Digital Networks continues its assault on the MP3 player market with the release of the 5GB Rio Carbon MP3 player. Attempting to steal some of the Apple iPod Mini's thunder, the stylish Carbon packs an additional gigabyte of storage into its polished, slender case. Factor in the price of $249 (identical to that of the Mini), a battery that lasts 20 hours, and some extras, and you have a legitimate alternative to the colorful Mini. But the Carbon isn't perfect. It is missing some features found in other players in its class, such as an FM tuner. Still, the Carbon is one of the best choices if you want a high-capacity player in a small package that is compatible with Windows Media-based online music stores and subscription services such as Napster To Go. The Carbon series is finally compatible with the latter, thanks to a new free firmware update.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more. Thanks in part to the iPod Mini's frenzied popularity in early 2004, Digital Networks pulled the plug on its planned 4GB model, the Nitrus. In retrospect, that was a good move because the juiced-up Rio Carbon is a far better product.

The Carbon is the first player on the market to utilize Seagate's new 5GB mini hard drive, which means the Rio packs one more gigabyte (which translates to about 250 more songs) than the iPod Mini but manages to pack everything into a body that's lighter, shorter, and thinner (on the average) than that of its Apple counterpart. The stylish body measures 2.5 by 3.3 by 0.6 inches, weighs 3.2 ounces, and is similar in shape to the 1.5GB Rio Nitrus. Its smooth, rounded edges and gradually tapering thickness feel at home in the hand, and the player slips invisibly into almost any pocket.

The bottom half of the device has a gray, rubberized edge that serves as a shock protector as well as a functional grip, but the rest of the unit is encased in bright silver and plastic-coated metal that is durable and looks great. The first run of Carbons had a design flaw wherein any pair of headphones with a metallic ring around the base of its plug caused a short circuit, resulting in annoying static. Rio has since corrected the problem in newer Carbon models. The new Pearl version of the player, introduced at CES 2005, isn't affected.

Instead of the red, thumb-joint-wrecking joystick found on the Nitrus, the Carbon's navigation and playback controller is a four-way pad with a raised Select button in the middle. In addition to this vast improvement, the Carbon features cool, red backlighting behind the buttons and the logo. On the upper-right corner, you'll find an improved selectable jog wheel that controls volume and acts as a secondary menu navigation control. Directly below the wheel is the Menu button. Meanwhile, the Carbon's topside features a headphone jack, a USB port, and the power button. Note the absence of a Hold switch--the function is inconveniently buried in the menu.

The final two key characteristics are the 1.25-inch backlit display and an integrated microphone designed for recording voice memos. Despite its diminutive size, the sharp, monochrome LCD shows lots of relevant info in a sensible manner. The Carbon's overall design deserves praise for its simplicity, its small size, and its recognizable improvements over its Nitrus-based design origins.

In addition to the earbuds, the player ships with a nondescript carrying case, a wall-wart power adapter that connects to the Carbon via an included USB cable, a software disk, and a Quick Start guide. The carrying case serves as a protector only, as it restricts access to the LCD and the primary buttons. It's also difficult to remove the Carbon from its case.

The Rio Carbon plays MP3s and WMA (including secure WMAs), as well as Audible files for all of you virtual bookworms. Unlike the larger and more complicated Rio Karma, it does not support OGG or FLAC. The Carbon is also a handy voice-recorder, complete with mic-level meter, that captures audio as WAV files through its decent microphone. It is also an ideal way to store and carry essential data files.

The Carbon's strength is its simplicity--it's the player for those who just want to listen to music. Part of this strength is derived from the clean, mature onscreen interface. The main menu includes: Play Music, Bookmarks, Settings, Voice Recorder, Recordings and Stopwatch (lest we forget to mention, it's a stopwatch, too). Diving into menu folders is an in-and-out affair, but the interface transitions are quick and tidy. Selecting the Play Music category takes you to a wealth of options, including Play All, Album, Artist, Genre, Track, Year, New Music, Playlist, Spoken Word, and Recordings. Menu highlights include a five-band custom EQ, simple voice recording, and a nifty bookmarking feature that not only takes you instantly back to the same place in a song but also remembers the player's settings. In fact, you can easily bookmark songs by pressing and holding the Select button and choosing one of nine bookmark spaces.

There's lots of motion onscreen, with scrolling song info, a track position bar, and time elapsed. It's kind of nice, especially with the soothing backlighting turned on, then slowly fading to off. There's also a View mode that displays bit rate, codec, copyright protection, and size, as well as the always-handy date and time. The Carbon even has a customizable Lock setting, meaning you can program some functions--such as volume--to work even when the software Hold function is on.

Software and drivers aren't an issue. Rio supplies its own much-improved Rio Music Manager, but the Carbon is also compatible with Windows Media Player 10.0 and Apple iTunes, although the latter does require a plug-in. And it works with any of the music services that rely on WMA, such as Napster, MSN Music, Wal-Mart, and others. The Carbon takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver a better user experience. It can autosync with Windows Media Player 10.0 and Rio Music, a useful feature if you have more than 5GB of music. The Carbon series is finally compatible with Windows DRM 10.0 (also known as Janus), which allows the player to store and play back songs downloaded from subscription services such as Napster To Go and Rhapsody To Go. This greatly enhances the appeal of this already tight player.

The Rio Carbon isn't perfect, however--it's missing several features found on larger players. There's no FM tuner, no line-in recording, and no hardware Hold button. The interface has a few quirks too. Most notably, there's no way to create a playlist while on the go, an especially important feature on high-capacity players such as the Carbon. During testing, we also found that, if you're using the jog wheel when selecting menu options, you'll get kicked out of the menu and back into the Player mode--a minor annoyance when you are surfing the menus.

One of the Rio Carbon's strongest selling points is its phenomenal battery life. At slightly more than 20 hours, it lasts twice as long as the Apple iPod Mini. The Carbon's lithium-ion battery is charged via USB.

Sound quality also rates up there, with punchy, hiss-free sound. The Carbon could be louder, as we were only able to crank it up using the custom EQ. While the included earbuds are termed high quality, the Carbon deserves to be listened to on bigger headphones. Owners of the first Carbon run should just make sure their headphones do not have the aforementioned metallic ring around the base of the plug, which can result in static (see Design). Yes, there is a low-tech fix for this problem. But coming from an otherwise polished player, it's a shame that Rio didn't catch this before the unit went into production. Transfer time over USB 2.0 was an acceptable 2MB per second.

Excellent in almost every way.

Pros: Extremely long battery life. Good clear sound. Plays WMA. Intuitive controls. Clear screen. Good volume. Controls can be locked. In addition to the music player it has a voice recorder and oddly enough a stopwatch.

Cons: by today's standards the memory size is a bit small.

Review: I have had one of these for years and it has always been reliable and has got an amazingly l0ng battery life. It has doesn't have many add-ons or special features that the modern mp3 players have but if you are looking for something sturdy to play your music then this is definitely the best I have seen.

Rio the company doesn't exist any more so it may be hard to find this mp3 player but if you chance upon it on ebay or something its well worth getting.

A Hidden Gem

Pros: Easy to use software and music downloading to the unit,Cheap, good design, Relitivly large storage capicty

Cons: sometimes slow, difficult play list maker, some menu problems, old

Review: I,ve had the rio for about tree years now it still works great, its easy to load songs onto the unit and the software it comes with is easy and could be useful. Sound quality good ( but i personally have nothing to compare it too its the only mp3 player ive owned and have not had a good comparason to any other player)with good headphones. However the menu is a little annoying playlists and song selection in particular. But its time for me to move on im planing on trying to sell it on ebay. but so if your looking to buy it drop me a line and we cn chat.

Okay mp3 player

Pros: Great battery life, nice with bookmarking

Cons: customer service lacking, scratches too easily

Review: The battery life and bookmarking keep it above average, but it only took about 2 week for the first scratch in mine, due to the bad carrying case. Battery life sast forever while turned, but doesnt make up for the other short comings.

AFter 6 month review.....

Pros: battery life

Cons: plastic pieces break

Review: Most of these reviews were written after a week or so of having this MP3 player. If you notice the on,off and volume switches on the top, they are plastic. It looks like metal but they are not. You can only bend or press plastic too many times before it breaks off. I called the company about this and they wanted $99 to fix it. Anyone knows you can't press on a plastic piece over and over again. They told me tough luck.

Very very fragile

Pros: nice sound

Cons: breaks easily

Review: We received this as a gift and it took only a few days for it to break. While searching the various forums, we discovered many folks are having trouble with the volume wheel breaking. Ours broke and now it won't even power on. We're new to mp3 players but having owned cell phones and digital cameras, I would have expected this device to be a little more resilient and less fragile.

It was nice while it lasted though.

