"Best bang for your buck out there."

by JayFromDetroit on March 6, 2005

    Pros: Light, Expandable, Options!!

Cons: Charges only via USB, FM Transmitter weak.

Summary: I spent a long long time deciding on an MP3 player. I was initially drawn to the hard disc based players due to the sheer volume of storage space. But most of them are heavy, and anytime you have anything based in moving parts, you always have to worry about wear and tear. So in the end I decided a flash memory based player was best, and I spent more time researching all the ones I could find. What I did know is that I wanted one that was expandable, so I could add memory to it. I also knew I wanted one with an FM tuner, and I was also seeking a player with a voice recorder. After viewing players made by Creative, Rio, and a slew of others I found what I was looking for in this Lexar unit.

Both the 256 and the 512 models will support SD card upgrades up to one gig, so right there your tripling your space at least. I got a deal when I bought a Lexar 1Gig card and am now sporting 1512mb of space.

The FM Tuner is nice, but I have found on occasion it fades out inside office buildings. It has a fast autosearch for channels and lots of presets.

The voice recorder is incredible.. the microphone is so sensitive I can easily record voices with the unit tucked in my pocket.

The FM Transmitter sucks. Its so weak, that unless you are placing the unit on top of the antenna of the stereo you're outputting to, theres static enough to make listening to it annoying. Thats fine for me, however, as I had already bought a nice FM Transmitter from C. Crane that easily covers an area the size of my house. I didnt need it, but I'll admit it was a nice option.

I'm slightly bummed that it only charges by USB cable. The cable is standard, so chances are you have more then one laying around from a PDA or a digital camera. I never have trouble finding one in the office, which is nice. Belkin sells a cigarrette lighter plug to usb adapter, I'm sure I'll end up buying it to charge this in the car. Initial charge time was 150 minutes, all subsequent charges take between 60 and 90 minutes. For this charge time you'll get 14 or 15 hours play time.

The rocker switches for song and volume are tight and hard to break, this is a good thing. It seems with the 3 popular rio players, if you even look at the switches wrong they'll break.

You can change the color of the LED background, there are 7 choices available. Unique.

The unit comes with a strap to keep the player around your neck. I'll never use it. I actually hoped there was an armband for it, but no such luck. I'll have to fashion something.

All in all, the best bang for your buck out there in Flash-Based MP3 players.
    Updated
And I forgot to add theres an EQ with 5 or 6 presets and a user defined option.
