"Excellent little player"
Pros: Size, simplicity, price, useable display, expansion slot
Cons: Cannot get it to recognize larger media cards
Summary: I've been using the Express for 6 months now without a glitch. This is a very straight-forward, easy to use player.
I discarded the stock headphones and use it with Etymotic ER-4s, and the sound is quite good - not quite as clear as my 2g iPod Nano or Creative Zen, but close enough that when traveling on an airplane or train it is impossible to tell the difference. With stock headphones, it is unlikely the difference would be perceptible even in a silent environment.
Loading / deleting content is a breeze, much simpler than the iPod. The controls take a little adjustment, and are not as simple as the iPod, but are simple enough.
If you patiently wait for a sale, the cost becomes too low to ignore - I paid less than $30. This makes it a perfect travel companion. Accidentally leaving on a plane becomes an inconvenience rather than a heartbreaker.
On the negative side, I cannot get it to recognize a 2GB microSD card, even with the latest firmware.
I travel on frequent short trips, and this is the only player I bother taking with me.
