"M is for Magnificent"4.5 starson by btate0121
Pros: vivid color screen, longer battery life, voice/FM station recording, FM tuner, ease of use
Cons: because it's not as popular as the iPod, there aren't a lot of 3rd party accessories. iPod has a huge advantage here.
Summary: Let me start by saying that i LOVE the video iPod. i owned one of these before i bought the vision:m. I'd like to establish some trust with any iPod owners who are reading this before i start preaching my gospel of conversion. can i testify? I'll make this quick. I've always wanted an iPod, never looked at another product. Went out and bought one.. and loved it for about 3 weeks, and i still sometimes miss it. It's sleek, sexy styling is enticing. a coworker has a nano, ironically the black one (my ipod video was black) so i get a bit of notalgia looking at it sometimes. but anyway. about 4 days ago i decided that enough was enough. My ipod needed to be able to have voice recording. this was a must for me. i'm a musician and i need to be able to record song ideas on the fly. so i head over to the ipod store and sure enough.. theres an extension you can buy. It plugs right into the ipods dock connector and even as a lil stick mic that swivels. but after thinking about it... wouldn't that be kind of akward? and for $40 bucks is it worth it? and it's an extra peice i'd have to carry around, so that on the fly recording turns into "darn, i gotta pull over to the side of the road and get my microphone out". by the time i'm done getting it set up, i forgot the concept....darn. then i tought about a creative muvo that i got from apromotion with my cable company. i remembered looking them up online and remembered that there were some with FM tuners, and voice recorders. that would be neat, but i'd sacrifice on storage.. not acceptable. but that was at least a year and a half ago. still so in love with my ipod.. i pushed the idea aside and forgot about it. then while shopping for a Razr i came to cnet to check out some reviews on the phone (really what's the difference between the V3 and the V3i?). but came across a review for the vision m. i remembered my thoughts from earlier about the creative players and checked it out. admitedly i was skeptical of the high revies (*gasp ... NO player could be more loved than the iPod right?). but i could't find one back review. i checked out other sites to see if this was a fluke, circuit city, amazon, all of them, they all hailed this thing as the ipod killer. I had to know. i took a chance. and sold my ipod on craigslist.. the same day, went and bought the vision. i'm a changed man. america has been blinded!!! the vision is the TRUTH!!! it has everything i've wanted! ALL FOR THE SAME PRICE AS THE IPOD!!! i felt robbed... but anyway... you have my story.. now for the product pros/cons.
pros: VERY smooth transition from ipod to vision as the conrols and menus are very similar (i think this was on purpose). LONGER battery life (i've only had this thing for 2 days now, so i've used it pretty heavily just trying to get a feel for it.. and have never gotten it below the halfway point so far. iPod battery life was good but questionable. there were a few days i had to spend with a red battery because i left the charger home. video playback is smooth and the resolution seems a whole lot sharper tho i know it isn't. TRUE on the fly voice recording. I set my shortcut key the the recorder.. and at anytime i can tap the key and it starts recording my voice (except when listening to the radio, it will start recording the radio). hit it again and it will stop. then using the back button, i can return to what i was doing. GENIUS! this is a small thing.. but the cool blue LED at the top to tell you its on... nice touch.. ipod doesn't have ANY LED's. The buttons light up. this was something i didn't like about the ipod.. but there were only 5 buttons on the interface and once you got used to 'em you didn't need a light, but it would have been nice to have 'em.
cons: i only have 2 gripes. 1 the lack of 3rd party accessories and 2 the included slip cover stinks. it's a leather like bag... c'mon? i guess they save the money there to dump features into the product. oh well. actually there's one more thing. The software.. i can't comment on it really... i only use WMP10. works just fine. got my movies, pictures, and music transered in a flash. of course if you use the software you can do things like convert media (video or audio format conversions), syncronize outlook for calendar and contact data. things like that.. but i have a PDA for that.. no need.
all in all.. a GREAT player.Updated
i just watched a 3 hour movie on this thing... NO PROBLEMS!!! I STILL HAVE ABOUT 25% battery left!!! I couldn't even get movies to load into iTunes much less the iPOD. Apple... take notes.. the proprietary monopoly crap is getting old.
