"Great product that potentially smashes the ipod."

by benchase on December 9, 2005

Pros: Screen, looks, touchpad > Scrollwheel, battery life, subscription content

Cons: uhh, i dunno. i guess you could say you dont have itunes' video content.

Summary: Somehow, I'm not surprised that all you ipod lovers are rating this low just because you are ashamed that another company has come up with a product that can challenge apple's effective monopoly on the market. Here we have a product that is not a knockoff. It has a different control device, different colors, and operates on the same basic principles of Creative's original Vision... need I remind you all that that came out before the ipod? This has a brighter screen, better colors, and better battery life. Simply because another company chose to put out an upright video player as well, following the suit of Archos & Cowon as well as Apple, is not a big deal. As a matter of fact, Iriver did it a long time ago as well. Apple, here, is the copycat... creative is just changing their line to suit the niches of the market. In case you don't recall... creative had a PVP out long before apple.

How is it possible for the Creative Zen Vision M to hold 15,000 songs while the IPOD 30GB can hold only 7,500 songs? The Ipod requires 60GB to be able to hold 15,000 songs. Just wondering how Creative was able to do this.

i agree 100%. i have a zen micro 5gb and i absolutely love it. it is far better than the ipod mini ever wanted to be, if this thing ever dies, im going straight to the new zen vision:m. great product. sexy design.

I see people in here defending Creative with their lives, and bashing people who are defending Apple. Hypocrites. Creative and Apple have both made very good products. Accept it Creative fanatics the ipod is pretty cool, and pretty darn sexy looking. Accept it ipod fanatics the Creative Zen Vision:M is pretty cool, and has great picture quality (and by the look of the picture of it, a better way to view photes too).

i agree completely, and i just want to add to the whole "origional" thing. The only origional player apple has made was the shuffle... and that thing is a piece of crap.

Most of your facts are straight, and Creative probably does do a lot better in terms of PVP function. But iPod is still a mp3 player. And as much as you said right, this is not a ten. Still quite thick, and the touch scroll isn't as attractive as the wheel(personally, would've been better if they made it flat to the surface and a little thinner.) iTunes is still probably the best unit-computer sync softwear and the ability to charge the iPod using USB is pretty nice. Transferring songs to most units takes power, but iPod successfully masters that problem. Yeah, this has potential to go somewhere great but Creative needs to thin their designs to somewhere around at least .4-.5 inches and tweek it just a little in terms of looks and it'll be just as good if not better than iPod.

First off, I use a Zen Neeon as my primary audio player. In the past I owned an ipod mini which my wife has permanently borrowed, and I liked it a lot. In the past I owned a Zen Muvo also. I do not consider myself especially biased toward either company's products.

I don't doubt that the Zen Vision M is arguably just as good or possibly slightly better. If you have mostly WMA's and MP3's then it certainly isn't at any disadvantage. But all that could be said about the Zen Micro, Neeon and other iPod mini/nano competitors and they didn't exactly put the competing Apple models on the trailer, did they?

Frankly, all this hype about whether this product or the next is "the iPod Killer" (which CNET is as bad as anyone about) is ridiculous. Apple's products have consistently been as good as anybody's over the past 2-3 years, have a huge user base and are painless to use. Until a company puts out something significantly better for significantly less money, nothing is going to "kill" the iPod. Anyone can tell you that in business, you do not knock off the king of the mountain by being slightly cheaper and arguably just as good.

To me, this is just another product that tracks the equivalent iPod's specs and features and is priced competitively. So while it certainly is a good choice, I don't see how it's such a compelling one that people are going to choose it over the iPod en masse.

What I don't understand is why Creative decided to go with the same look as Apple. Why didn't they go with a widescreen format rather than the regular 4:3 ratio? Apple was able to because of the scroll wheel. Apple might figure out a way to do this in the future, but I am not sure why Creative didn't decide to do it now. With different controls, why didn't they go widescreen?

You seem pretty hung up on the iPod comparisons...what's your issue?

  • reply by: batmanyo on December 9, 2005

Can you only put the videos Creative has out or can you put like TV shows you have recorded on your comp onto it?

Not to mention it's twice as thick. More than likely has a poorer unit-to-computer intergration.
You are acting like Apple thinks it was the inventor of portable mp3 players. They are not, neither do they take credit for it. When they first launched their product, they were hopeful at best and it clearly went farther than they anticipated. Indeed Creative's unit is not a knockoff. Of course the iPod wasn't the first in any of its designs. But does that really matter? No, iPod is a market dominator, not just on the looks of the iPod (the first one was atrocious), but on its intergration. iPod-software/store-computer is what makes it what it is. If there was another player out there that had made the hardware-software-store intergration first, they would have been the dominating factor here. Apple is not at fault for being what it is, well it is at fault, because they were smart enough to fit in the missing pieces. If Creative had done so before Apple, there probably wouldn't be no iPod, iTunes, etc.

True, yes it might smash the iPod in terms of features (I love the longer battery on Creative). But it doesn't smash the iPod-iTunes (software and music store service) combination.
I'll get a Creative when it has ALL of the features of those, then I'm sold.
Until then, Creative can kiss my boots.
