"Great while it worked." on by kaveets
Pros: Audiophile quality sound. Small (for a CD player). Plays MP3s.
Cons: Expensive. Get's stuck in the middle of a song. iRiver has no out-of-warranty repair.
Summary: Lossy formats like MP3 are great for carrying around a lot of music on a small player, and they sound pretty good on most headphones. But I wanted a portable to sound punchy and lifelike when connected to a stereo system or really good pair of headphones, so I needed something that played CDs. When I read that the iRiver SlimX CD player was highly recommended by Headphones.com, I bought one. I was not disappointed. The sound is clear, detailed and dynamic with a transparency not usually associated with portable CD players. Plus, it had the added bonus of playing MP3s burned to a CD. That's the good news. Now for the bad. About a year after I bought it (of course right after the warranty ran out), it began stopping in the middle of a song. At first it only did this occasionally, but after a few months, it got stuck more often until now it won't even play through a song. I emailed iRiver customer support requesting the cost to have it repaired. After two weeks I got a response back that they do not repair out-of-warranty units. I don't consider a $100 player to be a throwaway, especially after little more than a year. Given the number of reviewers reporting problems with these players, iRiver will need to provide support after the warranty period before I would ever consider purchasing another product from them. Which is really a shame since this is such a great sounding player.

"I love it but I don't use it as an mp3 player" on by butterflygrl12
Pros: SUPER small, sleek, easy to use, lots of features, sound quality good
Cons: remote looks cheap, delicate, fm tuner not that great
Summary: Well I've had this cd/mp3 player for a couple years now actually, I think I got it when it first came out. I absolutely LOVE the size of it, it's so tiny and everybody who sees it automatically loves it. It looks nice also but it scratches after awhile but it's okay if you leave it in the cloth case they provide you.
You're basically losing almost all of the features if you lose the remote so it's very important. The clip's weird and the remote looks like cheap plastic, but I was okay with that.
I've dropped it a couple times and the play button doesn't work on the remote but I just use it on the actual player anyway so it doesn't matter. I charge it overnight and discharge it sometimes because it gives you that option. And I'm still satisfied with it but I don't use it for mp3 discs anyway, but as a CD player it's great. -

"seriously crappy" on
Pros: well u get to play mp3's on a data-burned disk, and u get a radio.
Cons: it's really not worth it. mp3 players like this are worth 30-40 from the more reliable name brands like panasonic. it's blue display is an eye-sore, and the entire thing is useless after the remote gets shot. stay away.

"Best mp3 cd player period!" on
Pros: Backlight, mp3 and wma, great fm tuner, custom equilizer, firmware updateable, It has read every data disk I ever put in it, mp3 cds are not as convenient as a dedicated mp3 player, but they have a better value if you have gigs of music and cannot afford
Cons: small screen and slow bootup.
