"Attractive and loaded but needs work"

loaded with many features
line-in recording
SD expansion
The price! $59 (thank you Wal-Mart!)Cons: Cheap plastic scratches easily
Summary: The iriver is a pretty package whatever color you get it in. I bought this because I was looking for a MP3 player loaded with features. the MP3 playback was ok at best. I'm no audiophile so I cannot judge audio quality very well except theres always a very minor hiss noise in the background. Almost unnoticeable but still there. Theres an annoying feature though with the buttons. Instead of responding to button command instantly when the screen back light is off. The buttons will only respond when the back light is on, otherwise you have to end up pressing the button at least two-three times to activate the light; to get it to work. This is also another issue with the UI. it's a bit slow and laggy when scrolling through menus, startup takes about 20 seconds but shutdown is quick.
screen viewing angle is so-so
lag-erific user interface
freezes randomly at times
I do like the in-line recording feature the most. I have a vinyl LP collection and was able to easily "rip" songs onto the player quickly. The recording quality maxes out at 192kb so dont expect CD quality sound for other applications.
The picture viewer is a no hassle deal, and I bought this because it supports more picture formats than just JPEG. The video player is OK too but the format it supports is a little finicky. To "properly" watch your vids on it, you have to convert them via the iriver converter software which is yet again, so-so. Playback is smooth and clear but the viewing angle is restricted especially when viewing the player slightly to the left. I haven't tried out the text viewer because, I dont need to carry around text files and neither the micro SD expandability. It's good to know thats there for future expansion. The FM radio has good clear sound though be sure to have good headphones as they're the antenna for the radio. The earbuds that came with this really sucked and they received poor reception. Go buy yourself a good pair afterwards.
Lastly the biggest issue I had to deal with are the freeze ups. They just randomly happen and aren't predictable. I found out properly organizing, naming and tagging your files seems to reduce this issue.
If you need a player that does it all, and aren't too picky about the details the E100 will do you fine. I have been satisfied with the features and especially the price, $59 at WalMart.com.
If you want a high quality long lasting player try considering something else.