This is a good mp3 player without a doubt

Pros: GREAT battery life and sound

Cons: No external hold button

Review: I say this is a good mp3 player and I'm not saying this from excitement of just getting it and paying only about $130 with the shipping. I had this mp3 player for about a year now and the sound and battery is still good. This mp3 delivers everything you need, except for a few minor flaws like there is no hold button and I can't create a playlist without using the music program on the computer, other than that this is a good mp3 if you don't want to pay the ipod amount. Plus this looks cool and shiny.

Pros: good memory and battery life

Cons: unit failed after only 10 months of use. the company wanted $99 to repair it.

i've had it for 9 months, and now i am going to smash it with a hammer

Pros: the thing is shiny (for 5 minutes)

Cons: everything else

Review: ok, where do i start? in september, i bought this product, and it worked beutifully for about 3 and a half moths. i was thinking hey, this is great mp3 player, until it finally reared it's ugly head in the form of a faulty wheel and a dying battery. but no biggie, i kept on using it, thinking that it would be ok. but no, it had it's own adgenda, and about 2 weeks later, it just turned off and stayed off for a little while, then it turned on by itself, weird eh? for a second i thought something had posessed my player. anyway, i kept using it, with the battery life slowly but surely seeping into oblivion. and what do you know, about a moth ago, the power button jams, and i had to apply about 100 tons of pressure every time i wanted to turn it on. then, about 14 days later, the power button decides it wants to go, and it disappears into the mp3 player. now it rattles all the time, and i have to use a paper clip to turn it on. and finally, yesterday, after adding a few songs to it, it just turns off and it heats up until it reaches the tempurature of the sun, then it just turns on, and now the screen fades in and out. im not joking, this is a true story, i am mega pissed and i am sick and tired of this thing, i dont know, maybe i got a lemon, but either way, i am buying an ipod next week, and when i do, my rio is going to meet the blunt end of a hammer.

Great for the price

Pros: Price, Sound, Case, Size, Looks

Cons: Poor Build quality on the controls, Cant be plugged into the computer and listened to at the same time

Review: I love this player. I bought it ultra cheap in May of 2005, I paid aout $125. I never have had any problems with player except with the volume contron wheel. I dropped the player on that edge and it broke the wheel. I no longer can control the volume. Its my only real gripe. I also dont like the fact that when its plugged into your USB port you cant listen to it.

I STILL love my Rio Carbon

Pros: It has been an EXCELLENT player

Cons: Only the original problem with the miniplug w/ the earphones. No hold button.

Review: I was one of the first customers to purchase a Rio Carbon. I mainly listen to audio books. I loved the fact that it showed up as another drive so I could just drop and drag and didn't have to mess with some aggravating software. I can plug into any computer where ever I am and delete a book once I complete listening to it (or add a book). The battery life is awesome and is STILL awesome. I carry my player with me everywhere I go and every single day. I listen to it at work plugged into some mini speakers. I run 100 miles per month and carry my player with me every time I run unless it is raining. I even take it to bed and fall to sleep listening to books. I have never had a single problem except the original problem with the first ones where you could get static from the earphone plug, but the earphones I purchased didn't have any problem. The other problem I encountered was on one computer I had to plug into the usb port on the back of the computer for it to be recognized. Everyone that sees my carbon wants one like it and several people have bought one. No one has been disappointed and I have never heard of any of them having the slightest problem. I never have a problem with the wheel. I have had a variety of MP3 players from Creative Zen, Mpio, Archos, and yes - even an Ipod which I sent back. I know one day my carbon will die and hopefully I can find as good a player to replace it as my Carbon was.

Although the Carbon has many good features, the items with flaws are the ones that really count.

Pros: Quality sound, Quality voice recorder, Excellent size

Cons: Freezes, case doesn't have a clip, instructions not user friendly, not repairable, only a 3 month warranty

Review: Rio should provide a longer warranty and a better repair/replacement service. My daughter received the Carbon as a birthday gift in September and the charging mechnicism went bad in January, just one month after the warranty expired. When I contacted customer service I was told that it isn't repairable and the only thing I can do is purchase a replacement at a cost of $99. So with all things considered my daughter and I are very disappointed with Rio's warranty and support.

Great storage, battery life, size, etc. Don't look at it funny or it might break.

Pros: Small size+great battery life&storage.

Cons: VERY FRAGILE!!! NOT PORTABLE!!!

Review: If your scroll/volume wheel breaks I hope you have a warratny. If your hard drive stops spinning, just give it a "technical tap" and it might start again???? Do you have a velvet-lined bubble-wrap purse to put it in? Just don't buy it and you won't have to worry. Best of luck, bargain hunters!

NOt one, But Two Pieces of Junk

Pros: looks nice,,,nice Cnet Review

Cons: Two players now paperweights

Review: After having the first player die after simply walking with it in my pocket, and much to the chagrin of the Rio Audio Customer Service rep,the player was replaced only to have the fragile volume control button collapse in my hand making it inoperatable. After three emails and a live rep to finally take my tale of woe, I was told that the replacement machine was no longer under warranty after 90 days and I was given the option of having it replaced again for only $90. When I asked the Customer Service rep if he would invest another $90 dollars of his own money for a machine and gamble that it would work given the poor history, he said that he understood how I felt, but there was nothing else that he could do.
In review, I spent $179 for the first player, spent time, and cash to send the player back and then had the player that was given in replacement fall apart in less than 6 months. Investing yet another 90 bucks would bring the total investment to almost $300. For that much money, I can and will do better and my nonfunctioning player will serve as a paperweight and a reminder to be careful of glowing online reviews. Save your money.

So far, so good

Pros: Sound, layout, navigation

Cons: Possible scroll wheel problem, no on the fly playlists

Review: I obtained this after three unsuccessful attempts to get me a satisfactory refurblished Rio Karma. I originally sent the Karma in for repiar/replacement because the scroll wheel got stuck and wouldn't function. Unfortunately, the three replacement units were worse - all failed within 36 hours of receipt.

Rio finally sent ame a Carbon as a replacement. So far (about 10 days), no problems, but I saw references in a web forum to the same type of problem that started this whole process off, i.e., scroll wheel problems. If this happens on this player, the impact would be worse since, unlike the Karma, the wheel controls the volume. I can only hope....

Waste of money and time

Good player but be aware of a flimsy volume wheel

Pros: Large capacity, ccol looking, good sound

Cons: Flimsy volume wheel, slow (very slow) start up time

Review: Bought this player exactly 98 days before the volume wheel broke. I am not even sure how I did it since I never dropped it and it was always in its case. In addition, I do not use the wheel much since I used the player in my car. Picked it up the other day and the wheel was broken. Warranty is for 90 days and I had it for 98 days. Rio will not fix anything so I am out of luck. This is the second Rio product I own that broke right after the warranty ran out (the first was the joystick on a Rio Cali). The Rio rep told me they do have an issue with the volume wheel breaking (so nice for him to tell me). Shelled out another $100 plus for an "out of warranty" replacement. I would suggest that you consider another player if you are at all rough on your players.

Excellent player

Pros: just about everything

Cons: have to convert MP3 files to WMA to use bookmarks

Review: Excellent sound; great capacity for storing (5G). Plays audible books, MP3, WMA files; may use as external drive and store any files. Battery life is very good.
Have to convert MP3 to WMA in order to use the bookmark feature, but downloaded a free converter program and only takes a few seconds. Ripping CD's does the conversion automatically.

I love my Rio!

Pros: Incredible battery life, easy selection, much cheaper than an iPod mini, even though it's smaller and has the same storage abilities

Cons: No acessories available, I don't like the earbuds it comes with, poor software

Review: I absolutely love my Rio. I'm a college student, and nowadays, we all walk around with music constantly playing on our MP3 players. I love that my Rio is so much smaller than an IPod, and I can carry it in my jeans pocket. It's small and thin enough it doesn't need a case. Also, I forget everything, so I'm glad that this player has such a long battery life. I also love that the interface is so simple to use. The funny touch sensitive pad on the IPod is confusing to me, and so I love the Rio's intuitive style. Because the Rio isn't as popular as a pod, don't count on being able to get fancy accessories or skins for it, although it does come with a basic case (unless you're like my Mom and didn't realize it was there so you throw it out). The software is poor. On my Dad's computer, CD's take forever to transfer, and on my computer, not only did it never read the track information, but it stopped working after a few weeks, saying it couldn't download to the Rio. But that's OK, because I just downloaded Real player, which is free, and I use that, and it works like a dream. I think it's much better than even iTunes, which I think is confusing. So, that said, I'm so glad I bought a Rio!

Solid choice for WMA users

Pros: Stong Battery life, Shiney, Easy to Use, Rio Music Manager is easy too, FM radio and Voice recorder, slim, Bright display, very inexpensive.

Cons: Weak scroll wheel, Hard to navigate with many Artists, easily scratched.

Review: I had mine for almost five months, and loved it. Sounds good, though you will need better headphones. The radio and voice recorder aren't great, but its nice having them. The battery life is very good. The rest is written above.

