Dell followed Apple's example when entering the portable audio hardware market: Keep it simple and intuitive. The 20GB Dell Digital Jukebox DJ's strength is that it makes music playback simple and straightforward. We were impressed by its solid design, clean sound, and outstanding battery life, but it's the affordable price of this hard drive-based player that's the really big news: $299 for this 20GB model, or $249 for the 15GB version. The first thing we noticed about the DJ is how solid the unit feels to the touch. At 7.7 ounces, it's heavier than the iPod, but in combination with the device's compact frame (0.9 by 4.2 by 2.6 inches), the extra weight lends it a dense, solid feel that inspires confidence. The casing consists mainly of metal that's cool to the touch, with a barrel-style roller control in the approximate spot where Apple placed its much-lauded scrollwheel.

The DJ's carrying case obscures its display and controls, but the in-line remote helps remedy that. The buttons on the remote mirror the playback controls on the main unit.

Dell's roller control doesn't permit you to scroll through long song lists with the speed of the iPod, but it's functional and--like the rest of the controls--indicative of the solid build quality of this device. It's ensconced in an outward bulge in the casing, which prevents accidental song selection. Depressing it selects whatever's highlighted on the blue-backlit LCD (very similar to the one found on the Creative Zen NX). The roller control is flanked by five additional large buttons on the player's face, all of which are backlit and well spaced for large-fingered users. Four rubber protrusions on the underside of the device stop it from sliding on flat surfaces.

One of the DJ's biggest strengths is its ease of use, which renders the manual useless for all but the greenest of newbies. In conjunction with dedicated Menu and Back buttons, the extremely intuitive menu system--very similar to the iPod's--makes navigation effortless. If needless complexity irritates you, you'll enjoy this player's clean interface design.

Dell bundles an in-line remote control, which lacks a display but allows you to skip between songs and adjust the volume while the device is stowed away or riding on your hip with the included carrying case. The remote clips to bag straps or clothing, and it has a Hold switch for temporarily disabling its buttons (a sturdy, round slider on the main unit does the same for controls located there). You also get a USB 1.1/2.0 cord and an AC power adapter for charging the internal battery.
The DJ plays MP3 and WMA music, which you can browse by album, artist, genre, track, or playlist. You can also add any track or group of tracks to a separate on-the-fly playlist, without a computer. While connected, the DJ shows up as a removable drive in Windows, but that's good only for transferring data files to the device. For music, you have to use the included Musicmatch software. We wish you could load the device via Explorer, but at least the Musicmatch compatibility means you can transfer secure WMAs purchased from the Dell Music Store (a rebranded version of Musicmatch's service). To prevent piracy, songs cannot be uploaded from the DJ onto another computer.

An internal microphone on the side of the device records voice memos. In record mode, the display shows level meters that fluctuate with volume, but since there's no way to control the mike sensitivity, they're more for cosmetic purposes than for preventing recordings from being too soft or loud. Like MP3s or WMAs, voice recordings cannot be uploaded to a computer.

For adjusting sound, the DJ packs eight EQ presets, as well as a slick four-band graphical equalizer for customizing equalization. We like that the player has a healthy selection of Shuffle and Repeat modes but were annoyed by its inability to play albums in order, even with Shuffle deactivated. If you want your albums to play in the proper order, you'll either have to create individual playlists for them or add numbered prefixes to the tracks' titles. We found the player's sound to be clean and strong, an appraisal borne out by the specs: a 94dB signal-to-noise ratio and less than 0.1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion. The bundled headphones are passable, but we heard clearer highs and lows using our test 'phones.

The area in which the DJ truly rocks is battery life: an astounding 19.5 hours--significantly more than the 16 hours that Dell claims. Charging the unit fully with the AC adapter takes about 6 hours. You can also charge the unit using the USB 1.1/2.0 connection, but that takes longer, and it doesn't work if the battery has run down to less than 25 percent. But the one thing we don't like about the battery is that it's not removable. That leaves us keeping our fingers crossed and hoping the DJ won't suffer the same sort of power problems after long-term use that plagued early versions of the iPod and the Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen.

File transfers were 0.86MB per second over USB 1.1 and, as one would expect, a speedier 2.4MB per second over USB 2.0. This means you can fill the player's 20GB capacity (about 370 hours of music at 128Kps) in almost 7 hours over USB 1.1, or in about 2.3 hours if your computer has USB 2.0.

Everything You need in a music Player. Nothing more.

Pros: Battery Life! Durability! Easy to Use! Actual Buttons!

Cons: Little Bulky... But a lot less Bulky than that Big CD Case I used to lug around!

