Insignia Pilot with Bluetooth (8GB)

"Best combination of features and price" on by fallingace
Pros: More features for less money than an ipod
Cons: Poor FM reception when using bluetooth
Summary: I can't believe this device doesn't get more love from cnet. This device has a nice set of features for an 8gb mp3 player and cost less than the 8GB ipod. This device has expandable memory (SD card), stereo bluetooth, a F.M. tuner, 2 headphone jacks, and a replaceable battery. Want to share music with your friends? No adapters needed here. Two people can simply plug in their headphones while a third can listen via stereo bluetooth. Bluetooth volume can be controlled independent of the plugged in headphones. Sound quality over my Motorola S9 stereo bluetooth headphones exceeds most earbuds that I have.
The biggest complaint I have about this device is the lack of FM reception when using bluetooth headphones. Only way to fix this is to plug in a set of earbuds to act as an antenna. Video playback could be smoother, but i will have to re-encode my music videos before i can pass final judgment.
Overall this is an excellent music player that cannot be beat for anywhere near the price. -
"Surprised it took this long to be reviewed!" on by JWilliams06
Pros: Price, Removable Battery, Bluetooth, Screen, additional mem thru SD card.
Cons: "Insignia" stigma, trade off of screen size and phyical dimensions
Summary: Here on Dec. 19, this Insignia Pilot has finally been reviewed. I'm completely surprised that this item has taken this long to make the rounds here on CNET.com. I must say that I do not own this model, but from what I've seen at the Best Buy stores, after extensive testing -- seems like BB has a terrific item on their hands.
Easy, drag & drop interface, file list view, expandable memory to 16GB flash with a Secure Digital High Capacity SDHC disk. What other media player offers this kind of expandability aside from Sandisk's Sansa.
For the low price of $150, this thing has the Apple iPod, Microsoft Zune and others beat in terms of value.... and to those looking for a new MP3 player for the holidays - with expandability options, then the Insignia Pilot 4 or 8 GB model should be on your list.
The only downside is that player accessories is pretty much non-existent, but the same is true for the Zune, and Sansa players. But probably even more so because this is strictly a Best Buy brand -- the only thing available is an workout armband through DLO though.
Still, all in all - spec wise and for the dollar - excellent value. -
"Great Value with a multitude of features" on by bethdo97
Pros: All the functionality one could hope for - music, video, FM tuner, Bluetooth, Photos at a price where I don't mind buying it for my teenagers. Expandable memory with SD card so i can save all I want
Cons: Advertised to be ITune compatible but can't figure out how
Summary: Great value for the money. As an entry level MP3 player for my teenager kids it was a great buy. My kids were less than thrilled at first, because the name was not the same as the one carried by the friends, but after checking it out for a few hours, they were pleasantly surprised that mom had bought a mp3/video player comparable to their friends ipods but with more features and a much lower price

"Look ma, no wires!" on by icon1976
Pros: Simple interface, simple to add music-since I have my music organized in Windows, Bluetooth is awesome with good range, FM radio allows me to listen to PRI and sports events, universal mini-USB cable works with other devices, low cost.
Cons: The dial wheel does feel a little cheap, but who cares at these prices. The sound quality with the headphones seemed weak, but my bluetooth headphones are amplified so no problem.
Summary: I went to the park today and can't believe that everybody is still using wired headphones! Ever since my giant 3 battery Walkman in the 80s I feel like that was the biggest downfall while doing physical activities like running or working. I like the size of the device and that I can add a SD memory card. I've even thought about just having a couple of cheap 8GB cards and swap although I haven't checked to see how practical that would be. I am relieved to not feel like I have to "perfect" my music collection as I did with Itunes, but I hope making a playlist will be as simple. On my 30gb Ipod classic I added a bluetooth device which plugged into the docking port and the reception sucked! It was always clicking in and out as it was bumped and had no range. With this device, when I am in range I have no glitches and the range is at least tripled to around 30 feet. I guess Ipod is waiting to bring out their bluetooth stock but for me the Pilot has beat them to the punch. I love wireless!