The Scroll Wheel is extremely delicate. I dropped my Rio carbon a few times and it was intact, until the day it fell out of my bed. My Rio fell from two feet off the ground, landed on the scroll wheel and it was jammed into the player. It still played music, but the volume couldn't be ajusted.

This player is a solid choice, but really, mind the scroll wheel.

The best product out there for the price.

Pros: Cool design, easy working, holds tons of songs.

Cons: No on the go playlists, the volume wheel starts to break a little.

Review: This is a great MP3 player. And the price is insane. Now I had the Nitrus which was a 1.5 gigabyte but it worked great and the Carbon seems like it works almost exactlly the same. My Nitrus worked very well with very quick loads and easy working controls. Although the Carbon has no physical hold it has a hold in the menu. My Nitrus had a hold on the back but I used it little. Although Apple makes a great product the Rio is also great for the price. It is just as good as the Apple. For a lot of people 5 gig is enough. Now I would not recommend the Karma though. If you need a 20 gigabyte player I would deffinetly recommend the I pod. And as for the volume/scroll wheel, it wasnt really that big of a deal. It worked fine and I have a tendency to push hard which didnt help. In conclusion, Rio makes a very good product for an even better price. While it may not be as reputable a company and it still has a few kinks it is deffinitally worth your time.

The Rio Carbon and all of its siblings are junk

Pros: Ther cost is cheap

Cons: The unit is even cheaper

Review: I purchased a Rio Carbon mp3 player, and it’s junk!! First of all I had a lot of problems with the firmware for the player. It just didn’t work. It locked up all the time, restarted when trying to play certain files, and had numerous other glitches. They came out with an updated version of the firmware, but it includes volume limiting. I guess there is a law in France that prohibits portable audio devices from putting out more than 100db. The Rio Carbon is quite capable of producing much more sound than this (that’s why I picked the Carbon) , but the new firmware limits it. So now I have a player that works, but its VERY quiet. You have to tell people to “SHUT UP!!” so you can hear your headphones. (I’d hate to be the French cop in charge of headphone too loud tickets…. Yea,, right) So you have a choice, a loud player that wont play half of your music, or a quiet player that will play MOST of your music. Rio has no other version of the firmware for Americans, so you’re stuck with the French telling you how loud you can listen to your music. This is a big drawback for the Carbon considering that most other players don’t recognize this French law, unless they are sold IN FRANCE. Some of the other players that DO use the volume limiting have a way around it in the form of different firmware. That’s my biggest problem with the Carbon, but wait, I’m not done yet. The navigation for the player stinks too. You can scroll through, and after several menu’s, pick one song, play it, then it stops and shuts off, unless you go through all of the menu’s again, and pick another song. You can’t make playlists on the player, you have to make one on your computer and transfer it to the player. The control knob that works everything is very cheap and prone to break. When it breaks (notice I said “when” not “if”), you’re all done. The player is ruined. I guess this brings out another issue. It only has a 90 day warrantee, where most others have a LOT longer one. I’m not done yet. There is a problem with headphones that have a metal ring around the base (most good headphones do). The metal case comes in contact with the metal ring around the headphone plug and you get lots of static. You can fix this by putting black tape around the jack. (Brand new player, got tape on it already, very lame) Next problem, the battery. Rio Carbon boasts one of the longest battery lives on the market. For the first 2 months I had it, it seemed to hold a charge for a long time, then it just got worse and worse. Now I have to plug it in almost every night just to get a couple of hrs of listening. No problem, just get a new battery. Warrantee is expired so you have pay for it, oh, and where do you get a new battery anyway?? I sure can’t find one. How do you put it in IF you find one?? Bust out the tape and superglue again… On the upside, customer service was very good until I asked for a version of the firmware without the volume limiting. They said ‘NO CAN DO’ Ok, now I want my money back because the player isn’t performing like it did when I bought it. Rio wants to me to return my player, and send me a new player ( the exact same one I have, with all of the same problems) FOR A $$ FEE, (since its out of warrantee). I don’t want a new junk player, I want my money back………… no response, no response. They simply won’t even talk to me about that. The way I look at it, its kind of like buying a car BECAUSE it will do 200mph, taking it to the dealer for a tune up, and when you get it back, it will only do 150mph. Would you want your money back for the car??? Certainly you would! Wait, there’s more!! I’ve never dropped my Carbon, but the case is already loose and rattling. The back of the case is made out of chrome metal, looked great for the first ½ hr I had it. I put it in my pocket, pulled it out a little later, and the case is all scratched up. It looked terrible after the first 2 days I had it. Solution, more tape to protect the case, jeeezzzzzee. To summarize, now I have a taped up, 4 month old, mp3 player with a dead battery, and it dosent even sound good anymore! Nobody will give me a refund, and I just had to spend $250 to get a good player. I now have over $450 tied up in mp3 players, and I’m still having to use a $250 one. If I would have spent the full $450 in the first place, I’d have an AWESOME player. There is one good thing, you can hack the player for the internal 5gb microdrive, and use it in anything that takes a type II CF card. I think that’s what I’m going to end up doing. I guess the old saying is true, you get what you pay for. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more. For about $50 more, you can get a really good unit with a lot more features, much better sound, a better warrantee, less breakable parts, and you wont be stuck hacking the microdrive out of your carbon just so its not a total loss.

Great MP3 player, definitely competes with ipod mini

Pros: great sound, batterylife, features, and size is amazing.

Cons: carrying case included but does not attach to anything, you basically have to make your own.

Review: Overall this is a great buy. I guarantee you will like this, and I recommend it to anyone look for efficiency and bang for the buck!

Problems From the Beginning

Pros: Good Software, Small Player

Cons: Drive went bad in less than 9 months

Review: My daughter's player hit the kiss of death 'upgrader' mode with less than 9 months of use; however, we experienced problems from time to time from the beginning (random shutdown, skipping songs, etc.). The initial fixes seem to work until recently, and then I tried everything Rio posted on the support site many times over to no avail. Rio only offered a replacement refurb. model for $99 with only a 30 day warranty. I cannot recommend this player unless you purchase some kind of extended warranty with it and that you establish a complaint file the first moment you experience a problem. I'm deeply disappointed in the product and company.

Minor glitches that are very annoying!!!

Pros: Large amount of space for price.

Cons: It randomly turns itself off, loosing the order of songs already played. It freezes and I have to hit the reset button, resulting in lost player settings. Not enough accesories available in stores.

Review: Avoid Rio!

Not for use with system with 1 or 2 USB Ports

Pros: This device is very cute. Definitely worth the money. Ease of use.

Cons: This device does not work with computer system without "sufficient power" (for example, my 2-USB port HP laptop). Device packaging is tough - a hassle for returns.

Review: If you're having any kinds of difficulty with this product, customer service is awful. They are rude and quick to be content with "There's nothing I can tell you". This device does not work on my laptop, and you have to demolish the plastic wrapping to get to the device. There is no way the store will take the device back with the demolished plastic residuals created after opening this device.

Excellent Choice

Pros: Easy interface, compact, and great sound

Cons: headphones weak, and case not really ********* for on the go.

Review: I looked around for a mp3 player for about a month. The IPOD or the RIO...I went with RIO due to price, size, and previous experience with them. Its a great player, I use it in the car and when I am at work. I love the ability to listen to a book while driving the hour to work. I would recommend getting better head phones and case, but other then that excellent product.

Not the best but it beats being an Apple Sell Out !

Pros: Good sound Quality, easy to use software, small form factor,

Cons: cheap design materials, no playlist on the fly, non removeable battery

Review: I got this player for christmas 2004 been using it since. I kinda started to look for a better player but I cant seem to find one. This player has very good functionality and its ideal for doing what an mp3 player does, letting you listen to music. My only beef with it is that it is very "weak" structurally, you do not want to drop this player from any height. It fell out of my bag from about 1ft in the air to a carpetted surface and it got dented like an apple(the fruit). Also the model I got has a static problem with headphones that have metal bases (but Rio sent me a free attachment to fix it). The sound quality is good with a 5ch eq. But you cant make a playlist as u listen which is kinda annoying but not a deal buster. This player is much better than any ipod and i wouldnt consider the ipod over the worst player out there. I used ipods and they are over rated hunks of trash. People just buy them to fit in with the rest of the tools in society. If you want a good mp3 player though get this player or a Creative Zen micro.

didn't even last a month

Pros: small, good sound, fast loading

Cons: broke with in a month, no playlist on the go

Review: I bought this on sale at best buy I didnt have quite the cash so my parents lent me some. I used it and then one time at band camp it broke. I thought that the battery had died but I took it home and plugged it up and nothing happened so I took it backto best buy because I had teh replacement plan. Rio doesnt even make the dumb thing any more. So I took the money and bought an iPod.

Small, Attractive and Powerful MP3 player.

Pros: Size, Weight, Design, Sound quality and Battery Life

Cons: Complicated Menu, No On-the_fly playlist and Lack of folder navigation support.

