Quick Take: Toshiba's Gigabeat G20 was one of the earliest true iPod killers to hit the market back in 2003. Unfortunately, the elegantly sleek G20 was available only in Japan. The latest Gigabeat, the F60, has us even more worked up. It's the first player to utilize a 1.8-inch 60GB drive, and it measures an impressively compact 4.2 by 2.5 by 0.7 inches. The F60 also weighs less than the 60GB iPod Photo, at 6 ounces. The slim portrait-shaped case comes in a dashing silver (the 20GB F20 is also available in Aqua Blue and Rose Pink) and features a stupendous 2.2-inch QVGA screen. The patented Plus Touch controller is touch-sensitive and enables smooth scrolling through your collection of MP3, WMA (including protected), and WAV files. While it's not a photo viewer, per se, the F60 allows you to attach JPEGs--as well as album art--to albums and individual songs. The USB 2.0-enabled player includes 28 EQ presets and SRS WOW sound enhancement, and it ships with a dock. The player has a rated battery life of 11 hours--kind of low, if you ask us. The Japan-only F60 will be available in mid-November for a wallet-killing $575.

Summary: The Toshiba gigabeat MEG-F60S has more bells and whistles than an ice cream truck. And although there is lots of storage here, the player has serious sonic flaws on everything but flat EQ.