Review: I Used this Thing for a solid 4 years through College. It survived falls on my bike, Skateboard, Snowboard, Being buried in the snow a bit, etc. It still played me music at -8 Degrees F. I admire that in a product. Also, I loved that I could do a 1000 mile road trip and the battery would keep up THE WHOLE WAY! It is now over 7 years old and it still works like the day I got it. Can't be said of any other digital product I got 7 years ago. Not to mention this thing puts out a GREAT sound! Much stronger and fuller than the iPod somebody got for me for Christmas... Anyway, Its a great mp3 player. Still!

Had for 5 years and still working like a champ!

Pros: I have over 1600 songs stored in the device and still has half the storage left. Easy operation volume almost too much! Easy buttons and controls . Love the remote plug in to move between songs and adjust volume. Super durable.

Cons: A little heavy, sometimes sticks on certain songs, battery life only so so. The playlist option is a little confusing and not always easy or possible to add songs to. Only playlist 1 seems to work although manual says multiple. Has blown 8 headsets.

Review: Still using over my mp3 player on my motoq because I haven't found a headset wireless or hardwired that work well with my moto q. The female plug in has a weird configuration. So for just flat out working in the gym or yard or for jogging it still can't be beat with all the new technology. I am ordering various headsets for my motq q9c to see if it will finally be a second alternative i hate the wires at the gym

Decent MP3 player

Pros: battery life, search, durability, design, and mic.

Cons: software is unintuitive, menus are a little frustrating to navigate through, lacks FM tuner, no album art or modern features on newer devices

Review: This is a great, cheap, second mp3 player. You know, the one you use when you don't want your ipod stolen. I have had mine for ages, it has been dropped more than once, and it still is plugging away. Wish I could say the same about my ipod. If you are looking for a rugged mp3 player that won't get stolen, this is it.

Best of electronic ive ever bought

Pros: Easy to set up, all the buttons are very obvious, 15gb

Cons: there not made any more, buttons get mixed up sometimes.

Review: this thing is awesome, ive had it for about 3 years now, and i use it almost every day. The battery life is great, it will play twice as long as my sisters ipod, which is great because i dont have to worry about carrying around my charger. it also lasts much longer than any of my friends ipods, they always have problems with the harddrive in them, or they just stop working. but this thing has worked just like new for three years execpt for one thing which recently came up. sometimes when i push a button it will do another buttons function, for example if i press the pause button, it may think i pushed the skip button. but this is very minor since in seldomly happens, and started after i owned it for 2 1/2 years, and it probably has something to do with all the times its been dropped. Its very durable, ive dropped this thing hundreds of times and its never skipped a beat. Worst was when i dropped it off a ski lift, i found it about 3 min later covered in snow, i just wiped it off and it was just fine. Every one complains about the software, but i think i works just fine, but all i use it for is playing, storing, and transferring every thing to my dell.

Good while it lasted

Pros: Long battery life, easy downloads, a lot of songs!

Cons: Rather large, plain backround, froze up too often

Review: The Dell DJ 15 gb was my first and so far only mp3 player. I really liked it! The size didn't bother me too much, because I could still easily hold it in my hands while running. And the leather carrying case was a nice feature while riding bikes...I guess it would have just been more convient for it to be smaller.

The battery life is awesome! It seemed like I would never have to charge it...but of course I did occasionally. I like how you can create a playlist right on the mp3; but you have to put all the songs on there at once, you can go back and add them. But you can add more on the computer. It doesn't have all the other gadigs like "modern" mp3 such as photos, videos, FM radio...But isn't a mp3 player for listeing to your music...?

The main problem that I ran into was that it would freeze up sometimes, don't ask me why. But it was very easy to fix, just put a paper clip through the reset button. Don't worry, it won't erase your songs. Then the major problem that I had with this mp3 player was that the last time it froze up, and I restarted it, it didn't come back to the music. It went to a menu called "Rescue mode" and wouldn't go to the songs. In the end, there was hardisk problem, and I lost all 1000+ songs!!! Let's just say I was A LITTLE mad and disappointed. That's a lot of songs.

I talked to dell's customer service for 2.5 hours, they did everything they could trying to fix my mp3 before we knew it was a goner. Once they couldn't fix it, they offered me a discount on the Dell DJ 20gb!! At least their customer service was very helpful!

I would recommened buying maybe the newer version, they may have all these bugs out by then. But I would tell you to buy this mp3 if you got a really good price b/c my sister has one just as old as mine (3 yrs b4 RIP) and hers is still working fine.

Good for cost, not so for actual use.

Pros: Awesome battery life, quick charge, decent recordings

Cons: Bulky, buttons have problems, slow, no "Play all" feature.

Review: I recieved the Dell DJ 15GB as a Christmas gift in December 2005, and I was ecstatic. I knew I didn't want an iPod due to my friends all having many problems, as well as the cost, so instead I requested the dell dj. I immediately loaded all of my music onto it (about 11 GB total) and had no problems at all- until about 2 months later.