Review: Two words.. Excellent Bargain!
For the price of $150, you just can not go wrong with it or beat this great deal.

It is a very small and slim unit that weights very nicely in your hand and it feels and looks well built.
When playing the music, it sounds great and loud.
I keep my volume setting at 12 (30 max) on average and anything beyond 15 is simply too loud for me to handle.
The battery life is just behemoth too. Everyday I spend 1-2 hours on driving and I didn't have to recharge for nearly 3 weeks!

Now for the bad news..
I am very used to using the folder/subfolder structure to navigate through the songs, and Rio Carbon lacks such ability..
For example, I would have a main folders called Rock, HipHop, Techno and R&B, and with-in each folder, there might be a subfolders that farther breaks down the songs for me to group them as I see fit.
I understand that you could navigate them by Album, Artist, Genre, Playlist, and etc., but it sure will be a nice addition if it can support the folder navigation.

Also, the menu is bit complicated when you want to navigate through the songs. There is no one button that skips 10 next songs or quick access to playlists.
Plus, selecting a playlist requires utilising a 4 to 5 different buttons and minimum of 12 button pushes for even the top most selection from the list.

Simple player that plays music and plays it well.

Pros: Small, simple controls, smart design choices (love the rubber borders)

Cons: Slow DRM processing. Scroll wheel can be slow.

Review: I bought Rio Carbon for use with Napster-to-go. It's a great little player without frills, but that's what I like about the player. Just play music please. I don't care about all the extras. The sound quality is great, especially when paired with Sony MDR-EX51LP earphones.

I have two main improvement wishes that can perhaps be fixed with a flash update (Rio, are you reading this?)

1. Speed sensitive scroll wheel - I wish spinning the wheel faster would accelerate scrolling like on the Ipod. It can take forever to get to the song I want.

2. Faster processing - DRM license processing can take painstakingly long. Waiting 10 sec for my track to change is just down right annoying. (this doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be annoying)

Best small handheld

Pros: Good audio quality, excellent design

Cons: Careful not to drop it!

Review: Reviewers didn't notice that hitting two buttons simultaneously performs the HOLD function, a valuable feature.

Unfortunately, I treated my Carbon like it was invincible, and it's not. I left it in some luggage that I threw around, and the volume wheel broke off into the device. It was never the same after I took it apart to reattach the wheel.

8 Months and NO PROBLEMS

Pros: The Look, The Taste, The Software, EVERYTHING

Cons: ummmmm.....NOTHING!!!!

Review: Okay so I purchased My Rio Carbon about 8 months ago, and guess what, not a single problem. I have a whole bunch of friends who spent a fortune on their iPods and they are having problems after about two weeks. I use my Rio about ten hours a day, I listen to bands like, "The Used", "Hawthorne Heights", "The Game", "50 Cent", "AFI", and a whole bunch of sceamo, and rap. And guess what, the sound is crisp, beautiful and lacks nothing. The detail of the interface on the Rio Carbon is fantastic, the Play Music options are amazing, you can play by Artist, Album, Track, Genre, Year, when you put it on your Rio. It is an iPod destroyer as I like to call it. And don't even get me started on the battery life, it's mind blowing, I fall asleep with my Rio on all the time, and when i wake up ten hours later it still has half battery life left. It's crazy!!! I bought a Premium Case for it too, just a week ago, but surprisingly it didn't have a scratch on it anyway. The thing is totally scratch proof, and I have put the thing through a lot of sports and working out. And Rio's Music Manager is very easy to use. I would recommend buying this rather than an iPod.

My all-time favorite music player

Pros: Size, weight, BATTERY LIFE, ease of use

Cons: no FM tuner- a minor gripe

Review: I used to have a clickwheel 20gig ipod last year, and found myself not using it much. I eventually sold it. The RIO corrected all the issues I had with the I-pod:
- Much better battery life, (19 hrs vs 12)
- small, lightweight, easy to carry in pocket
- better volume control
I decided on this instead of the ipod mini because of battery life. Also, I never took to the clickwheel (it's a love it or hate it thing) -using it for volume control especially sucked. This one has the volume knob right on the top corner, which is much easier to use. After realizing I didn't need Twenty gigs of portable music, this was the perfect choice. The best part was the price- got mine from Compuplus direct for $155! I can't recommend it highly enough.

All things come to an end...

Pros: Very small, lightweight, easy navigation, cool features, toll free support, slick design

Cons: breakable/loose parts, very ******

Review: This was the very first mp3 player i got. It was a very cool player with all of its features and cool look, but i have run into problems owning this mp3 player.

The first one was, after about 2 weeks of receiving it, it would froze on me in recovery mode, after i upgraded the firmware and reset the player, even after the tech support told me what to do, and since they couldnt help i had to send it back and have them send me a new one (very nice addition :D unless its physical damage, then you have to pay).

The second problem was the volume/scroll/enter wheel fell off from using that as enter instead of the center button on the keypad thing. then the power botton fell out of place and thats what happened about 1 week again. After trying to fix it myself, rather than pay 150 bucks for Rio Audio to repair it, i have taken the backcover off and now it will turn on and the volume thing works, but i cant return it anymore because i have fooled around with it.

Overall i think this product is a good product for new buyers on the market for mp3 players. I gave this a 6 for all the problems i have had with the player, some not above, and for all the nice comments my friends have made on it. (mostly how small it was and yet still a 5gb).

Excellent player with severe engineering weakness. Probably the best hard drive Audible player.

Pros: Very good sound quality with better headphones. Nice form factor. Great battery life. Easy and fast uploading. Bookmarking. Hold function available through menus.

Cons: Playlist creation not possible. Scroll wheel delicacy. Lousy support.

Review: I purchased this unit for the express purpose of listening to Audible books. I also have a 3G 20GB iPod which lacks bookmarking and has terrible battery life. The Carbon has excellent battery life, bookmarking, and, after a fashion, the ability to put the controls on hold (System, lock mode, in menus). It does however suffer from a fatal flaw: the scroll wheel. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy this unit without an extended warranty. Niney-five days after I purchased it, it slipped off my knee while I was sitting in a chair putting my earbuds in, and fell to the CARPET. I picked it up to find the scroll wheel pushed in and the volume/unit inoperable. Cost to repair: $149 with a 30 day warranty(you can buy a new one for that) and get an extended warranty. I should have heeded other reviewers advice. It is a shame that the firmware does not allow for volume changes using the other controls.

Love it - blows away the iPod mini

Pros: Battery life, portability, ease of use

Cons: Cheap case & earbuds

Review: My wife has an iPod Mini - and my Rio Carbon outshines it in every way - especially size and battery life. The case that comes with it is useless (and the earbuds are just OK), but then the iPod doesn't provide any case at all.

I do hope that Rio doesn't forget the firmware upgrade they're promising - but even without that this is a far superior product and a much better deal than anything from Apple.

Very great for my first mp3 player!

Pros: Good sound quality, powerful bass. Cool backlighting. Easy to use. Great battery. Fast file transfers. Scrollwheel. Looks cool. High build quality. No problems whatsoever.

Cons: In quiet places, you can hear the hard drive spinning. That is the most pathetic con ever, but the only one I can think of.

Review: I got the Rio Carbon a week ago. I can't have enough of it. It works like a dream. I tried the IPod Mini, Creative Zen Micro, IRiver H10, and Samsung YH-825. Here is why I got the Carbon above all those.

IPod Mini: Not enough features. I don't like the click wheel. Didn't fit me well.

Zen Micro: Again, don't like the touch sensitive stuff. I didn't like the styling.

IRiver H10: A little expensive. Playback controls on side. Touch sensitive stuff.

Samsung YH825: Delays when surfing menus. Confusing to use. Not as good quality as others.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my new Rio Carbon!

Works with a Mac. Kind of.

Pros: Awesome battery life, easy transfer of songs with itunes, great size, easy to use with Audible content, Voice recorder

Cons: You can't make playlists from a Mac, No sleep timer, No FM tuner

Review: I use a Mac, but I bought a Rio Carbon because my husband has a PC and I wanted to be able to go back and forth between the two easily without forcing him to install iTunes. Now I wish I had gotten an iPod instead. Besides the stuff I expected (most notably that you can't transfer music you bought on iTunes to your Rio), you can't create Rio playlists or nested folders or anything similar on your Rio from a Mac, so my music is a complete mess unless I borrow a PC to organize things. I feel like Rio wasn't totally upfront by claiming full Mac compatibility- the lack of playlist support is a real drawback.

If I were a PC user, I would highly recommend the Rio Carbon (except that I wish it had a sleep timer and an fm tuner). Mine does occasionally freeze up, but resets easily with a pin, and the battery life is amazing.

Pros: good player but don't trust RIo

Cons: Don't trust Rio, They would not honor the rebate

Slim, fit and handsome with a few shortcomings

Pros: Unobtrusive look, simple connection to PC, lightening uploads, cool smooth dimming

Cons: Three main cons: 1. No physical hold switch, 2. No playlist creation on the device, 3. Special adapter needed for car cassette adapters or other 1/8" jacks which make static.

