"Feature packed, tiny mp3 player."
Pros: Tiny, rechargeable, drag-drop support, FM radio.
Cons: No belt clip. Proprietary USB cable
Summary: I was looking for a small flash based MP3 player to use mainly for the gym. When I saw this in one of the gadget sites, I didn't think it would come to the State side. But, out of all places, when Walmart decided to carry this item, I pulled the trigger and bought it. It took Walmart about 3 days to process the order and ship from California.
The pictures do not do justice on how small this player is. Here are some pros and cons.
PROS:
- Tiny and light.
- Rechargeable. It's supposed play time is 10 hours from 3 hours charge. Rechargeable was a requirement when I was shopping for a flash based player, since I didn't want to deal with buying batteries and changing them.
- Screen. For less than the iPod shuffle, you get OLED screen. It shows pretty much all the information you'd need, including song name. (I don't think it has ID3 support though). Using this small screen, you can even browse through folder structure. You can set the scroll speed, which comes in handy due to its small screen size.
- Drag-and-Drop support. On Windows XP, no drivers were needed, and it showed up as USB Mass Storage device. I started creating folders and putting MP3s via Windows Explorer. You can also store other types of files.
- Supports WMA DRM. Some "generic" MP3 players do not support DRM, but this one does. I don't think it supports subscription based DRM yet, but may be in the future with firmware update. But I haven't tried playing WMA DRM songs yet.
- 1 GB space. They also have 512 MB version.
- FM Radio. It works great at home and outdoors, but in the office, it doesn't work well, which is understandable given none of the FM radios I tried in the office works well.
- Voice Recording. It comes in handy when making quick reminders.
- "Wow" factor. This isn't really a feature, but everyone I show this to are amazed by it.
CONS:
- No belt clip. It comes with a necklace style headphones, but it's bothersome when running. I used a keyring to make a belt clip. Sometimes I just hold it in my hand while I'm running, because it's so small.
- Proprietary USB cable. The same cable and plug is also used to recharge the player. It would've been nice if it had a sliding USB plug, even if it made it slightly bigger, then it would've replaced my USB thumb drive as well. Even if it had one of those smaller standard USB plugs, that would've been a plus, since many of my friends have those cables now.
- Button placement. I wish the buttons were separated. I think they tried to follow iPod style, so the navigation controls and volume controls are in one circular plastic button.
Other features:
- SRS, TruBass, Record gain setting (though too much will distort the FM recording), A-B and other repeat modes, EQ (including one user setting).
- FM Recording. But you can't schedule time to record. Perhaps they can add it with future firmware update, since it does have a clock.