The bulk I dealt with, it's not very attractive, but hey, it held all my music, and it was all I could afford- beggers can't be choosers.

However, I started having problems with the ff, play, and rewind buttons. I would push FF, and the song would pause. If I pushed pause, the player would often freeze, or nothing would happen at all. I assumed it was just a small bug and figured I could deal with it.

Later I started having problems with the entire player lagging, and taking an unusually long time to skip tracks, or access menus. Power up was a pain, as it took sometimes up to a minute to even get started.

With all of these problems I was having, I think the fact that there was no option to simply "shuffle" all of the tracks was the biggest annoyance. With over 70 artists, having to go through and make a playlist for everything was incredibly irritating and time-consuming. Each time I added new music I had to individually add them to my playlist so I could enjoy all of my music.

To top all of this off, my player completely gave out on me in May, less than 6 months after purchase. Upon trying to power it up, a message was displayed informing me that the player-in short-couldn't power up. It gave me 4 options to try and fix the problem, and after trying all of them several times I recieved the same message repeatedly. "Hard Drive Failure". So, my hard drive crashed, and it was impossible to get anyone at Dell on the phone that could help me.

I don't recommend this player, unless you want a clunky, annoying problem for an mp3 player.
I'm going to purchase a Creative player. It's less space, but I've downsized my music folder anyhow, and their players are certainly more attractive.

Less than stellar

Pros: Cheap, easy to use, excellent battery life

Cons: Poor audio performance, weak hard drive, little too big for what it does, short lifespan.

Review: First, let me say I'm glad I've got this instead of an iPod.

Now, my first unit had to be replace (under warranty)after a short, 14 month life. I was very dissapointed when Dell sent me a refurbished unit (the new DJ-20 and DJ-30 were out) but I have stuck with it for the last 2 years.

Now (after the warranty expired, of course) I'm starting to have problems with my current unit. It has a tendency to freeze up, forcing me to give it a hard reset. The track forward button tends to pause the track instead of moving on to the next one, and overall, I am dissapointed in the lifespan of the unit.

I need something that will last longer.

Headphone jack port failure, constantly crashes

Pros: Covenient Recording, No iTunes store.

Cons: Headphone jack port failure, crashese once a day

Review: Bad: I got a year out of this Dell DJ before the headphone jack port slowly stopped working. I did use it a lot and had the usual wear and tear. Warranty is expired, so I'd have to replace myself. But the device crashes so often (especially with a length play list) that it's not worth the cost of the part. I had two

Good: Used the device to record my meetings, although playback was sketchy. Great battery life.

great while it lasted

Pros: cool features

Cons: died after 18 months

Review: this mp3 player died on me after 18 months of very mild use. it gave the well known "hard disk failure" screen. other than that, this was a great portable music player. it had plenty of storage space, a microphone, and easily navigable menus, but with only an 18 month life span, it wasnt worth it.

Hard Drive Failures!!!!

Pros: Capacity, useability

Cons: Freezes, Hard drive is Junk!!!, Poor Dell support

Review: I've had this unit for 1.5 years. Even though it was used sparingly the hard drive failed and Dell offers no repair solutions for this. In other words it's $300Cdn worth of junk after limited use. I'm very dissapointed that Dell doesn't offer any solutions to what seems like a common problem. This is awful!! Don't buy this or any other Dell product if this is how they stand behind their products.

A great iPod alternative- very simple and easy to use

Pros: Very easy to use, great sound, audio recorder a nice touch, very cheap

Cons: No FM tuner, freezes often, can't play music from DJ on computer, a bit outdated

Review: I bought my DJ in March of 2004 and fell in love with it immediately. At the time, it proved to be a great iPod alternative- it was cheaper because it held a little less, but worked better with Windows and had a voice recorder. I found it to be extremely durable as well- I've dropped it several times on various surfaces such as hardwood and pavement, and although there are noticeable dents and scratches in it, the player still works- admittedly, a bit slower, but works nonetheless.

There are a few setbacks, however: an FM tuner would be a handy addition. I've also found that it's gotten slower and slower and freezes more than it should with more use. Granted, I've dropped it and am using up almost the full 15 GB, but sometimes waiting for it to load can be a pain. The biggest drawback I've found is that when you hook it up to a computer, be it your own or someone elses', you can only transfer one way- from the computer to the player. You can't edit voice recordings on the computer, and you can't play them or other music on the computer either.

Overall, it is a bit outdated. If you're looking for more features (such as a colour screen, FM tuner, or even pictures), I might direct you to the Creative Zen MicroPhoto or Archos Gmini XS. However, for the casual music listener with a fairly large music library, this is definently the right player.