Review: I'm on my honeymoon with my RIO since I just got it yesterday!(Took a chance on a used unit on E-bay; purchased for $82.00) What a bargain! Anxiously plugging it into my computer, it took no more than 3 minutes to begin loading up 34 albums. It left it and came back in 15 minutes and it was done. I left it to charge on the USB cable for 4 hours and have been using it for about 7 hours since then. The power bar still indicates 1/2 power. Great! Sound is good, but not outstanding. I'm waiting for my soundman to bring my Shure's over to see the difference with $100 in ear drivers.

The only other "con" that I didn't mention above is that the "artist" selection displays artists who wrote the songs, not the album artist. That's my fault for not setting up my Windows Media to do that. I have yet to check out Rio's Music Manager, which I understand is superior in setting up music for transfer to the Carbon. If you've read the reviews, you'll see the other "Cons" are no surprise. I, however, feel those are simple inconveniences that can be addressed.

I know this review is pretty early, but I'm very excited about this product.

6 Months of Flawless Performance

Pros: Shows up as an external hard drive. Excellent battery life. Slim design

Cons: Can only view one track at a time.

Review: I've had my Carbon since last Christmas and I'm still delighted. It served my well during senior design. I could listen to music and store my files using ANY computer not just my home computer with special software installed on it. I just bought my girlfriend an ipod mini and I still like the Carbon's design better. The great thing is, I can use my Carbon with Linux (Fedora 3). I've not had any quality problems like some other people have mentioned. Kinda makes me wonder if they've been playing football with their Carbon. Oh, and I still consistently get 12-15 hours of battery life, so you can't beat that.

A player that finally does exactly what I want

Pros: Drag and drop, the thing is tiny and light, battery power, great price

Cons: No FM Tuner

Review: These days it seems almost impossible to find a player that doesn't need some kind of special software to load music onto it. Finally, I've got one. You just plug this little guy into your USB port, and it shows up as a drive on your machine. NO DRIVERS REQUIRED! This also means that you can use the player as flash drive for storing data files, with no pesky partitions to create ala the Zen Micro.

Unlike the Zen Micro or the iPod, when you drag and drop music files onto the Carbon, they are recognized as music files and not data. In other words, you can immediately start listening to that music. No iTunes or Windows Media Player 10 or any other program to get your MP3 files to, you know, play on your MP3 player. When you unplug the Carbon after you've copied some songs onto it, it takes a few seconds (about 60 for me when I transfered 2gigs of MP3s) for it to read all the ID3 tags. Then, you're good to go. You can listen to songs by artist, genre, album, etc.

I'm a big fan of just dumping alot of music onto a player then listening to all of them, shuffled. For me, the player is completely perfect. However I know not everyone listens to music in that way, and in that case you will have a problem. The player does not allow you to build playlists on the fly. However if playlists are your thing, the included Rio software does allow you to create playlists.

Size is also an important factor, and the player scores high here. It is thin. I mean, REALLY thin, maybe half an inch or so. It is rounded, streamlined and frankly, it's just amazing that Rio fit as much as they did into this beatiful little package. I also love the small touches- the red backlighting for the small control pad on the front of the unit and the Rio logo at the top, and how the backlit menu slowly goes dim when not in use. Just great quality-of-life touches.

I would've really liked an FM Tuner on this little fella, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Considering the price and the versatility of the player, I can manage without it.

For those of you who are having problems with Rio's customer support, I strongly suggest buying a unit from Best Buy. They have 2 year replacement warranties that let you trade the player in for its full value and allow you to purchase ANY player with that credit, not just the same unit. If my Carbon keeps making me this happy though, I don't see why I would want another player.

Cons: dont drop it, no auto play list and it take time to get used to controll if lefty

Review: This player is very good I like it better than my friens zen micro and it is $40 dollars cheaper!! It plays for about 20 hours if you just let the player on playing sonds but, if you are going thru the menu alot and have the back lite on it will last about 16-17 hours. STATIC PROBLEMS!! Rio doesn't help fix!

Pros: small size, ergonomics, battery life

Cons: static noises, weak audio output

Review: All in all this is a very good microharddrive MP3 player and is a comparable competitor to the Apple's iPOD mini. I chose this player for it's compact, sleek size, battery life, and fact that it's not an Apple product. The performance is good and I still use the player everyday. The only drawback for me was the static problem that occurred with the use of certain headphones. This was a design flaw on Rio's fault. After experiencing this flaw for some time, I e-mailed Rio for a fix that they were providing. They refused to send me a tiny plastic washer because my player was no longer under their ridculously short 3 month warranty. It made me angry that they could not take the time to send out a tiny plastic washer to ensure the satisfaction of their customers. I was an avid supporter of the Rio Carbon as a competitor to the iPOD mini's, but now i'm sad to say that I am dissatisfied with their customer care and will take my business elsewhere.

IPOD mini is ok, but this blows it away, at $50 less.

Pros: 1GB more memory.maller design(fits comfortably into my wallet) than ipod mini, WMA compatibility(if you rip cd's using windows media player, I think you want this). Voice recorder(not in ipod).

Cons: back gets scratched up easily, slightly smaller screen. no hold button.useless case ----NONE OF THOSE THINGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Review: I bought this because it was $50 less than ipod mini, and it held more, better battery life, and i can take it everywhere i go. Even if this was the same price as Ipod mini, i would STILL buy it. The only thing better than this in the 'mini' category is the Creative Zen Micro, wich is another great choice(it's just $50 more than this). I screwed up my headphones by twisting the cord, they had decent sound, they are just as good as ipod headphones(not as cool looking, but still). WMA playback is a
BIG thing for me, it also means that you can hold more songs because WMA takes up less space. I don't hate the IPOD, when you buy one, you are paying for the name, and the simplicity of it(not that this ins't simple also). The user interface is very good and the side scrolling wheel lets me do what i want just as fast as the cool wheel on the ipod. I am able to keep this thing in my WALLET, that of course won't work for most people, but for me it's almost unnoticable in the pocket. The screen is smaller on this, but it is ALWAYS very easy to read, so that doesn't matter. The back of it scratches just by being in my pocket(doesn't matter either). No hold button(but i've never needed it, you can still lock the keys like a cell phone). I've dropped it like 15 times after a month and it's fine. Twice, i had it plugged into the computer, i was trying to transfer music, play music, play video's , and play games, and convert audio files,, all at the same time,,, and i had to reset the player because my computer froze. This player also looks very sleek. I'm not saying that IPOD isn't a good/ok choice, but i am saying that this is a better one.

Small size, good sound, no good case, no folder navigation

Pros: The size is very compact , easily fits even in jeans pockets. The sound quality is excellent. The headphones are great

Cons: The supplied leather case hides the main navigation controls, and you have to pull it out of the leather case if you want to navigate. It is not possible to navigate by folders

Great Value, Competent Player

Pros: Excellent Sound, Outstanding battery life, Diminutive size, Lightweight, Customizable EQ

Cons: No PC iTunes support, no accelerated scrolling, questionable build quality?, earphone shortout problem not really resolved, no selection of cases, ones that exist are expensive

Review: I've had the Carbon about two weeks, and overall I am pleased with it. I practically got this player for free, that is why I chose it over other competitors. If price were no object, I probably would have gotten an iRiver. I also have an iPod mini, so I have first hand experience comparing the two. The mini and carbon remind me of Hyundai and Toyota cars, and I'll tell you why. The mini is rock solid dependable, just a superior product, just like Toyota. While it's build quality is not up to par with the mini, the carbon seeks to undercut the mini with more features and a lower price, like Hyundai. I'm not knocking the carbon, it's an excellent product, but it's also not encased in solid aluminum, either. I have had no problems with my carbon thus far, and I have no idea what these people who "have dropped their carbon one foot on a carpeted floor" causing the player to malfunction, are talking about. These are electronic devices, not bricks, so don't abuse them and expect them to work properly. I use the carbon for working out and lifting weights, I even sometimes sit on it, and no problems whatsoever. By the way, IT DOES HAVE A PHYSICAL HOLD BUTTON, just press the center key and the menu button at the same time, very convenient. Sound quality is excellent, much better than the mini, with much warmer sound and enveloping bass. On the other hand, the shortout problem with headphone plugs employing a metallic base has not been fixed. Rio's solution was to ship the carbon with headphones using a plastic base. This is not really fixing the problem, so be careful to tape up any metallic based headphones you use with it. Battery life is rediculous, around 20+ hours. This is just setting a playlist and letting it play, not surfing through menus non-stop. Being active in the menus reduces battery life significantly. The lack of no on the fly playlists doesn't really bother me, I just do it on my PC. What really, really bothers me though, is the lack of an accelerated scroll, such as on the iPod. If you are playing a song in a playlist, and you want to scroll to one much further down the list, in the iPod all you do is hit back, then scroll. Not so with the carbon my friends. You must hit the menu button, which bumps you to the main menu, then select all music, then playlist, then you have to go through the songs one by one if they aren't labeled, like much of my collection is not. If they are labeled, just scroll through them using the volume button. Very inconvenient and really pisses me off. On the other hand, it has motivated me to label my songs... Oh, and you can only use iTunes IF YOU ARE A MAC USER! Sorry PC guys, Rio wants you to use their Music Manager software. I use Windows Explorer instead of their software. Though statiscally not much smaller than the mini, in the real world it feels MUCH SMALLER than the mini. Not much accessory support, and cases are few and expensive. Good thing it is so small, as I haven't found I need a case for it yet. Overall a good player that undercuts the weaknesses of the mini to really shine in those areas.

