"The Best MP3 Player yet" on by ewychen

    Pros: Design, sound, cool!

    Cons: None really

Summary: I managed to get my hands on this Walkman for a day from a pal.

This player has the best sound of any MP3 player I have touched. I have an longstanding opinion that the Walkman sound quality outperforms iPod (especially bass definition) ... the S703 confirmes that opinion and takes it one notch higher. Throw in the noise cancelling and we are talking Hi-Fidelity on the move in relative bliss.

The bass is well defined, tight and solid. Put a good track in and the speed and urgency of bass rhythms are accurately reproduced. Trebles are crisp and accurate too. Overall sound is transparent with a good sound stage that is wide and deep. The built in equalizer fine tunes it all.

The menu system is a bit complicated initially but once one gets the hang of it, it is a no-brainer.

The colour screen is a nice touch and adds a certain coolness to the machine.

My only complaint is that it does not come with a clip and the only way I can carry it (apart from in the pocket) is to hang it around the neck.

Many reviewers in these pages often point to Sonic Stage as an issue, but I tell you what, as a Hi-Fi audiophile, I will buy this machine because of the music enjoyment and even if Sonic Stage is a bit of a pain, the end result is very very worth it.

I own 2 iPods and 2 digital Walkmans, I use iTunes and Sonic Stage and have 1500+ CDs ripped into both formats in AAC and ATRAC3plus at 256kbps. In terms of sound quality, the Sony Walkman is superior to iPod and others. In terms of coolness, with this offering, Sony has caught up.

"poor computer interface - do not buy" on by tjanus

    Pros: great sound

Cons: uses stupid Sony computer program

Summary: I got this and it requires you to use a poorly designed computer program to put music on it. On has to translate it to the Sony-only system. it is long poorly designed and takes a very long time. It is recognized as a zip drive but one can not MP3 files onto it. Stay away. Sony blows it again.

"A great noise cancelling mp3 player" on by toot343

Pros: Small size, sturdy build, excellent earphones

Cons: Sonicstage, slight processor lag when all features turned on

Summary: I got this network walkman because I needed a replacement for my NW-E505 which is getting a bit old. I was satisfied with the NW-E505's performance so decided to get the NW-S703F.

On the plus side, the noise cancelling feature works really well, easily competing against Bose and other noise cancelling headphones. The player has a nice feel to it as it is surrounded by a metal casing. The sound quality is excellent although some white noise can be heard.

On the down side, the Sonicstage software is still a pain to use, but that varies on the opinion of the user. Also is the proprietary usb cable, just make sure not to lose it.
