"Not what i expected AT all."

    by lwales42 on December 22, 2008

Pros: Winds up, for the eco friendly of us this is a great feature, no problem with this whatso ever, seems to work perfectly well.

    Cons: everything else.

Summary: where to start? bad menus, i cant work out how to use them and im only 17! the wind up eco friendly gadget really attracted me cause i use my mp3 player alot. but im utterly disappointed with this one. i want to love it, i try to love it, but it just sits on my desk longing to be used collecting nothing but a coat of dust. if only it worked.

first theres the ugly isue. compared to my samsung yp-k5 with the folding speaker(beautiful by the way, ive had two of these and i absolutly recomend it to anybody, the first one was broken when something got shoved inside the usb port by my younger brother. so no supprise there that it wouldnt be chargable. the console its still worked it was only a matter of time till its battery ran out so i brought a new one, its lasted me nearly 2 years already and theres not a scratch on it.) the trevor baylis mp3, its HUGE. that i thought, okay i can live with, but the buttons are god awful. promoted as "retro" it really means they are so huge and plastic they will annoy not only you but every body else on the bus. they click so loudly it makes me almost embarrased to use it, i can relate it to that sound people have on their keypads on phones, the little beeping sound, after afew uses it really really annoys you.

    secondly there the menus.
WHO thought they were a good deisgn?!?!!
First time i uploaded my music they were in folders dragged from my computer across to the mp3. the instructions reccomend you do this by the way. worked fine, till i turned it on and played them. they were all in one great big menu which i couldnt stand, (not even in alphabetical order, more like any order it felt like at the time) it only ever played what it wanted to play on the random setting, the same songs over and over. but as there are no sub menus you cant select the artist you feel like listening to that day, you have to search through it till you find a track by that artist. and when you click to change the track it fades away and there is an annoying few seconds of nothingness untill your next track fades into the foreground.
so i took the tracks off.
created new folders on computer, put the track back on and they came up in sub menus; great i thought, i can work with this.
    NO.
    clearly i cant.
you go to one menu. play it.
cant get out of it to find another artist in another menu.
the only way i can find the list of all my artists is by hitting various buttons 10+ times till it does something. this i cant stand. my samsung yp-k5 has a smooth instant touch screen beauty to the way it changes between tracks and menus. so how can i possibly go from a product that responds so well to something practially stone age by comparison; even if it is eco friendly. i just cant do it.
now comes the issue of all the other features,
bad colour screens that alomst look pixelated.
responce time is slack to say the least.
    buttons do not respond anywhere.
i have yet to find a situation where i need the torch or dictaphone.
wouldnt bother using the phone charger unless your a body builder. the phone charger attracted me to the mp3 immediatly when i saw it, but you can only get about a minute of talk time out of 10 minutes winding. so if you ever do find yourself on a monutain side with a broken limb and you need to phone someone when you have no battery; good luck phoning for help.

    overall. its crap.
    dont waste your money,.
i want to flog mine on ebay.
    but.
downside for me it was a present from my mum.
not sure i can bring myself to do that, even if i do give her the £99 she paid for it.
now ive found out there are addaptors i can buy and plug into my current mp3 and then charge from that, as well as solar pannel addaptors.
    much more like it.
Trevor Baylis needs to go back to the drawing board with this one.
    or better yet.
    scrap it altogether.

oh, and have you seen the price tag??????
