"FM Radio is the stellar feature" on by gnarwhale
Pros: FM, compact size, AA Battery
Cons: Advanced navigation is hard to learn
Summary: I bought the 790 256Mb on the heels of PC Mag's Editors' Choice award to the predecessor model 390. I have been quite happy with great sound quality. I commute 3 hour / day by bus and with this unit I can listen to uploaded music, FM, and language lessons. The small amount of storage still allows for around 8 long CD's, and I delete the least desirable songs after a while and add new music. FM is decent while blasting down Hwy 101 to SF, as good as my car reception. Equilizer has great profiles (rock, metal, classical). Limited storage may be seen as a con by some, but it forces management of what you really want to listen to more than once. The only con is that one button can start recording from FM, almost always by accident instead of intentional.
If you want to 'shuffle' you can, but is that how you want to play your music?
The iRiver software works well in Windows XP for uploading and managing contents on the player. -
"Outstanding in most ways" on
Pros: Astounding battery life from one AA. Excellent sound quality. Capable of high volumes. Durable, compact, nice 'phones. Updated firmware fixes funky shuffle mix and other little glitches. Uploads are very fast. Major controls easy to use.
Cons: Some of the lesser controls are a little non-intuitive. Screen icons very difficult to discern. Headphone cord a little too short. Would be nice if Windows recognized without using iRiver software.

"Good but with issues" on
Pros: Small, durable, sweat resistent.
Cons: USB door wont stay closed. Battery cover not secure, lost it in a week. Neck strap needs to be non absorbant material for gym folks. Armband is a joke. Too many peices, chinsy and too small.

"Feature rich and useful!" on
Pros: This player sports some rather enticing features. Nice EQ flexibility, WMA and OGG support, FM tuner, sleep timer, alarm, clock, but most importantly in-line MP# encoding. This MP3 player/recorder has made my mini-disc recorder obsolete. Now, I was a l
Cons: The buttons and plastic feel a tad cheap... but treat it nice folks, this is sensitive electronic equipment. No XP auto detection.

"Great looks poor function design" on
Pros: Form factor is excellent
Cons: On off switch broke after four months of modest use. IRiver will not respond to means for repair. One dead piece of $150.00 equipment