Well, the average quality earbuds that shipped with the player have given out. The left bud is shorted, and vibrates constantly. I have replaced them with a pair of Shure E2c's, and the difference in sound quality is phenomenal! Though the Shure's are super expensive, combined with the carbon's sound quality, I am floored.

Well, the scroll wheel finally broke.I came home one day and found the wheel broken, so I guess my brother might have been messing around with it... Anyway, rather than pay Rio $150 to do something I could do, I opened up the Carbon to fix it myself. Took awhile to get the back cover off, as several of the clips are very, very difficult to reach. As a result, I damaged two clips. Inside the Carbon it looks like some amateur college freshman engineering project. No wonder it is so cheap! I found the scroll wheel is attached to the circuit board by two miniscule plastic indents. The power button is the same! It looks like plastic used in model car kits! I decided to epoxy the wheel back in place, and epoxied the power button as well, just to be safe. I replaced the cover, but it doesn't close fully on the top because of the broken clips...I might just epoxy the case shut. The Carbon still works wonderfully and sounds great, but the Rio R&D dept. needs to go back to school!

Solid value player

Pros: Easy navigation; excellent sound; great battery; plug-n-play

Cons: Can't make playlists on the fly; software clunky

Review: I hesitated posting a review until I had used the player for at least a month. So, after some real daily use, here it is...
It was a tough choice between this unit and the Zen Micro. Bottom line -- I need it to play mp3's and wma's, not listen to the FM radio. I travel on loooong flights often, so the big battery life is important. The Carbon delivers VERY GOOD sound (IMHO, better than iPod and comparable to Zen Micro; included 'buds aren't the best). The customizable equalizer is nice. Battery life is really, really long (14-16 hours). International flight? No worries. No need to buy another battery 'just in case'. Small size and neat charger design are also cool. Problems? The included software is a bit clunky. I use it just to make playlists. You can use almost any other software and it'll work, even Windows Explorer. So you can plug into your friend's Windows machine without having to install software. Nice! Is is fragile? I don't know. Just don't be a bonehead and throw it around, and you'll be fine. It will serve me well, then die. And then I'll get the next latest and greatest. (PS. Get the case from mindknob.com - much better!)

Good Player with a few minor problems

Pros: Small, clean sound, great battery life, stylish look, easy to use, red luminescent buttons, great included software

Cons: not so good earbuds, only plays selected song, no accelerated scrolling, no on the fly playlists

Review: I recently returned my zen micro for this and I am in all actualality more pleased with thi one. The battery life is a heck of a lot longer than the micro. One thing that really bugged me on the micro is while your listening to it the battery would warm up causing you're hands to just lightly (not normally noticeable) perspire. This would cause ur hands to stick to the touch pad. At first i liked it but ur hands have to be "perfect" as in no moisture whatsoever on them. THe carbon on the otehr hand doesnt havet thsi problem. And quite contrry to what the editors say about the hold button situation, you simply press menu and select together to turn the hold function on and do it again to turn it off. Its even easier to put on hold then the micro's toggle. The carbon is also noticeably smaller than the micro. You can very easily forget its in your pocket. The micro is too thick and feels like a big block in your pocket the carbn is a lot better in this sense. In my opinion i think the carbon is better looking but poeple tend to differ from me on thet. I love my carbon, and would highly reccomend trying both the carbon and micro out before buying them, whatever you choose good luck with it.

Easy of use, and small

Pros: Rio music manager is a breeze, excellent package, fantastic sound, simply the best value for the buck

Cons: carrying case stinks, head buds are useless

Review: This is my first MP3 player, not counting the Ipod 20G my wife bought, but I do not use. I researched this thing to death, and finally chose the Carbon. It came down to it, and the Zen Micro, but I chose the Rio due it's very small size, and excellent price. I payed less than $200, including a 3 year warrentee.

I travel extensively, thus, having a very small, and powerful player that has battery life to last across the Atlantic was a must. I can load up to 2500 songs, and the battery is all it's billed to be.

Larger capacity players may be just right for some, and I even considered the Zen Touch, but lets face it, very few of us actually load 10,000 songs. 2500 is more than enough for me.

The ear buds did not fit my ears, and I found that a traditional head set sounded better and blocked out plane noise as well. This is the best option for travelers.

I have worked out extensively with the Rio and it has never skipped. No problems in the gym.

When you factor in all the features, battery life, styling and ease of use, and top it off with a sell price of $150, there simply is no better choice.

I read several reviews about the thumb wheel breaking off, but unless you use it as hockey puck, you should have not issues.

Just in case, I purchased the 3 year warrentee for $29, so I'm covered just in case.

A very good player

Pros: Ease of use, good sound, inexpensive, durable

Cons: Lousy case, not so great earbuds included, no on the fly playlists

Review: I have owned this player for over two weeks now (unlike many of the ipod owners who just write reviews to slam non ipods).
In that time I have had a chance to fully work through this product.

First off, buy a third party case and set of earphones. Toss the ones included.

Secondly, this player can handle MP3's and WMA's encoded at up to 320kbps. After being told time and again it couldnt, I tried for myself and have had no issues.

The static issue you may read about in older reviews is fixed in all new units (units with Serial numbers at or above 52).

I really enjoy this player. I wish it had the ability to do on the fly playlists, aside from that I have no gripes. You can set it to random, select by gener, artist, year, etc... and it will play through only those songs if you choose. Anyhow, who knows, maybe a future firmware update will enable it.

It is able to survive workouts, has survived two drops off my desk at work with no issues. Still, opt for the extended warrenty wherever you buy it. Its worth it on ANY hard drive based mp3 player, just in case.

It is not yet compatable with Napster to go fyi (their website says its upcoming in firmware updates). Best Buy sold me on this player by telling me it was. Still, I am so happy with this player so far that I dont care at the moment.

If you are not the proud owner of 500 cd's worth of music, then I highly suggest this player.

It is small, durable, nice looking, easy to use and the battery life is pretty good. All in all... good stuff.

Nice, but a little hard to control

Pros: small, looks good, fancy backlight, very thin, scroll wheel

Cons: scroll wheel hard to depress, menu button sometimes a pain, doesnt fit the hand well, metal makes interference with many headphones

Review: I own both this and the Creative Zen Micro and use the Zen Micro far more, only because it is easier to control. I thought the scroll wheel would make this a great idea, but they made it so hard to press in it can be a pain. It fits GREAT in any pocket, but it has no remote! The controls are nice and shiny but on the front they are a tad small for my fingers, and im only a 17 year old. The screen is nice, and shows lots of info, but it is extremely small compared to the Zen Micro's and very low resolution. The GUI is fine, but it is kinda slow, when you select a setting and want to change it you have to wait through a little animation of a check being drawn on the screen, annoying in my opp. I like the size though, and it fits so well into a pocket you might forget it's there. It's also a good deal, and feels nice in your hand but when using it, it can hurt, since the sides are so thin they press against your hand and almost hurt, while the Zen Micro fits any hand great.

Cons: earphones - mediocre, need a better case, menus are somewhat difficult to navigate

Good player, lacks accessories

Pros: Large display, small, easy to figure out

Cons: incovenient to use, no armband, no beltclip

Review: Rio makes a very good player, but that is where it ends. They refuse to create an armband or beltclip case for it, saying it is not meant for vigorous exercise. I asked about using it to go for a walk, and they ignored me. If you don't have pockets, you have to carry it in your hand. Meanwhile, I am wrecking it even quicker by dropping it all the time. Customer service is poor. Too bad, it is a nice player.

Great player but not perfect

Pros: easy to work, tiny, plays WMAs

Cons: very slow on start up, no cases available

Review: This player hasn't geeven me but one major problem in the first month. If you you buy this player don't EVER pull the cable out of the computer without taking it from the player first. If you do it will result in having to reformat the drive. Most people know not to do that but my brother didn't:( So as long as you don't abuse the player it should be fine

BEST PLAYER ON THE MARKET!

Pros: Exactly enough space, small, light, GORGEOUS, fast, functional, AWESOME sound, sturdy, great tech support, etc.

Cons: Clickwheel went inside the player twice. Keep reading about that in this review...

