"Works exactly as advertised! That's saying something..."

5 stars  | on by Spuddoc

Pros

Remarkably easy wireless set up, quiet operation, low energy standby, scans/fax/copy/print quality is excellent. Feeder makes all the difference

Cons

Wish the phone jacks were in back and the paper tray a bit more sturdy

I have had a crappy fax copier for years. It never fed paper right, its B&W copy and fax were low quality. I needed an upgrade. I was looking for a simple flatbed scanner when my 11 yo asked about this one on the shelf at his eye level in Best Buy. I hadn't researched it so wasn't sure. A woman standing there asked me if I was looking at the device, and we chatted: she had one and loved it. I figured I could always bring it back. Well... This thing rocks. After 2 weeks I am still smiling when I see it: A machine that works EXACTLY LIKE THEY SAID IT WOULD!!!! I set it up wirelessly on my n/g network (its a g device) using the install disk. It took only a couple of minutes, and the device came up on the network just like that. I was immediately able to scan and fax from my laptop (a Vista machine). I installed it on my XP machine, and because its DHCP server has always been wacked I had to enter the IP address directly (a quick Google search told me how). In the past getting any network printer to be recognized by this machine was an ordeal; not this time. IThe IP address was on the test page the MFC printed when I printed a test page on the Vista machine. I was quickly able to determine where to put the address and voila, it works flawlessly! Here's the surprise. I installed it on my oldest son's 64 bit Vista machine and darn'd if the disk didn't have 64-bit drivers and software!!! Now all my home networked computers can access this machine flawlessly.

The color copy and printing are very good if not excellent. Certainly within my expectations and family needs. The machine sits dark and silent when not in use: it looks like its off. If a computer accesses it or I hit a button on the display, it immediately comes to life without warming up. I did a multipage scan to a PDF using the Paperport software that comes with it, and it worked flawlessly with an excellent quality image of the detailed technical drawings I scanned. The fax plays nice with my home answering machine picking up fax signals through the welcome message and somehow the answering machine doesn't record (or fill the house with) the fax signal. Love that. I keep saying this, but it was really nice to have a machine that did what it said it would, and set up so painlessly. I think that alone was price of admission. I got mine for a little over $100 at Best Buy.

"Awesome Printer"

Pros

- Great Printer Quality
- Low cost
- Cartridges don't have chips in them and are cheaper than competing printers in price range

Cons

- A little slower than some other printers, but not so slow that it's a problem
- Paper feeder holds about 50 pages, would have been nice if it could hold more, but not a big deal

I purchased an epson nx515 not too long ago (which is now in a garbage bag) once I realized the extremely high cost to purchase ink. Ink on this printer is far more reasonable and it is also possible to purchase compatible 3rd party ink as the cartridges don't use chips. On my e-pos printer if a color cartridge was emptied the machine would stop and you couldn't even use the scanner or print in just black, and since the cartridges have sophisticated patented chips you could not purchase 3rd party ink.

I really like the borderless print feature. On high quality paper prints look amazing for a printer in this price range. The scanner works well. It has a fax feature which I have not used. It looks well built.

Really impressed with this printer.
