical person the iAudio U2 cant be beat. I have a large music selection but the 1 Gb model's 500 songs is plenty to keep me entertainded for few days. I have had a few minor problems with organization of my music on the player, but Im still getting use to it I guess. If your willing to look beyond the feature lacking ipod, I highly recomend considering this player.

hands down Best MP3 player ever

Pros: First of all, the 2 people below me who don't recommend this are retarded, and they don't even have one, so don't listen to them! This player costs slightly more than the ipod shuffle but COMPLETELY dominates the shuffle and any other flash based mp3 play

Cons: stock headphones are so-so..get a good pair to really take advantage of the sound quality.. armband sold seperately

Crazy Good!!!!

Pros: Okay. Too many people don't even have this player and hate it for some odd reason. Well, I have it and it is CRAZY good!! It's light, sounds GREAT (I don't know why the CNET review said that there was a hiss?) It just feels like a regular necklace when on

Cons: It is expensive, but it is just too good to penalize too much on that... The player itself is very prone to fingerprints so you might want to put that ugly but shock-absorbing (it's a soft-type case w/ rubber-type outlines) case. The battery life could be

Wonderful sound

Pros: the sound, size, and radio reception (including the clarity of the reception) in my area. also the many different ways of altering the sound can be fun to toy with

Cons: i sometimes forget to charge it (through the usb) i am also a bit afraid to sweat with it in the gym because it is so small and a bit expensive

Nice capability in a small package BUT...

Pros: Size, style, ease of use, shows up as folder on XP - no software required

Cons: Does not support NAPSTER to GO service. iRiver, RIO, Creative do. Major disadvantage if you like using it in the gym and want to download music onto your device without buying the song.

Doesn't play WMA-DRM

Pros: Most of what the CNET review says is true.

Cons: The CNET review says that it plays protected WMAs. IT DOESN'T!!! As of 12/30/04 there is no firmware update to change this and no promise that an update will be forthcoming in the future. Consider the SanDisk 1GB player - it is much cheaper, seems to h

Pros: Great feature set and it's made well! I just returned my Sandisk 1gb player (cheaply made POS). This one is so much better and even smaller! iAudio makes a quality product!

Cons: No protected wma's yet. Fair earbuds (but who really expects high quality earbuds to be bundled with any player?). You can keep the laniard and give me an armband. Raise your hand if you've ever worn your mp3 player around your neck!??

Cons: None to date...my only regret was that i wish i had the money for the 1gb, i had to settle for 512MB which is more than enough when OGG is ready...its a bit pricey but u get what you pay for and I chose IAudio over iRiver...

Pros: Great for running! Small & Light, Sturdy, Feature Rich, Excellent Sound Quality, Dynamic Playlists, Plays Protected WMA, Smaller and better design than IRiver!

Cons: IAudio 5, G3, and M5 Models coming with better features and new chipsets in November/December. In general IAudio lacks accessories - car charger? Rechargeable battery - it's a PRO and a CON, 15 hours of life isn't bad but not great. FM Radio works okay...
