"Solid Player, good features with a few drawbacks"

by bzickuhr on November 26, 2008

Pros: Wide file type support, good sound, interfaces with WMP 11 and Rhapsody well.

Cons: Slow interface, buttons must be clicked multiple times, fairly short battery life, song/artist/album lists are not sorted.

Summary: First off, I use the player strictly for music and radio, so I have no opinion on the video side of the player. I also stick to WMP playlists, so I don't generally try to find a song via the interface.

I have an old 512MB U10, and have always liked the iriver click interface. The U10 was a lot more solid, though. The lplayer often requires two or more clicks to register.

I'm converting my CD library to FLAC on my home server, so having the FLAC support was one of my main decision factors for getting the lplayer. The 8GB capacity is great too.

Sound is good to excellent. There are plenty of different EQ's to choose from. The player is lightweight and you hardly know it's there.

iRiver supplies two different connection types- the MTP for direct interface with WMP (and Rhapsody) and straight ahead MSC(UMS) to treat it as a USB drive. Switching between the two requires the unit to reformat and you lose all songs & playlists.

The battery seems to be losing steam rather quickly. The only gauge for battery status is the small picture on the screen, so it's not really clear how much charge is left. But after only a few hours of listening to radio or music, the icon seems to be down by 1/2.

I'd like to see more attention paid to the display themes - or the lack thereof - and to the user interface in general. The U10 had a much better interface in general, and seemed to respond to clicks much faster.

Bottom line - an excellent no-frills player with good sound and excellent interface with Windows Media Player 11 & Rhapsody playlists. The menu interface needs a little patience, and if you're trying to find a particular song in 8GB of music, it's going to take a while.