This is the crappiest player I have owned

Pros: Good battery life, good price

Cons: Too thick, buttons are a nuisance, freezes quite a bit, blue backlight and black text makes menus hard to read.

Review: This player sucks. I bought it when it first came out, thinking that I was beating the system by paying less for the same thing that an iPod could give you. Boy was I wrong. This player is terrible. It froze on me constantly, and I would have to wait for the battery to die to do anything with it. The thing is just not made well either. Within the first few months, lint, dust, and even a crumb of food got underneath my screen! The thing is extremely heavy, and it was a pain to use. The little rubber circles on the corners fell off, the roll wheel sucked, and it FROZE A LOT. I know that this product is not even made any more, but I just wanted to blow off some steam. I had it for a year, or should I say dealt with it for a year, and ended up buying an iPod anyway. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration, and get an iPod.

close to junk status

Pros: intuitive controls

Cons: terrible software

Review: I was sold on the low price and in staying within the Dell family (notebooks too), but after having had the DJ replaced 3x in over 2 years, I'll never buy another Dell product. MusicMatch is basically junk, unless you upgrade (at cost) to the better version, which, though better, is still NOT intuitive like i-tunes. Everything is a pain with the DJ, from storing data files to uploading music. The buttons on the DJ have to be pushed 2-3 times before they register - very frustrating. It also tends to lock up at least once a week. The DJ does have a long lasting battery though.

Product is crap!

Pros: Hold a lot of music, but if the hard drive crashes, it doesn't do much good, does it?

Cons: 1st unit hard drive failed and was replaced, 2nd unit also failed after very little use. Dell will not replace again and hard drive cannot be fixed.

I was Dell DJ before Dell DJ was cool.

Pros: Excellent battery life, creating playlists is a breeze, easy to use, load up, and organize. Of course, the price.

Cons: Mine crashes every now and then. Also, when I am using it when working out, it sometimes does this weird "skip" thing. Sometimes I'll hear a snip of the previous track that was playing.

Review: I have been addicted to my one and only Dell DJ for about 1.5 yrs. (Purchased in 11/2003) I've never called customer support, so I can't confirm all the complaints I've seen here. I've never had any trouble with any of the features that I use Musicmatch for. For all the MMJ haters, I suggest downloading the Dell DJ Explorer program from their website. Its a pretty smart trick - a Windows Explorersy kind of file manager for the DJ. With it, you do all of the necessary music management tasks lickety split, plus, you can upload from the Dell DJ to your computer. So all of you out there that complained about losing all of your music when your DJ failed, you have the option of backing it up on other media. Good idea anyway, you think?

Great Player - - But HUGE Problem

Pros: Great battery life, easy to use

Cons: Slightly bulky, massive design flaw...

Review: I've gone through two Dell DJ's. The first time, after a couple of months using it, the sound quality began declining to the point where I could almost hear no music at all. The problem was that the headphone jack had gotten worn out simply from plugging my headphones in and taking them out. No problem; it was under warranty, and I was sent a new one.
I've had the new one for almost a year, and the SAME THING happened. Only problem is that it's not under warranty any more, so I'm stuck with an mp3 player that works fine internally, but doesn't play music. Oh well. I just took it apart; I think the connection between the headphone jack portion of the player and the headphones gets worn out incredibly fast. Just don't unplug your headphones. EVER. It did however, work GREAT before this problem.

Pros: Good features, good battery life, voice recorder.

Cons: Kind of big, hard drive noises, sometimes stalls.

Review: This is a good player overall for the price. I purchased mine for $150. The ability to make playlists on the go is very convenient. Included headphones are bogus. Support from Dell is absolutely horrible. Voice recorder is surprisingly clear and has a pretty good level of volume. Click wheel does depress over time which is quite annoying. Headphone jack is stubborn and seems like it will break. I recommend this product even through its flaws

Pros: Easy-access, intuitive controls; crisp, clear sound with good volume; long-lasting battery; nice weight/feel; large screen; doesn't look like a remote control for a kitchen appliance.

Cons: Occasionally makes a sharp, static sound between tracks; occasionally repeats a song in shuffle mode before all songs are played; rubber feet can fall off.

Pros: I like the musicMatch. It allows me to play music from my PC through my stereo all day and download songs I like. The DJ is new to me but feels nice and sturdy in my hands. Has great sound but could have come with better quality earbuds for the price.

Cons: Could have included better quality earbuds. Non replaceable battery is a worry. The "playing albums in order" thing has not bugged me yet but I could see it getting annoying.

Cnet is up Dell's wazoo.

Cons: Dell is always advertising on Cnet. You think Cnet is unbiased? Think again.