Review: Once i dropped the player on the ground and the clickwheel went inside the player. I freaked out because i just got it! then i did a lot of reasearch and thought that i cudnt get it fixed. Then, i called rio, and they said I could bring it into one of their distributors in Ontario (i live in toronto). This was a really big shock for me because i didnt think that i could get a replacement since it was my fault and i live in canada. I took it over there, and without question they just gave me a new one! Same thing happened again, but this time the warranty was expired. Guess what? i rushed over there, and got a new one ABSOLUTELY FREE! I love my rio carbon! and Rio support!

Pros: Cheap, Sounds good

Cons: the case sucks

Review: I love this player. I downloaded the latest firmware right when I bought it and I have experienced none of the problems mentioned by others..

The case is an issue though. There are several other little things that are annoying, like the metal on the back that gets smudged and scratched, but nothing that affects the sound.

Great MP3 and WMP Player with top quality audio

Pros: Audio Quality, Looks, Capacity (5Gb), Navigation

Cons: no lossless formats

Review: I use the Carbon with a pair of Shure E3cs and it seems to be a perfect patch. The E3s tend to be difficult to drive due to their impedance variations, but the Carbon handles it perfectly and the sonic quality of this conbination is superb. I have a very wide range of musical tastes - Duke Ellington to Scissor Sistors and they all sound great. Storage capacity is excellent and the USB2.0 interface gives really fast transfer speeds. Music navigation is a single handed operation and very efficient. What's more the Carbon easily slips into a shirt pocket. If all that's not enough, the Carbon has killer looks and makes the iPods look positively tacky. I've absolutely no regrets other than the fact that I'll probably have to buy one or two more to stop the rest of the family pinching mine!

Too hot to handle

Pros: Fresh Style, Good Build Quality, Great Sound, Cheap Price

Cons: Poor Customer Service, VERY BAD CARRYING CASE

Review: The Rio Carbon is a great mp3 player for those looking for an alternative to the Ipod mini. It has dazzling looks and the pics of the website doesn't do it any justice. The sound quality is good although you should get an bigger set of earphones. The Build Quality is very good, the feel and the construction are very solid. And last of all it's pretty cheap now for a 5 GB micro hardrive Mp3 player with the $20 discount on the Rio website.

I would of given this product a 9 but the carrying case is horrible. It's hard to take out, you can't access the controls, you barely can see the screen and it has no belt clip. It seems as though the designer for the case got high on some weed and designed it while high.

Good value in a small package

Pros: Small size, high capacity, long battery life, smart design.

Cons: Useless carrying case

Review: I love it -- it takes my WMA's, my MP3's and my Audible books. The only drawback as far as I am concerned is the carrying case -- there is no way I can attach it to my clothing or body while working out. It also blocks access to the controls when in place. Really poor design when contrasted to the design of the instrument itself.

Pros: Awsome interface, Great size, easy downloads

Cons: Needs a lock button, good case but could use some holes for the other buttons.

Review: I love this thing. It Rocks! i have had no unusual activity or problems and other than the kindof cheasy case, its great. It has a lock mode but would work a little better with a lock button. Pros: Simple and beautiful

Cons: bad customer service

Review: Great player!!...I've had the Rio Carbon for a few months now. When buying an MP3 player I had gone through 2 other players
(including the MiniIPOD) to end up with the Carbon. Easy to use with a good software, plenty of storage for most users and good bettery life...(by the way for those who complain the IPOD has a much shorter battery life, 3hrs. approx.)Looks are an opinion and personally I have not had one bad comment on its looks and I do bring it everywhere. I have not had ((1)) problem with the player! it always works well...

If you get one that works, youre lucky

Pros: it does have a few firmwares out

Cons: it still is quirky

Review: I went for this thinking I was getting a bargain. I only paid $160 but found that was about 150 too much. After you get one of these you may be surprised how odd it feels in the hand...and the look is very outdated. So, my concern since I got it cheap was the performance. Oh my! It should have come with extra internal parts! Mine froze and popped and got hot inbetween wondering how long till the next nightmare!
I am serious, this thing is the most quirky, scary, buggy mess Ive ever dealt with. Unreal about the battery life too. I was getting 3-6 hours on this "20 hour" battery!

BEST Player EvEr BOO YEAH

Pros: sleek, small, cool lights, super quality lots of memory compared to mini ipod

Cons: none the will kill an ipod except for poor customer support

Review: Bestb player cheap, stylish, handy, and just so cool
Updated
Short and simple: i would suggest buyining it but buy an extra warranty if u can get 1 (i know the Circuit City i bought it from had a 2 year warranty for around $60). It is the very best MP3 player out there but it breaks easily.
it started 2 weeks ago when i noticed i had to hold the menu button to bring up the menu instead of just pushing the button. Then yesterday the volume/scroll whell got shoved into the carbon for absolutely no reason. Now I can't control my volume. i figured that the volume was fine and I'd make do untill i found a solution. next day i charged it and listened to it with no problems except those mentioned above. And then a few hours later I couldn't turn the carbon on.after i kept tryin to no avail the carbon just started heating up like crazy. It got to the point where i couldn't hold it anymore. I haven't tried removing the back yet but if i do and it still doesn't work i will have to buy a new one for $200 instead of the $100 to replace it.
My Mistake: Didn't buy a warranty. this is after i owned my carbon for about 5-6 months

Just one or two downsides

Pros: Ecellent sleek design, cool backlight and red lights, overall good player.

Cons: Some menu problems, takes awhile to start up.

Review: The only downsides of the Rio Carbon are a dew problems with its interface. First of all, it takes about 15 seconds to start up, but thats no big deal. The main thing that bothered me is that when you are viewing artists and you select an artist, you can't see all the songs you have of that artist in one list, you can only see what songs you have on each album by them. Also there is no FM radio, but I'm not really bothered by that. The Rio comes in a nice carrying case, but in the carrying case all but two buttons are concealed, so if you really want to you might want to cut some holes so the screen and other buttons are accesible. The Rio works with itunes if you download the plugin off rioaudio.com, but if you use that all of your genres might not show up on the rio, or it might just be my itunes. But thats no big deal because most people usually select their music through album or artist, not genre. OVerall, I think that besides the few problems with the menu, the carbon is a very solid player.

Probems with player from the start

Pros: Nice design, lightweight and small

Cons: Battery life was disappointing, defective out of the box

Review: I purchased a Rio Carbon last week, and started using it this weekend. I got this unit at a good price ($180), but the unit needed constant resetting and the battery would only last 30 min. after transferring songs to the player for the first time. I did charge it fully as stated, but I still was having problems.
I was told that this unit was just defective, and I should get a replacement, but I told the merchant I would rather have a refund (since the warranty is only good for 90 days I didn't want to deal with another one).
I have a Rio S10 (a flash player) that I love. I have had it for a long time and it still runs well. I have addedd a 1 GB flash card, and it works perfectly, so I through Rio's hard drive players were just as good. I hold off on a large capacity player until I see which ones are more reliable.

A Good Player, But Some Problems

Pros: Small, sleek design, cool screen, good software, very cheap

Cons: Hard to navigate, bad UI, bad carrying case, sometimes slow and sluggish

Review: I recieved my Rio Carbon about two weeks ago, after doing a lot of research. I initially decided on the Creative Zen Micro, but then saw how cheap the Carbon was and decided to go with it.

When I got it, I liked it, but as I started to use it more I discovered the numerous problems with it. First of all, the navigation is very quirky on this player. It is very annoying that whenever, for example, I select a song, and then right after I start that song want to select another one. When I hit the back button to go back a step, it takes me all the way back to the main menu, so I have to find where I was again.

This may not seem annoying, but it really is when you use the player. An annoying quirk about the UI is: if you select a song, a single song (on an album for example) and you want to go to the next song, clicking the forward or reverse buttons just restart the song, because the player thinks that the only song you wanted to listen to is that one, if that makes any sense.

This isn't very annoying, but after a while it gets to you. On this player, it is also hard to scroll through long lists of songs, and sometimes the menu navigation seems sluggish.

But there are not all bad things about this player. It looks great, with red backlights behind the buttons and its very small and sleek body. It's a very easy player to use, which could be good for people new to the MP3 market.

The screen is backlit by a cool white light, which makes it easy to read. The software for the Carbon is also good and easy to use.

But for me, the biggest pro to this product is how cheap it is. I got mine at Comp-U-Plus for $158 w/shipping after rebate.

The Rio Carbon is a good player, but its navigation quirks and lack of features have led me to return it for a Creative Zen Micro, which I love. But hey, you get what you pay for.

AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!! IPOD MINI Killer!!!! even 6GB Version!!

