The silver-and-blue SV-MP35V doesn't take up much space. It measures just 2.4 by 1.7 by 0.9 inches and weighs 1.6 ounces (with battery). Otherwise, there's not much good news to report on its design and interface. The rudimentary blue-backlit screen displays only the song title; artist information is nil. In addition, there's no way to display a list of songs loaded on the player or even within a playlist. In the "needlessly difficult" category, adjusting the contrast is a complicated and bizarre affair. You first flip the Hold switch to the lock position--already this doesn't make sense. Then, while pressing and holding the Mode button with one finger, use another finger to press the volume buttons to increase or decrease the contrast. Why this function isn't one of the menu options is anyone's guess.
As with most flash players, you must press and briefly hold the SV-MP35V's play/fast-forward/rewind jog wheel to turn the device on. But you have to hold it for a ridiculous 10 or (often) more seconds to shut it off. And make sure you put the player on Pause first--if you try to shut down the device while a song is playing, you'll sit there forever pressing the button to no avail.
The MP35V plays MP3 and unprotected WMA files, which you transfer to the device through Windows Explorer (Windows 98 users will have to install drivers from the included CD-ROM). You can move folders to the MP35V, and the player will treat them as playlists, but there's no way to create playlists or otherwise bookmark tracks on the device itself. The playback options are conspicuously thin. After holding the Mode button, you flip the jog wheel to select one of the following choices: Play, which adjusts random and repeat settings; Erase; Sound, for adjusting EQ settings; and Info, which actually allows you to see the artist and encoding information.
You get the usual random and repeat options, but there's no setting for simultaneous random and repeat. The device features five EQ presets (Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic, and Pop), and you can set the bass and treble levels in increments of four.
