"The Carbon Pearl shines" on by G_Vinny
Pros: Compact, great sound, no unnecessary frills
Cons: No on-the-fly playlist making
Summary: I'm not going to say that this is the best microdrive player out there, because this is the only one I've had. That said, this is the best microdrive player out there. For those people who want something simple, along with the basic essentials, this player is for you. To clear up some of the confusion I've seen regarding the Carbon Pearl, it does indeed come with an updated carrying case that includes a belt clip (very essential for me). This new case allows you to clearly see the screen, and the case has appropriate openings with which to operate the player's functions. No, the player does not have an external hold switch. In my opinion, this is an advantage as it is one less movable part that could otherwise be susceptible to breaking. To hold, you simply hold down the menu button, then press the center button at the same time - contrary to what other people have said, this basically takes the same amount of time as it would to flip an external hold switch... and you don't have to go through the menu to do it. The player's microdrive does not skip. I've used it when lifting, and running. It doesn't even skip while I'm making my final push at the end of a run, so I definitely say it's dependable in that area. Next, I'll address the only real flaw with the player - playlist making. You can't make playlists within the Carbon. Instead you have to use the Rio Manager that comes with it, or Windows Media Player (I've used MusicMatch as well, but I prefer WMP). In fact, I strongly suggest using WMP over the Rio Manager software that comes with it because it is much easier to quickly put a playlist together. It is also advised to change the setting on file transfer mode. Simply go to settings -> transfer mode -> and then change from Auto to MSC mode. This will allow you to create your own folders as you please, instead of having all your music go to a default music folder (which is what happens in Auto, or MTP, mode). The only drawback is that in MSC mode, you can't transfer Audio Subscription tracks to the Carbon (which doesn't matter to me), but you can easily switch between the modes to take care of that problem. Lastly, the battery life is good as advertised; however, you will more than likely end up using it up before 20 hours. You will want to get the most out of the Carbon's custom equalizer, which will in turn drain battery faster. Also, you may wish to convert all of your files to 128Kbps to save drive space. I did that at first, but I found that if you transfer your music at its original bitrate, the transfer goes at least 5 times faster. I know this is very long, but I hope it's helped a lot.

"Excellent sound and size" on by Brechenme
Pros: BATTERY LIFE, ease of use
Cons: The case it comes with, Finger prints
Summary: It is a very small package, so small some IPOD kiddie was making fun of it thinking it was a flash MP3 player and talking how his 4gb IPOD had so much more room for music. Well when i broke the news it was 5GB of memory in that tiny little package he looked astoinished. I love the fact that it has about 8 hours more battery life then the IPOD, even though they are updating the IPOD to have more battery life most IPODS people are carrying around have a 12 hour battery life. This is a sweet MP3 player that is nice in your pocket, great sound, their software is easy to use and requires no switching your music around like ITUNES. I bought mine refurbished(i think, you couldn't tell) for about 160 before a $20 rebate and it is an excellent buy. When it came to my house, the MP3 player looked brand new even the back which is shiny silver had no scratches. Finger prints suck on the back though, but it is easy to avoid this because the Rio has a neat rubber grip on the side. The bad part about the carrying case it comes with is the fact you can't see the screen, that is just a slight inconvience that would of been a nice feature but it doesn't bother me.
Scrolling for music is very simple and quick, The menu is basically idiot proof. The screen all though small is all the screen you need on an MP3 player. I can read all the info easily and the backlight fades out nicely.
I don't know what to say but this is a great MP3 player. I have played with almost every small Hard Drive MP3 player, and i have to say this one won my heart, i would't trade it for the world.
I also went out a bought some sony Headphones for 40 bucks, that was another great buy. -
"So very happy with my purchase!!" on by lungfixer
Pros: Price, Features, and Quality
Cons: Will not play WMA with lossless compression, No FM tuner.
Summary: The two reasons this player did not receive a "10" rating from me is because it will not support lossless compression (also, the Carbon will not play full-resolution WAV files either), and you cannot create playlists "on the fly". Other than that, its fabulous. The price (brand new for $159.00 on eBay) more than makes up for the fact that there is no FM tuner. It feels well built and solid, yet its small and light enough to fit in your shirt pocket.
Battery life was excellent, but I did not get a full 20 hours (more like 17)...still WAY better than my roommate gets with his iPod (although his files seem to transfer much faster than mine on the same computer). However, I paid about $100 less than he did for the same capacity (6GB). The earbuds could be higher quality, but this player has VERY little harmonic distortion at high volume...I was impressed.
Overall this was a great buy...I highly recommend this product. -
"Returned iPod Mini same day purchased to get the Carbon" on by alpainter
Pros: Ease of ues, controls, volume, simple display, very user friendly functionality, Napster compatible, memory, price, no batteries!!, size, sound quality, weight
Cons: headphones came with sponge ends, used head phones from my Rio Cali, and I'm good to go.
Summary: I thought I wanted an iPod Mini until I actually used it. What a hassle. I should've know better than to go against my experience with my Rio Cali. The only reason I wanted another MP3 player was because of the memory.
I thought Apple could stear me in the right direction. I was wrong. The Mini went back the same day I bought it, and was replaced with the Carbon Pearl. Should have just done that in the first place.
It has all of the features of the Cali I loved, plus a ton of memory. One of the best parts is NO MORE BATTERIES!
This player leaves iPod in the dust! I can't wait to use it on a bike ride, securely restrained of course.Updated
After three weeks with the Pearl, I'd definitely upgrade my rating to a 10 out of 10. It has been awesome, and works great with the iRiver FM transmitter I got for my car. -
"Very good mini-HD player for i-Pod haters" on by jimboyv
Pros: simple, easy to use. compatible with subscription music. excellent sound quality.
Cons: no dedicated volume control, controls good but not perfect
Summary: I've had my Rio Carbon Pearl for a couple of months now and I am happy to report that I've had no problems with it, whatsoever. I know it sounds a little silly that that is the first thing I am mentioning here but it seems like more and more manufacturers are just selling mp3 players that crap out either from the get-go or after a few uses, Rio not being an exception. I own a Rio Karma and I had HD problems with it and it had to be replaced so I was a little leary when I got my Carbon. But so far so good.
I like the Rio Carbon because the controls are simple and easy to use. This is the main reason why I chose this over the Creative Zen micro. The Click wheel of the ipods are probably a still a little better than the scroll wheel/buttons of the Rio, but ipods are way to limited for me. Which brings me to the other big reason I chose the Carbon - with a firmware upgrade, it is now compatible with subscription music providers such as Napster-To-Go, Rhapsody-To-Go and Yahoo Unlimited, which I subscribe to. For as little as $5 bucks a month you can download most music that you'd ever want onto this nice little player.
The Carbon sounds great, although I didn't like the earbuds that shipped with them. It has good extras like a voice recorder. No Radio tho but that's fine by me because I hate the radio with all the talk and commercials. The Carbon also is very petite and surprisingly thin. Although it's probably a wee bit wider than I would prefer. But it looks very nice and clean and not cheap-looking. The case that comes with it is useful. Battery life for me is not great. I must have gotten a dud coz I only get about 10 hours. But I can live with that.
Overall, I'd say this is amongst the best mini-Hd players out there. Well worth it's price.
