"A non-expensive sophisticated sound tool and storage device that takes time to love and respect."
Pros: 1.Sounds great; versatile(equalizer) 2. compact 3.Lots of features/functions (see below) 4.thorough misc. options 5. Large easy read LCD screen 6. rechargeable
Cons: 1.not very user friendly 2.Capacity maxed at 1.5 gigs 3.USB cable required 3. ear buds too big 4. nonremoveable battery 5.USB 1.1 (<<<USB 2.0 high speed) 6. No in-line 7.No (on/off/on) midplay resume.
Summary: If you've already purchased this product check out my notes at the bottom of this review.
I purchased LDP-600 512mb for $125 total via ZIPZOOMFLY. Even though this is my first and only Digital music player, I would recommend it over any mainstream IPOD models. First of all, the sound is as good or better. Second, it's an all in one multifunctional sound device. Basically everything you need to use its abilities are built-in(except the USB to USB mini (5 pin) cable that is needed to both recharge and move files). Otherwise, all you need to carry is the unit and headphones.
This is the LAYOUT:
-black plastic with rubbery ends(512mb model)
-3.5"x1.5"X.66"
-2.4 g...pretty light
-On the long/thin sides there are (top)two sturdy bidirectional spring-toggle switches for main navigation/volume control and (bottom)3 other buttons for mode selection (press duration sensitive). The back has dedicated hold and FM transmitter sensitivity switches.
-built-in mic(little slit) on same end w/ headphone jack and lanyard attachment.
-other end has USB mini port and the SD/MMC slot(with attached rubber caps)
LCD SCREEN-.9"X.8" (large)file#/totalfile#,mode icons,battery meter 4 bars,time display,filescroll,volume,speed, 7 switchable colors(indigo best for eyes)...
These are many features I enjoy about LExar LDP-600 in descending order. However, some require specific setup for -->optimum performance. NOTE: IPOD doesn't have anything built-in except much larger space and a uniue touch wheel but weighs alot more. Everything else is accessorized($$$ & space). Other compact MP3 players(CREATIVE out now also have built-in capabilities.
1.Rechargeable Li-ion (14 hrs) via USB(5 pin) mini only. BUT Non-removeable. No back up/replacement possible I think. I don't know what will happen once the battery life has totally crapped out in a few years. By then I will upgrade anyway
2.FM TRANSMITTER- Huge bonus for price range. very handy (think of possibilities). Play on any radio. battery drain 15%-->reception depends on open frequency/length of antennaes. use headphones rather than provided antennae, find most staticky frequency to broadcast. I could get good reception in whole 2 story house. 3 sensitivity setting...I don't understand how it works/differs.
3.VOICE RECORDER-3 quality settings, 32(mono),64,96(stereo) bitrate. Good sound regardless. Very sensitive mic may pick up air too loudly. Can double as a stand alone mic.
4.FM tuner with sensitivty modes/autoscan/autopreset/20 presets-Not the best. -->good local stations, can't move too much, susceptible to interference, can be very clear or crappy.
5.Random on play- semi-shuffle but tends to stay in same order and has no resume. Random off DOES have resume however!
6. MMC/SD expandable +1 gig(but treats as completely separate drive...)
7. FM recorder- Useful. Not bad quality.
8. 5 band verstaile equalizer(7 preset,1user)-->lower middle F and increase highs, slightly increase lows) for crisper sound
9. Repeat A-B section- Continuous or single repeat. Great for learning.
10. dedicated Hold switch(on back)- locks unit so buttons/power do not accidentally get pressed while in pockt/bag.
11. MISC.- easy directory navigtion, sleep mode, power save, ID3 tag option, 4 play ranges: one file, folder, all folders, or bookmarked, bookmark(like playlist but cannot save multiple playlists),alternate btwn 7 LED backlight colors(indigo/green best for eyes), contrast control, delete, format, low format(slow complete reset),speed control(75-135%), fast forward/rewind/pause,
12. Ability to combine features. Play any recordings(FM or voice) on radio.
Finally, the accessories:
1.Simple, clear plastic case- primarily protects LCD screen(which sticks out a little) and opens only to mic and the two toggle switches.
2. 1/8" jack mini extendable antennae- cute.only for broadcasting to radio directly next to. Otherwise use headphones.
3.long black nylon lanyard-too simple. Can be worn on neck, dangles retardadly about. I personally loop it around my belt loop and use like a chain wallet. I stick it in my pant or shirt pocket w/ "hold" on when necessary.
4.fold out manual- piece of crap, too simplified directions. Must see online user guide for actual help.
5.senheisser 400mx ear buds with soft covers- provides excellent sound, BUT are too big/uncomfortable ie with the covers, and covers tend to fall off easily. I lost 1 the first week. Actually more comfortable w/o the covers anyway.
Notes: (will be updated)
1- Keep atleast one song directly in the drive(not in folder). This keeps a song available in HOME(like an intro theme song). And you won't have trouble selecting play range modes.
2-freezes only if you bash random buttons
3-read other reviewsUpdated
There IS midplay resume for "random off" play mode. But it remains that "random on" mode always defaults to the beginning of same song/song order, until you rearrange songs.

The LDP-600 should accept 2GB SD cards, since Lexar's LDP-200 does. Probably 4GB SD will work as well, but they aren't even out yet. Unlikely that Lexar would intentionally limit the size of card usable with the player. If they say it only works with cards up to a gig it is more likely that they just haven't thoroughly tested it with the larger capacity cards.
