| The DJ's carrying case obscures its display and controls, but the in-line remote helps remedy that. | The buttons on the remote mirror the playback controls on the main unit. |
Dell's roller control doesn't permit you to scroll through long song lists with the speed of the iPod, but it's functional and--like the rest of the controls--indicative of the solid build quality of this device. It's ensconced in an outward bulge in the casing, which prevents accidental song selection. Depressing it selects whatever's highlighted on the blue-backlit LCD (very similar to the one found on the Creative Zen NX). The roller control is flanked by five additional large buttons on the player's face, all of which are backlit and well spaced for large-fingered users. Four rubber protrusions on the underside of the device stop it from sliding on flat surfaces.
One of the DJ's biggest strengths is its ease of use, which renders the manual useless for all but the greenest of newbies. In conjunction with dedicated Menu and Back buttons, the extremely intuitive menu system--very similar to the iPod's--makes navigation effortless. If needless complexity irritates you, you'll enjoy this player's clean interface design.
Dell bundles an in-line remote control, which lacks a display but allows you to skip between songs and adjust the volume while the device is stowed away or riding on your hip with the included carrying case. The remote clips to bag straps or clothing, and it has a Hold switch for temporarily disabling its buttons (a sturdy, round slider on the main unit does the same for controls located there). You also get a USB 1.1/2.0 cord and an AC power adapter for charging the internal battery. The DJ plays MP3 and WMA music, which you can browse by album, artist, genre, track, or playlist. You can also add any track or group of tracks to a separate on-the-fly playlist, without a computer. While connected, the DJ shows up as a removable drive in Windows, but that's good only for transferring data files to the device. For music, you have to use the included Musicmatch software. We wish you could load the device via Explorer, but at least the Musicmatch compatibility means you can transfer secure WMAs purchased from the Dell Music Store (a rebranded version of Musicmatch's service). To prevent piracy, songs cannot be uploaded from the DJ onto another computer.
An internal microphone on the side of the device records voice memos. In record mode, the display shows level meters that fluctuate with volume, but since there's no way to control the mike sensitivity, they're more for cosmetic purposes than for preventing recordings from being too soft or loud. Like MP3s or WMAs, voice recordings cannot be uploaded to a computer.
For adjusting sound, the DJ packs eight EQ presets, as well as a slick four-band graphical equalizer for customizing equalization. We like that the player has a healthy selection of Shuffle and Repeat modes but were annoyed by its inability to play albums in order, even with Shuffle deactivated. If you want your albums to play in the proper order, you'll either have to create individual playlists for them or add numbered prefixes to the tracks' titles. We found the player's sound to be clean and strong, an appraisal borne out by the specs: a 94dB signal-to-noise ratio and less than 0.1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion. The bundled headphones are passable, but we heard clearer highs and lows using our test 'phones.
The area in which the DJ truly rocks is battery life: an astounding 19.5 hours--significantly more than the 16 hours that Dell claims. Charging the unit fully with the AC adapter takes about 6 hours. You can also charge the unit using the USB 1.1/2.0 connection, but that takes longer, and it doesn't work if the battery has run down to less than 25 percent. But the one thing we don't like about the battery is that it's not removable. That leaves us keeping our fingers crossed and hoping the DJ won't suffer the same sort of power problems after long-term use that plagued early versions of the iPod and the Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen.
File transfers were 0.86MB per second over USB 1.1 and, as one would expect, a speedier 2.4MB per second over USB 2.0. This means you can fill the player's 20GB capacity (about 370 hours of music at 128Kps) in almost 7 hours over USB 1.1, or in about 2.3 hours if your computer has USB 2.0.

Had for 5 years and still working like a champ!
Pros: I have over 1600 songs stored in the device and still has half the storage left. Easy operation volume almost too much! Easy buttons and controls . Love the remote plug in to move between songs and adjust volume. Super durable.
Cons: A little heavy, sometimes sticks on certain songs, battery life only so so. The playlist option is a little confusing and not always easy or possible to add songs to. Only playlist 1 seems to work although manual says multiple. Has blown 8 headsets.

