Philips GoGear Key014 review (256MB)

Another problem lies with the rechargeable battery, which takes about 4.5 hours to fully charge (and requires your computer to be on, because it charges via USB) but lasts only 6.6 hours. An included external battery pack houses a disposable AAA battery and adds about 7 hours of play time, giving the GoGear respectable overall life, but it also adds more bulk and weight to the player, not something you want when it's dangling from your neck.

The GoGear supports drag-and-drop file management, or you can use the included Musicmatch Jukebox software. Unfortunately, protected WMA files aren't supported by the player. The USB 1.1 interface affords decent file-transfer performance at 0.71MB per second.

When all is said and done, sound quality is at least as important as everything else. With its 80dB signal-to-noise ratio (the better players hit 90dB), the GoGear sounds OK--not bad but not great. Overall, the player is uninspiring.
