"Good overall performance" on by benjaserrano

Pros: compact, economical, good engineering, networking ready

Cons: only 10 page ADF, ink consumtion?, no linux capable

Summary: Its a real engineering jewel. Its amazing how this compact device is capable of doing so many things, and most of them in an outstanding manner. I have calculated that its volume is approx 1/2 of compiting models (HP, Canon, Lexmark). I have not compared with Epson because Epson's do not have ADF. It includes full networking capability, good software (Paperport is one of the best I have tested) and you can operate it many different ways (from your computer, from the Brother). Scan is good enough for paper documents, fax and even photo. Network installation went lightning fast and troubleless. Fax is incredible: you can fax from your pc, recieve to your pc, (even if your pc is off, you retrieve faxes when you switch on your computer. I have not tested card readers (but who cares if you have Picasa). Photo prints are very good if you use Brother paper. You don't need any extra photographic ink cartidges like HP, Lexmark. No even an extra black pigmented ink like Canon. From my view it is an extremely intelligent device.

Final words: I dont know if i would change my mind in the future (i have only tested it for a week) but its performance is so good in the long term HP and Canon should fear Brother(which as far as I know was a former sewing machine manufacturer). I will post the ink performance in the long run but I have realized that Brother ink cartridges are one of the most economical.

"Excellent - Very clean text compare to my HP printer" on by mstaiano1

Pros: Lots of Features for the price. Very easy to install. Nicely packaged

Cons: Whould like more information on Scanning from the Users Guide

Summary: Bought printer with some doubt on print quality after reading CNET's review. I must say comparing the text quality to my older HP, the Brother MFC-440cn was selected by other members in my family after a side by side comparison. Photo quality is good, not excellent though, but the added features and price makes this a nice addition in our home environment. Was able to use the fax (resumes) without any problem. I like the addition of the Softscan Paperport software supplied, it helps with organizing photos.
Cons: Not enough information given in the Users Guide about how to scan. You need to use the CD which gets you to the On-Line site.

"If same ink mechanism as MFC-620 - DONT BUY IT" on by hellerup

Pros: Low price - low quality

Cons: Drinks ink - like a cat drinks milk

Summary: If this printer use the same ink mechanism as the MFC-620, then it will drink the ink like a cat drinks milk all day long. DONT BUY IT.

According to brother it will clean the mechanism on regular basis during the day to keep it fit for quality printing. What it does is it use ink from all 4 cardridges when cleaning the mechanism. Thus drink the ink. Also everytime you trun it on or exersice the printer. Only way to prevent this is to keep it turned off, but if used as a fax ....

If one of the SMALL color cardridges is empty, you can no use the printer. You can not even print B/W using the B/W cardridge.

I red a review explaining the same issue before I baught it, but choosed to ignore it - bad and expensive descision.

"Great scanner and fax but..." on by cbeard1515

Pros: Easy faxing, quicker scanning and copying than my last printer

    Cons: Abysmal color printing

Summary: I gave this AIO a try despite disparaging reviews. I didn't think it could be worse than the Dell AIO 960 printer/scanner/fax I was replacing (which was not terrible, it's just lost some functionality after 3 years). It is fine for a small office environment if you don't ever make color copies or print photos. I printed color photos off my computer and directly off an SD card--the former was washed out and the latter was even worse. Placing a color document in the scanner to print manually produced the only acceptable color print. I am returning the Brother and have already ordered the higher rated Canon Pixma recommended by CNET.

"Excellent - overral all in one" on by ctconsultant

Pros: small form factor; Installation was a breeze; Network setup and router was easy; Excellent product

Cons: None I can think off

Summary: Please remember the audience of this printer is a home user or 1- 5 people home office. I am really impressed by this all in one. I was hesitant to buy based on reviews but finally I believe I have made an excellent decision. The old DELL all in one 962 is in the garbage now! I have connected this printer via network to my router and can wirelessly connect using my laptop. Breeze to setup. Highly recommedned
