Pros Great screen; good fidelity; easy to use.
Cons Lack of support for Microsoft file types and inability to use legally acquired downloaded content.
Summary I am generally like Microsoft products--so I looked forward to my new Zune, a Christmas present. It was my first MP3 player and I had hoped to use it not only for music but also for Audio books downloaded from NetLibrary.com as well as to hold computer files while on the road.
Unfortunately, Zune does not support acquisition of any media licenses not from the Zune online store. It does not support Microsoft's own Media Player. It is not a Microsoft PlaysForSure Windows Media compatible device. It does not hold computer files. Very sad for an otherwise nice product from Microsoft. As far as I can tell from searching the web, Microsoft does not intend to make it so.
I have returned my Zune for a Creative Zen Vision:W--only slightly more expensive (at discount 274 vs 249 for Zune, as of the writing of this review), bigger screen, some added features--and it plays well with others.
Too bad, Zune could have been a nice product if Microsoft had made it compatible with the world.
Pros Both of my kids can use wi-fi. Very easy to transfer videos from Windows Movie Maker.
Cons Limited colors and slightly larger than IPod
Summary One of my sons wanted an IPod for the holiday the other wanted a Zune. Personally I decided to get a Zune for myself. In the end after opening the gifts both sons wanted the Zunes so I got the IPod. They seem to like them, which is what counts. The screen is a plus, it is large enough to see videos clearly.
Pros Interface, display, industrial design
Cons Overall size, software bugs, battery life, file conversion time
Summary I've owned a Zune since the first day it came out. I think everyone has captured the good things about it which I mostly agree with. I just wanted to highlight a couple of problems that I have experienced for those of you wondering how the Zunes have held up:
1)Playlist using Zune software is buggy - sometimes when I create playlists, I cannot click and drag songs from my Zune onto the playlist. Sometimes I can. Sometimes the playlist which I have saved does not shows up on the software interface on the PC, but doesn't show up on the Zune. Vice versa as well.
2) Battery life goes down very fast - I thought it may have been my particular Zune, so I replaced it with a new one today. It went down to the point where I had to re-charge it after a couple of hours of continuous play. I am hoping that the battery life doesn't degrade as fast on this one! Perhaps this was the wireless feature being "on".
3) Wireless thing is kind of pointless - personally, I think the main reason I would want wireless on my Zune is to sync it to my PC without having to use that USB cable. I don't really care about getting songs from other people, especially when the songs "expire" after a few plays. I am hoping that Microsoft will upgrade the firmware or something to make it wirelessly sync-able in the future.
4) The screen gets scratched up very easily - but so do almost all the MP3 player screens. Just a warning...get one of those screen protectors.
5) It takes FOREVER to put video files onto the Zune - 100MB file will take too long to sit through. I haven't timed it yet, but for a video of decent size, you better have something else to do. I have resorted to uploading it overnight.
I don't mean to bad mouth the Zune. Actually, I really love the device. I'm just venting a few of my frustrations with it. Overall, I wouldn't purchase another MP3 player on the market. I feel it beats the Ipod in all categories. I just wish it were even better than it currently is.
Pros Easy to use, looks great, great sound!
Cons Little bit big, not enough accessories yet.
Summary I used to have everything ipod. I liked my ipod video. However, I also like microsoft, so because I addicted to electronics bought the zune. Man it is so much better! The click wheel works, I dont need to fumble with it, the screen is nice and large and easy to read (except in bright sun light as with all devices like this), it looks cool! Changed for now!
Pros Case feels sturdy, screen size, All my hard work creating movies for ipod transfered over without me manually selecting them. stock headphones are comfy, sound N picture quality great!
Cons Marketplace needs podcasts section added, oh and videos when are those available? transfer movies from xbox360??
Summary Formats are good enough for me, AVI mp4 mp3 acc, etc... Quality of build is great, sound and video great, could always use a bigger drive but 30 is good already have 20 of my dvds on it. Only problems are marketplace wasnt ready yet. cant wait to see the updates. Video section needs market place and podcast section. also movies purchased on xbox360 should transfer over to the zune. and zune to 360. until then, you wont see me buy any movies on live. anyone considering buying a zune protect the screen www.sheildzone.com best!!! bad news for case companies. I put one of these on and never use a case the size of the zune right in my hands is all i need. no bulky case.
when transfering files from itunes (all the dvds rips I made) it converts and transfers that converted file to the zune..NOT duplicating files on hard drive as Itunes generally does. also when i tell the software to check a folder for content it does it everytime! unike itunes, you have to manually tell it to each time you add new content.
all those rumors of zune software crashing, I had no problems at all... on 3 computers.
you guys spreading that rumor need to upgrade your crappy PC's.
cant think of anything else. Fun Player love the way it organizes media on my laptop. oh and software isnt a ram hog as itunes is. GART.exe i think it was?? a program that runs causing system hang? running itunes takes up 40MB ram without content in the library!!! whats up with that?