Good while it lasted
Pros: Long battery life, easy downloads, a lot of songs!
Cons: Rather large, plain backround, froze up too often
The battery life is awesome! It seemed like I would never have to charge it...but of course I did occasionally. I like how you can create a playlist right on the mp3; but you have to put all the songs on there at once, you can go back and add them. But you can add more on the computer. It doesn't have all the other gadigs like "modern" mp3 such as photos, videos, FM radio...But isn't a mp3 player for listeing to your music...?
The main problem that I ran into was that it would freeze up sometimes, don't ask me why. But it was very easy to fix, just put a paper clip through the reset button. Don't worry, it won't erase your songs. Then the major problem that I had with this mp3 player was that the last time it froze up, and I restarted it, it didn't come back to the music. It went to a menu called "Rescue mode" and wouldn't go to the songs. In the end, there was hardisk problem, and I lost all 1000+ songs!!! Let's just say I was A LITTLE mad and disappointed. That's a lot of songs.
I talked to dell's customer service for 2.5 hours, they did everything they could trying to fix my mp3 before we knew it was a goner. Once they couldn't fix it, they offered me a discount on the Dell DJ 20gb!! At least their customer service was very helpful!
I would recommened buying maybe the newer version, they may have all these bugs out by then. But I would tell you to buy this mp3 if you got a really good price b/c my sister has one just as old as mine (3 yrs b4 RIP) and hers is still working fine.

Good for cost, not so for actual use.
Pros: Awesome battery life, quick charge, decent recordings
Cons: Bulky, buttons have problems, slow, no "Play all" feature.
The bulk I dealt with, it's not very attractive, but hey, it held all my music, and it was all I could afford- beggers can't be choosers.
However, I started having problems with the ff, play, and rewind buttons. I would push FF, and the song would pause. If I pushed pause, the player would often freeze, or nothing would happen at all. I assumed it was just a small bug and figured I could deal with it.
Later I started having problems with the entire player lagging, and taking an unusually long time to skip tracks, or access menus. Power up was a pain, as it took sometimes up to a minute to even get started.
With all of these problems I was having, I think the fact that there was no option to simply "shuffle" all of the tracks was the biggest annoyance. With over 70 artists, having to go through and make a playlist for everything was incredibly irritating and time-consuming. Each time I added new music I had to individually add them to my playlist so I could enjoy all of my music.
To top all of this off, my player completely gave out on me in May, less than 6 months after purchase. Upon trying to power it up, a message was displayed informing me that the player-in short-couldn't power up. It gave me 4 options to try and fix the problem, and after trying all of them several times I recieved the same message repeatedly. "Hard Drive Failure". So, my hard drive crashed, and it was impossible to get anyone at Dell on the phone that could help me.
I don't recommend this player, unless you want a clunky, annoying problem for an mp3 player.
I'm going to purchase a Creative player. It's less space, but I've downsized my music folder anyhow, and their players are certainly more attractive.

Less than stellar
Pros: Cheap, easy to use, excellent battery life
Cons: Poor audio performance, weak hard drive, little too big for what it does, short lifespan.
Now, my first unit had to be replace (under warranty)after a short, 14 month life. I was very dissapointed when Dell sent me a refurbished unit (the new DJ-20 and DJ-30 were out) but I have stuck with it for the last 2 years.
Now (after the warranty expired, of course) I'm starting to have problems with my current unit. It has a tendency to freeze up, forcing me to give it a hard reset. The track forward button tends to pause the track instead of moving on to the next one, and overall, I am dissapointed in the lifespan of the unit.
I need something that will last longer.

A great iPod alternative- very simple and easy to use
Pros: Very easy to use, great sound, audio recorder a nice touch, very cheap
Cons: No FM tuner, freezes often, can't play music from DJ on computer, a bit outdated
There are a few setbacks, however: an FM tuner would be a handy addition. I've also found that it's gotten slower and slower and freezes more than it should with more use. Granted, I've dropped it and am using up almost the full 15 GB, but sometimes waiting for it to load can be a pain. The biggest drawback I've found is that when you hook it up to a computer, be it your own or someone elses', you can only transfer one way- from the computer to the player. You can't edit voice recordings on the computer, and you can't play them or other music on the computer either.
Overall, it is a bit outdated. If you're looking for more features (such as a colour screen, FM tuner, or even pictures), I might direct you to the Creative Zen MicroPhoto or Archos Gmini XS. However, for the casual music listener with a fairly large music library, this is definently the right player.

Pros: Excellent battery life, creating playlists is a breeze, easy to use, load up, and organize. Of course, the price.
Cons: Mine crashes every now and then. Also, when I am using it when working out, it sometimes does this weird "skip" thing. Sometimes I'll hear a snip of the previous track that was playing.

Great Player - - But HUGE Problem
Pros: Great battery life, easy to use
Cons: Slightly bulky, massive design flaw...
I've had the new one for almost a year, and the SAME THING happened. Only problem is that it's not under warranty any more, so I'm stuck with an mp3 player that works fine internally, but doesn't play music. Oh well. I just took it apart; I think the connection between the headphone jack portion of the player and the headphones gets worn out incredibly fast. Just don't unplug your headphones. EVER. It did however, work GREAT before this problem.