Pros: small; very large battery life; good price if you look for it

Cons: back is made of metal that holds every fingerprint and smudge

Review: I really like my Rio Carbon. I hear people say that Rio's customer service is horrible. That is true, but if you buy it from an online site (let's just say buydig.com) you can get a 3 year waranty for 25$. So if something goes wrong with it you call or email the people you bought it from. It's that simple people!!! Fine player - great size, solid construction

Pros: Player easily fits into one hand. Backlit display is bright. Menus easy to navigate. Battery life is excellent

Cons: Must use right hand to fully operate all buttons with one hand...I'm a lefty. Phone jack produces static with higher end plugs. Must use tape or pull plug slightly out to prevent. Case is cheap

Review: Overall, and excellent player. Given memory size, quality construction, and price, this player will definitely draw business away from ipod mini. If Rio would offer a case that protects the player while still making the navigation buttons accessible they would have a winner on all counts.

Ugly design , poor navigation , no accessories , not Apple

Pros: Shows us how great the Apple iPod really is

Cons: The Rio Carbon itself , overpriced, cheap and ugly design

Review: This is probably the best attempt to copy the Apple iPod and the company falls very short in its design. No other company has even come close to providing a great musical listening experience like Apple has. After buying an iPod I have now changed from being an avid PC user to an avid Mac user. If people in the PC world only knew how much better Apple computers and products were...

Great little player!!!

Pros: Small, light, good sound quality, excellent battery life

Cons: carrying case needs work

Review: For anyone who can live with carrying "only" 80 hours of tunes and prefers a small form with great battery life, the Carbon is the answer. It doesn't hurt that it functions as a UMS device so it can be connected to any computer without concern over software. It would be perfect if it had a decent case (although you can modify the included one with with an exacto knife to cut a window for the LCD and control button). With the initially low price plus a rebate, it can't be beat.

Pros: you are able to recharge this thru your usb.

Cons: having this in black would rule

Review: this player kicks mega a$$.i wonder if the people that rated this fine player a 1 and 2 have the same player i have.i havwe had no problems with any rio i have owned.i have this carbon and a flash player.never a skip or anything.i have to figure that most people are clueless when it comes to computers and mp3 players.bottom line is if you dont know how to treat a player it prob wont last.btw if you buy this carbon get the sony in ear ...earbuds..they rule...great player

What a piece of junk. I would give it a 0 if I could

Pros: battery life

Cons: Everything.

Review: My rio experience started off poor. I order the limited edition, and it was shipped two weeks late. They then wanted me to fill out this questionaire, and upon completion, I would be a special member of the rio audio team! As a member of this team, you receive defective products, poor service, and hateful emails! My scroll wheel broke after about a week and then it took Rio about 2 months to respond to my email, so I'm pretty sure my warranty is up, but I can get a new one for a replacement fee of only 149.99!! I mean, I put down 270 for the player, 150 for the replacement, I should be happy! BUY AN IPOD! Buy and Ipod and save yourself the trouble. You can buy my broken player with all the songs on it if you really want.

Meh...Unless your looking to buy for target practice

Pros: It's Not Hideous

Cons: Horrible user interface, bad support from rio, lack of features, lack of compatablity, lack of supporting software

Review: The user interface compares to trying understand and talk to a flea. You will most likely have to read the instruction manual and even then...the buttons will been cluttered and non-intuitive. There are very few features, lack of good supporting software, and Rio offers a horrible support plan: 90 days. I don’t sink $200 into something that only has 90 day support plan. It’s your money not mine…

Smartest Choice For A Microdrive Player

Cons: Headphone jack causes static for gold plated headphone plugs (fixable), on-the-fly playlists would be nice

This is the nearly perfect player from Rio. Apple can go to bed.

Pros: Small, good sound quality and battery life, easy to use and strong built quality, perfect navigation

Cons: Sometimes, the navigation is slow, So-so origin earbuds, no FM Tuner

Review: This player can be the alternative of the Apple iPod mini or Creative Zen Micro. With his good shape, thin and sleek, a beautiful backlight, a simple use, his 20 hours' battery life and a good built quality, the Rio Carbon is truly a perfect Mp3 player. The only points I regret is the absence of a FM tuner and better origin earbuds. For less than 200$, this is really a good choice.

A small, sleek and attractive 5GB MP3 player ready for the typical music enthusiast

Pros: small, easy to use software, exceptional sound quality, unparalleled battery life

Cons: Terrible protective case, below average earbuds, no hold switch

Review: I recently picked up the Rio Carbon, and it's easy to say it's the one of the only MP3 players out there capable of putting up a fight with players in its class (such as the iPod mini). If I were to set aside the cons, this is undoubtedly the perfect, and quite possibly the best MP3 player for anyone who wants enough space to fit a wide range of mp3's/wma's...and when I mean wide range, approximately 1000 songs (at 192kbps bitrate). That's an average of 80 music albums! Apart from that, the battery life is exceptionally long. With 20 hours of playback time (a little exaggerated), it's perfect for anyone who's always on the go, having little time to recharge. Great Player!

Nearly perfect product

Pros: great battery life, absolutely tiny, simple controls, fast

Cons: a line-in would be nice....that's about it

Review: cnet's complaint that there's no physical hold switch is only half true....actually, it works just like most candy bar cell phones. just hold the menu button and push the center "select" button to lock and unlock the carbon. still not as easy as a switch, but almost more versatile, since you can set it to let you control volume only, etc. otherwise, this product just excels. syncs up with WMP10 with no software at all, or you can click and drag onto it. i like the physical interface vs. the touch sensitive ipod mini or zen micro. plus it's way thinner than either. there's really nothing wrong with this, and now its $200, $180 after the $20 rebate, making it pretty much the best deal since the junior bacon cheeseburger at wendys. buy them both.

At $199, how could you resist?

Pros: Best design, very thin, cool backlights, easiest navigation, 5gb hard drive, voice record, 5 band customizable equalizer, easy to use software, better sound quality than iPod mini, 20 hours battery

Cons: Battery meter can be inaccurate sometimes, voice recording isn't too great, no on the fly playlists, back gets scratched/fingerprints

Review: This player is the player to beat for the micro hard drive player class. It has a unique shape that is very thin, with eye-catching looks and really good backlights that complement the appearance of the player. It will turn heads. Sound is way better than iPod mini but falls short compared to Creative Zen Micro. 5 band custom EQ is a great feature and the voice recording, while mediocre, does its job. 20 hours battery life makes it seem like it lasts forever. Extremely easy to use, the wheel navigates and can be pushed in to make selections in the easy laid out menus, but the center button will do as well. Now priced at $199, its a steal.

Pros: small, easy to use, cheap, small, cute, nice sound, holds a lot of song, good battery life

Cons: at first i noticed the Rio skipped a lot. After changing the headphones this problem ended. The headphones arent that great and i think they caused the skipping

Review: I was hesistant on buying this product. It was either this or the ipod. I finally decided on this after reading some reviews and finding out that ipod doesnt support WMA files. I think overall an ipod would be good if you dont mind using ipod software to download songs and use cds. The Sexiest Microdrive player around

Pros: Sexy, Batt Life, Audio quality, Intuitive controls, good price

Cons: former static problem, BUT IT HAS BEEN SORTED!

Review: Without a doubt the sexiest microdrive player around.. iPod mini looks like a toy now, this, and the iriver h10 are seriously sexy players. I used to think apple had the best navigation system, but after getting my Rio Karma (which i absolutely LOVE) i've changed my mind. Rios user interface is fantastic, its fast, functional, looks good, and their really easy unless your like some retard or something. Cnet is and always has been biased towards the iPod, so i wouldnt take their reviews too seriously... carbon = great ipod competitor

Pros: watch out for a lot of fake anti-anything-but-ipod comments. there's like 20 or so negative ones posted on january 15 and september 1 that all seem like some apple employees got bored. and really, a lot of ipod lovers seem to post replies without even try

Cons: i would really love more features. just an FM tuner maybe, physical hold switch, dedicated volume buttons (like my nitrus), and on-the-fly playlists. then, it's perfect =). but i am asking a bit too much i guess, since it's already a great value.

Pros: I bought this unit yesterday and already loaded it with tunes (WMA files only, they're smaller than MP3 files) The ipods are cool but let it go already. Many of the features that most people use are including in the Rio Carbon. Its an MP3 player, is a n

Cons: While I have enough music on the computer to fill Apple's 40 gig i-pod, that's not an option for a Win 98 holdout. The included leather slip case looks good, but gives no access to the navigation controls (although you can adjust volume and turn it on and

The mp3 player to have

Pros: Easy to use interface, excellent sound, a great design, the perfect size HD, and over 20 hours of battery life.

Cons: 3 month warranty- you need an extended warranty from a 3rd party (best buy, viking, walmart etc etc). no playlists on the fly- a little irritating at first, but once you do load up a couple from your PC it's smooth sailing.

Cons: I didn't find anything that I didn't like about the Carbon. It would be better if the price were < $200, but it's still a better bargain than the mini. I guess that it would probably be worth more if it said Apple on the front and had white ear buds

Cons: The back is probably very likely to smear just like the original Ipod backing. It would be cool if there was a belt clip included. One possible downside is the recharging of battery via USB only.
