"As always Sony delivers a great portable player but you feel like you purchaced a BMW with no tires"
Pros: Battery life, style, size and weight
Cons: All the accessories especially the software
Summary: I waited a month to get the blue version of the NWE407 and it was worth the wait, I love this player and I mean only the player. I have owned Sony Walkmans for the past 20 years and I have never been disappointed with their products. This was the main reason for my choice after researching other similar products. Thanks for the help CNET.
The battery life is remarkable, the style is unique and the display is beautiful. In day light the display is unreadable but I can live with it. The size and weight make this portable flash player easy to carry in a shirt pocket, in hand or even in your pant pocket with the extension cord supplied. The controls are easy to manage and use even in your pocket. The extension cord doses add weight to the earphone wire resulting in a swinging wire wile walking or exercising.
I basically have no complaints with the player its self but, the rest is not impressive. The supplied clip broke on the first day, the two arms that hold the top of the player just snapped. The clip is not flexible at all and breaks easily. I am just glad that it didn?t beak while I was using it resulting with the fall of the player on the ground.
The ear phones supplied are very basic like every pair of ear phones that come with a Sony player. They hurt the ears and the sound is very plain. I purchased the Sony MDREX71SL and what a difference. These earphones compliment the NWE407 perfectly. The bass and treble are very clear and the noise reduction from the outside world is significant. I use the Montreal subway system to commute and the outside noise is almost nil leaving you in your own little music world.
The Sonic Stage software is awful. It should have been called Turtle Stage since this software is slow; I suspect that the software is communicating with Sony at all times. The library is a mess; songs from an album with various artists are separated by artist. If you want to download a various artist CD to the player you have to create a play list file and transfer each song one by one. A note to fans of mixed continuous CD?S, when the tracks change there is a skip. I really hate this software but with 1GB of memory I will not have to use it too often.
The only improvements I would like to see is a sports version that would be sealed and water proofed. And of course better software and accessories like good tires on a fast sports car.