Pros: Cheap($150 for the 15 GB) Great Battery Life Compatible with Linux(so is the iPod) I just got my iPod w/FM-Tuner/Inline remote for $194 shipped. The price alone makes this purchase worth it

Cons: Weight and size are the only drawbacks on the Dell DJ. No ACC support if you one of the .001% of the people who use it. - Probably had a BETA back in the day ;)

Product not hype

Easy to use, and cheap
Pros: I have heard that there are problems with the Ipod when transfering songs through windows. With the Dell DJ I have found it very easy to use. I figure out the jukebox without reading anything instructions.
Cons: It weighs 2 oz more than an Ipod, but for 150 dollars less I don't care. Another reviewer said it felt flimsy I don't think its flimsy at all... He just loves his Ipod

Total Bargain
Pros: A total bargain, this product is comparable to the mother of them all, the ipod. Only much much cheaper (DJ itself) as well as the accesories. Very long battery life.
Cons: Cannot be personalized (ipod certainly can) and it does not have any extras included in the ipod such as games, etc. Still second best to the ipod.

New User System is a good value
Pros: I like the musicMatch. It allows me to play music from my PC through my stereo all day and download songs I like. The DJ is new to me but feels nice and sturdy in my hands. Has great sound but could have come with better quality earbuds for the price.

small, light, affordable, and easy to use
Pros: gread deal compared to the ipod: 5 more gigs for $50 less ($100 less for me). Very easy to use, the scroll wheel works great, and works well as a portable storage device-drag and drop

Pros: Great feature to price ratio, Large Storage (256 mb..how bout 15 gb!), Dell name (i.e. quality, research/development, support, warranty, PRICE), easy intuitive interface, sound quality (check specs!), ability to store data files, usb 2.0, nicely backlit,
Cons: No firewire (what I have on my Dell notebook), nothing I've seen about upgradable firmware, 1ST generation, wrapped around musicMatch, odd carrying case

Battery Life Envy

It's freaking huge
Pros: Dell is a large reliable company. Good price/GB ratio.
Cons: It's 35% heavier than the iRiver iHP-120. That's going to make it feel like a lead weight in your pocket. Not much of a protable. I'd wait for Dell to come up with something sleeker.

Prejudgement based on hype
Pros: Lower cost than the IPod. Looks great (in my opinion)
Cons: The only reason you Mac trolls are bashing the DJ is the same reason that you think Britney Spears is the world's greatest singer! It's all just media hype. Sure the IPod has more features, but in terms of price, the DJ is much better. Shelling out an e

This is one of the ugliest mp3 players I've ever seen.
Pros: It's got all the basic features of all the hard drive players being released right now.
Cons: It's got all the basic features of all the hard drive players being released right now. It's ugly, very ugly. You have to carry a DELL logo around with you wherever you go. It costs $100 more than a relatively stylish creative Nomad Zen.

Pros: I don't understand how so many people have tried this and it's such a horrible product. Dell hasn't shipped a single device yet!!! NOT ONE!

Whatever
Pros: The price. If you are looking for a HD player and are on a budget, than this is the choice for you.
Cons: This product falls very short of the bar Apple has set with the iPod. However, you have to pay a premium for the iPod. If you have the extra cash the iPod is a better value with better software. Much like their compuetrs.

Dell Offers Good Support!
Pros: Dell is very friendly when you return things!
Cons: Feels Like a Brick, Battery Life is less than my old iPod when in the Cold weather, What's the deal with that? 2 hours of play time while Snowboarding! I really don't see why this got editors choice, I made the mistake of believing them.

Dude, unfortunately you're getting a Dell
Pros: The price point's good. If this takes off, it'll put a bit of pressure on Apple to stay competitive. Battery life is commendable, too - far better than the iPod, which really doesn't manage the uptime Apple claims.
Cons: Next to the iPod, this is an unattractive kludge with limited capabilities. You really want iTunes compatibility and Apple's unparalleled form factor instead.

Don't diss it before you get it!
Pros: Solid build, nice batttery life, considerably cheaper than alternatives. Very good value for the money. Sounds pretty good although Musicmatch isn't the greatest thing around... (neither is itunes)
Cons: You get what you pay for, its less "fun" and there are less "gimmicky-gadgets" but if you can life without a lcd video screen or the mega capabilities of the rock solid iriver ihp, then the dell fits well...

Price a fraud - not cheaper than iPod
Pros: The price is cheaper.
Cons: Wait, it's not really that much cheaper. The 20 gb iPod ($399) comes with a cable dock. On special sale (30 bucks off), the Dell is $299 without the dock, which is 20 bucks. So $320 for the Dell. However, Musicmatch (the matched software) is 20 bucks m
